Secondarily, (assuredly, but not exclusively) Virgo transmits
R4, R4, R6, R1, and R2 through Mercury, the Moon, the veiled
Neptune, the veiled Vulcan, and, also, Jupiter—all these are
its planetary rulers on three levels—exoteric, esoteric and
hierarchical.

or Sacrificial Fires.
|
11. Associated
with the stages immediately preceding the ‘birthing’, form-regulating
first initiation (EA 67,
471); then, with the cleansing, purifying second
initiations, and possibly with the decisive, Monad-establishing
sixth (introduction to true monadic living)
|
|
11.
Associated with the instinct-directing, ‘soul-ward’ orienting,
‘form-abstractive’ first initiation; with the fierily-baptizing,
ideal-containing, de-glamorizing, clear-eyed second initiation,
and with the direction-choosing, outward-bound, adventuring,
nirvanic sixth initiation—the initiation of Decision.
|
12.
Virgo can be reasonably understood as influencing, particularly,
the cherishing, patient, maternally-loving heart center
(through the second ray), and the persistently devoted solar
plexus center (through the sixth). In addition to its influence
upon a number of smaller, sub-diaphragmatic centers associated
with the solar plexus, Virgo must have an influence upon the
ajna center—as an organ of discrimination and discernment.
The mysteries of generation are ruled by the Moon, which rules
Virgo esoterically; a sacral center association is, thereby,
reasonable. The six of the sacral center leads
to the twelve of the heart.
|
|
12. Sagittarius can be reasonably associated with
the insistently driving, aspiring, fiery solar plexus
center; with the instinctively-hunting, passion-driven sacral
center, and even with the center at the base of the spine,
where the latent fire (Mars) awaits its rising; Earth (with
its first ray Monad and a symbol identical to the fourfold structure
of the base center) is the esoteric ruler of Sagittarius, connecting
it to that lowest center. The personality-directing, clear-seeing,
force controlling ajna center should also be influenced
strongly by Sagittarius, at a relatively high point in the evolutionary
process. |
13.
The zodiacal signs influence the Monad of every human being
(EA 411, 637, TCF 1191); the influence from Virgo is powerful
in monadic life because the second manifested Creative Hierarchy
(Who are the “prototypes of the Monads”—TCF
1197) are ruled by Virgo and its hierarchical ruler,
Jupiter. One motivation of the descending Monad is the perfection
of matter (in this case, the substance of the first solar
system). With this mission, Virgo is intimately concerned.
|
|
13. The zodiacal signs influence the Monad of every
human being (EA 411, 637, TCF 1191); the influence from
Sagittarius guides the Monad on its descent into material immersion,
and, again, through an inherently flawless sense of direction,
guides the Monad upon its path of return. Sagittarius contributes
to the conviction of “monadic destiny”, and destination.
|
14.
Within the Triad—Virgo ( esoterically ruled in part by Neptune,
and hierarchically by second ray Jupiter, and transmitting,
itself, the second ray), is related primarily to buddhi
(the second aspect of the Triad), bestowing as it
does the second ray and a higher correspondence to “mother
love”—a divine, maternal compassion. Virgo is also associated
with the third ray, and the third divine aspect, and hence,
even if indirectly, with higher manas, the third
triadal aspect.
|
|
14. Within the Triad—Sagittarius is focused in both
buddhi and higher manas—the abstract mind. Sagittarius
transmits the fourth ray, which relates to the fourth, or buddhic,
plane and the principle of buddhi. Sagittarius
is one of the intuitive signs. (EA 177) In Sagittarius,
intuition (fourth ray, second principle) governs aspiration
(sixth ray—which Sagittarius also transmits) (cf. EA 178) Sagittarius
is at once philosophical (utilizing the abstract mind) and intuitive.
The blend of buddhi and higher manas may be called
“universal or spiritual mind” which Sagittarius expresses in
relation to Mercury. (EA 369) |
15.
In relation to the Solar Angel, and the soul-consciousess
(and causal body) through which it expresses—Virgo, like Cancer,
can be seen in the ‘mother’ role—with Virgo providing a nurturing
and discriminatively cleansing energy, utilized by the
Solar Angel to improve the quality of its personality
manifestation. Virgo, as the Solar Angel expresses it, is the
will to manifest love intelligently through matter, until the
Christ energy pours successfully through the personality-form
and a relative perfection is reached.
|
|
15. In relation to the Solar Angel, and the soul-consciousness
(and causal body) through which it expresses—Sagittarius can
be seen as the will of the Solar Angel to inspire its personality
to a state of aspiration through the presentation of an elevating
vision of future spiritual possibilities. As well, when the
personality errs (as oft it does), Sagittarius represents the
‘guiding beam of light’ which offers a secure sense of spiritual
direction—directing, at length, to the mountain of initiation.
|
16.
Within the Personality—Virgo can be identified with the discriminative,
analytical, and selective processes of the lower
mental nature; with the cleansing and purification
of the astral nature; with the magnetic purity of the
etheric nature; with the general health and nutrition
and of the dense physical vehicle. Virgo, via the Moon, is particularly
related to the dense physical vehicle and to all personality
substance as a whole. (EA 194) (The
vehicular focus and its degree of prominence, depends upon the
stage of evolutionary development.
|
|
16. Within the Personality—Sagittarius can be identified
with the directing, thought-projecting power of
the lower mental nature and its eventual responsiveness to
intuitive guidance; with the passional and eventual
aspirational processes of the astral nature; with the
vibrancy and buoyancy of the etheric nature; and
with the general tendency to energetic activity
of the dense physical nature. Sagittarius is particularly associated
with the integrated, one-pointed, disciplic personality.(The vehicular focus and its degree of prominence, depends
upon the stage of evolutionary development.) |
17.
Stage of Meditative Consciousness: Meditation proper. “Virgo—Meditation—Soul life, as sensed in man, the gestation period.
The stage of the hidden Christ. Intelligent man. Personality,
as hiding the Christ life.” (EA 228)
|
|
17. Stage of Meditative Consciousness: Inspiration.
“Sagittarius—Inspiration—Preparation for initiation. Soul
inspires personality life. Soul expresses itself through personality.
The Initiate.” (EA 229) |

