Sun or Ascendant in Cancer with Ray 1   .	Sun Cancer (or Ascendant Cancer), R1P (or R1S) Plus Constellationally Transmitted R3 and R7 No significant mutual reinforcement of ray and astrological energies emerges through this combination. Except that the seventh ray is a reflection of the first, the first ray is very weak in Cancer. Perhaps, those born in the second and third decanates {under Scorpio and Pisces respectively—according to the Hindu system popularized by Alan Leo}, would have somewhat more of the first ray. The decanate rulers given in this book are those proposed by the Tibetan Teacher. Another legitimate method is to subdivide any sign according to the signs in its triplicity, and then call the ruler of the sub-sign the decanate ruler. For instance, in Cancer, the first decanate would be ruled by Cancer and the Moon; the second by Scorpio and Mars; and the third by Pisces and, therefore, either Jupiter or Neptune. Only careful psychological research will reveal which rulerships should be used, or whether a combination of different systems would be useful.

The insular self-protectiveness of the self-centered Cancer person combines with the isolativeness induced within the insufficiently spiritualized personality by the first ray. (These undesirable qualities would be in the nature of a relapse or reversion to a formerly bound condition, as it is not possible to have a first or second ray personality unless one is at least an aspirant. The first or second ray may, however, enter the personality by other lines of influence.) ii. A somewhat contradictory indication as the first ray does not appear in Cancer either through constellational transmission nor through any ruling or associated planets. iii. Seeking to incorporate and dominate the whole. (Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar are both reputed to have been born with the Sun tropically in Cancer). iv. Defensive-'fortress' consciousness. Unreachable. Untouchable. v. Willfully isolative and insular. vi. Grasping and tenaciously holding to power. vii. Holding fast and denying freedom. viii. Insisting that the lunar lords dominate. Defending all that is reactionary, of the past and should have been outlived. ix. Defending form over soul and spirit. The mummification of form and the expulsion of soul/spirit. x. A. Not Many Similarities: There are not many similarities between these two energies. B. Power to Grip and Hold: Both energy/forces are endowed with the power to hold. On the level of physical symbolism the grip of the hand is often powerful in both cases. Cancer indicates the large and strong claws of the crab. One of the symbols for the first ray is the clenched fist. C. Tenacity and Persistence: Both influences are possessed of tenacity and persistence. D. Wide Control: Individuals influenced by both energies may seek wide control. Cancer seeks to bring all "under one roof" or within one extensive ring-pass-not. The first ray, unchecked, seeks to control and dominate within as broad a range of influence as possible. Thus Cancer seeks to incorporate widely and the first ray seeks to impress its influence as widely as possible. E. Isolation: Both energies generate the condition of isolation. Cancer becomes insular due to fear and other retrogressive tendencies associated with the third aspect of divinity. The first ray generates isolation because it seeks to forge ahead, thus separating itself from traditional, backward leaning tendencies. F. Protectiveness: Both energies can be strongly protective in nature. Cancer shelters and buffers that which it would protect (defensively rather than offensively) from intrusive influences. The first ray utilizes the protective wall of law or force, actively fending off intrusion. The "guardian wall" which the Masters place around those they would protect seems to derive from both Cancer and the first ray, and is motivated by second ray considerations .