1.
Expressive of both the second and third aspects
of divinity, but especially well-rooted in the third. “Virgo is the focal point for the expression of the third aspect, that of
active intelligence. In that sign the highest function of matter
is symbolised.” (EA 194, also 280)
|
|
1.
Expressive principally of the third aspect of divinity
because it is the third fire sign. “From
Aries comes cosmic fire; from Sagittarius comes planetary fire;
and from Leo comes solar fire; and each of these fires ‘clears
the way by burning’ for the expression of the three divine aspects:
spirit (Aries), soul (Leo) and body (Sagittarius).” (EA 293) Expressive
of the second or consciousness aspect, through its majority
of soft-line constellation and planetary rays.
|
2.
Cosmically associated principally with the Pleiades. “One of the most esoteric cycles is based upon certain conjunctions and respective
positions of Virgo and the Pleiades.” (EA 657) “Virgo is inseparable
from Leo and the Pleiades and the Hyades.”
(EA 679) Virgo is related to several feminine constellations
which figure importantly in the astrology of the form. “There
is Cassiopea, Venus, Coma Berenice, Andromeda and one or two others,
as well as Virgo, the Virgin, the most important of them all.”
(EA 400)
|
|
2.
Definite cosmic association with the Pleiades and probably with
the Little Bear (particularly Polaris—the Pole Star). “Pleiades—Gemini/Sagittarius—Mercury” (EA 50) “Gemini—Sagittarius—Mercury
(which are an expression of the Pleiades) enable the Probationary
Disciple to pass on to the Path of Accepted Discipleship.” “…The
Pointers; these point to the Pole star which is at this time a
major ‘star of direction’.” (EA 195) It should be noted that Sagittarius
is a major sign of direction. If Leo and Aries rule
the two Pointers, then the third fire sign, Sagittarius, should
be connected with Polaris. Also, Sirius, Gemini and Sagittarius
probably formed a triangle at the time of man’s individualization.
(cf. EA 355) Sagittarius and Betelgeuse are related to the third
cosmic path: “Source— Betelgeuse, via the sign Sagittarius.” (EA
1257)

1.
Virgo transmits the second ray constellationally. Virgo
is also the eleventh sign of the zodiac, counting by polarities
(Aries-Libra, Taurus-Scorpio, Gemini-etc.), which reinforces its
resonance with the second ray.
|
In Comparison With
|
1.
Jupiter, the exoteric ruler of Sagittarius, transmits the second
ray, most probably through its soul. Earth, the esoteric ruler
of Sagittarius, transmits the second ray through its second
ray soul (EA 619).
|
2.
Virgo transmits the sixth ray constellationally.
|
|
2.
Sagittarius transmits the sixth ray constellationally—with
especial strength. Numbering the signs by polarities (Aries-Libra,
Taurus-Scorpio, etc.), Sagittarius is the sixth in order, giving
it numerical affinity with the sixth ray. Jupiter, the
exoteric ruler, has possible sixth ray associations through
enthusiasm and the “worship” aspect of ritual Mars, the hierarchical
ruler, transmits the sixth ray.
|
3.
Virgo (the second oldest of the constellations) is associated
with the third ray—the ray of the previous solar system.
“…it might be said that Cancer
is an expression (in the stage of great advancement) of the first
half of the life cycle in solar system one, whilst Virgo is an
equally advanced expression of the second half” (EA 256).
|
|
3.
Sagittarius is the ninth sign of the zodiac on the reversed
wheel. Nine is the number of the number three. The third ray has a 900 year cycle.
(EPI 348-349). The Earth,
esoteric ruler of Sagittarius, transmits the third ray
as its personality ray. Mars serves as the astral body to a third
ray Entity.
|
4.
Virgo is the sixth sign of the zodiac on the reversed wheel
and, hence, has numerical affinity with the number six
and with the sixth ray.
|
|
4.
See #2 above.
|
5.
Virgo is the seventh sign of the zodiac on the clockwise
wheel, IF one begins numbering from Pisces (which the Tibetan
does in relation to the sign, Leo). This seventh position
reinforces Virgo’s relationship to the seventh ray.
|
|
5.
Jupiter, the exoteric ruler, transmits the seventh ray
through “ritualistic worship” (EA 648, 660)
|
6.
Virgo is the eighth sign of the zodiac on the clockwise
wheel and hence is related to the Christ—Whose number is “eight”
(EA 37)—and to Mercury—the “Messenger at the
eighth gate.”
|
|
6.
Sagittarius has a close relation to the winged god, Mercury, even
though Mercury is in detriment in this sign.. “He
"flies from point to point, searching for the arrows which
he has discharged." He has, figuratively speaking, to dismount
constantly from his white horse (the developed and purified personality)
and find where the arrows of intuitional aspiration will take
him; he travels upon the "wings of the soul" (note the
relationship to the winged feet of Mercury, the messenger of the
Gods) and becomes, in his own personality, himself the winged
God:..” (EA 181)
|
7.
Mercury is the exoteric ruler of Virgo (and also exalted) and
transmits the fourth ray.
|
|
7.
Sagittarius transmits the fourth ray constellationally.
Further, Sagittarius is the fourth sign of the zodiac
upon the clockwise wheel, numbering from Pisces. (cf. also EA 357) Earth has a close relationship
to the fourth ray through its planetary order (fourth from
the Sun if Vulcan is counted) and its symbol. (the fourfold, even-armed
cross within a circle). Mars, the “God of War” must be related
to the lower aspect of the fourth ray—that which
produces the conflict which precedes harmony.
|
8.
Mercury has a close relation to the third ray. (EA 280)
|
|
8.
See #3 above.
|
9.
Mercury has a close relation to the fifth ray, through
its relation to the fifth scheme, the fifth round,
the fifth race and sub-race. “The fifth race is born under Mercury.” (EA 663)
|
|
9.
Sagittarius transmits the fifth ray constellationally.
Further, Sagittarius is the fifth sign on the clock-wise
wheel and hence, has numerical affinity with the fifth
ray. Mars, the hierarchical ruler, has strong fifth ray
relations, through its orange color and its connection to science
and the five senses.
|
10.
The Moon is the esoteric ruler of Virgo, and transmits the fourth
ray.
|
|
10.
See #7 above.
|
11.
The Moon is anciently related to the third ray, being associated
with dense physical “matter” and with the Moon Chain and the first
solar system in which the third ray was dominant.
|
|
11.
See#3 above.
|
12.
The Moon is also associated with the seventh ray, through
its rulership of the seventh manifested Creative Hierarchy
and its rulership of the dense part of the seventh plane.
|
|
12.
See #5 above.
|
13.
Vulcan is a veiled esoteric ruler in Virgo and transmits
the first ray.
|
|
13.
Earth, the esoteric ruler of Sagittarius, transmits the first
ray monadically. (EA 619) Mars (and its School) are expressive of the first
ray. (TCF 1179)
|
14.
.Vulcan, a veiled esoteric ruler in Virgo, has a close relation
to the number four—to the fourth kingdom (the Human
Kingdom), the fourth kingdom from the human (the
Mineral Kingdom) and to the fourth initiation.
|
|
14.
See #7 above.
|
15.
Vulcan has an association with the second ray, as Vulcan
is connected to the “heart of the sun.” (EA 393)
|
|
15.
See #1 above.
|
16.
Vulcan has associations with the fifth ray through concretion
and the seventh ray, through the mineral kingdom and the
principle of rhythm.
|
|
16.
See #9 above.
|
17.
Neptune is a veiled esoteric ruler of Virgo and transmits
the sixth ray.
|
|
17.
See#2 above.
|
18.
Neptune also transmits the second ray monadically. (EPI
421)
|
|
18.
See#1 above.
|
19.
Neptune is associated with the fourth ray through its rulership
of the fourth or buddhic plane, and with the third
ray through its associations with the “waters” which are “matter.”
(EA 666, 275)
|
|
19.
See#7 above.
|
20.
Jupiter is the hierarchical ruler of Virgo and transmits the second
ray.
|
|
20.
See #1 above.
|
21.
Jupiter also transmits the seventh ray through its association
with “ritualistic worship.” (EA 660)
|
|
21.
See #5 above.
|
22.
Jupiter has a possible connection with the sixth ray through
its exoteric rulership of Sagittarius and its enthusiastic nature.
|
|
22.
See #2 above.
|
23.
It is hard to conceive that Virgo, as a constellation, has no
relation to the seventh ray because of the traits demonstrated
by so many Virgoan individuals. In any case, Virgo is the ruler
of the seventh Creative Hierarchy (if the unmanifested
Hierarchies are included in the numbering).
|

|
43.
Virgo upon the Mutable Cross: “Virgo—In
Virgo, the man who was fluid in Pisces and emotionally selfish
and full of desire in Sagittarius, begins to focus still more
intently and to reason and think. The latent soul is becoming
interiorly active; a germination process is proceeding; the hidden
man is making his presence felt. The intellect is awakening and
instinct—after passing through the emotional stage—is being transmuted
into intellect.” (EA 118-119)
|
|
43. Sagittarius upon the Mutable Cross: “Sagittarius—Here
the ordinary man begins to demonstrate a tendency to become more
focussed and the fluidity and negativity of Pisces become concentrated
upon the attainment of that which is desired. The man demonstrates
one-pointed selfish instincts and though he may be, for instance,
friendly and kind, it is through a desire for popularity. This
is a good expression of the individual Sagittarian subject and
shows also the tendency of the soul to turn all evil eventually
into good. The lessons of life are being learned and experiment
is going on.” (EA 118) |
44.
Virgo upon the Fixed Cross: “Virgo—The
mind, under the influence of Virgo, which has been analytical
and critical, changes to that quality of mind which is best described
by the words, illumination and revelation. The Christ to whom
the Virgin must eventually give birth is recognised as present
in the womb, though not yet born. Life is recognised. The process
of the revelation of the Christ consciousness is [Page 121] carried
intelligently forward and the selfish aspirations and experiments
of the undeveloped man give place to the selflessness of the illumined
and intuitive disciple.” (EA 120-121)
|
|
44. Sagittarius upon the Fixed Cross: “Sagittarius—This
is now the sign of the one-pointed disciple. The life of fluid
response to matter becomes that of the focussed response to spirit
and preparation for initiation in Capricorn. The arrow of the
mind is projected unerringly towards the goal.” (EA 121)

The Life of the Christ from a Virgoan Perspective: “The Virgo aspect came into expression in His twelfth year when He said: ‘Wist
ye not that I must be about My Father’s business,’ thereby indicating
the subordination of the form life to the will of the indwelling
Christ; this was consummated when ‘divinity descended upon Him’
at the Baptism. (EA 564)

of the imminent sacrifice which He would have to make: ‘I must
go up to Jerusalem,’ and, we read, He then ‘set His face’ and
trod the Path of the Saviour, leading to the liberation of humanity.”

Similarities
and Points of Cooperation Between the Influences |
Similarities
and Points of Cooperation
Between the Zodiacal Influences
A.
We see that both are mutable signs and both are ruled by a powerful
sixth Ray which ties them into the Christian or common cross. Although
Virgo in its lower phases can be quite skeptical, analytical and
full of doubt, it develops into a sign of great faith as is Sagittarius.
So both are powerfully Christian signs, Virgo bringing through preeminently
the second Ray and Sagittarius preeminently the sixth. And hence
together they relate to the aspirational elevation of matter into
the state where it can be controlled by the soul. Since both are
signs of idealism, they each serve a higher source of energy. Virgo
serves dutifully and Sagittarius serves ardently the vision or ideal
which it sees.
B.
Both signs have a strong connection to the physical nature. In the
Christian context they can be equally hard upon the physical nature,
subjecting it to great disciplines. Often with Virgo, disciplines
of diet and with Sagittarius, disciplines of exercise and austerities.
Going back to differences, we see Virgo seeking divinity in the
immediate surroundings and in small things. Sagittarius following
the quest mentality seeks divinity in the distance.
C.
Both have a profound body focus, Virgo because it is an earth
sign and is esoterically ruled by the Moon which relates to the
physical body, that Moon veiling Vulcan which is on one level
a very physically oriented planet, ruling physical rhythms and
Sagittarius because in relation to the trinity Aries-Leo-Sagittarius,
Sagittarius rules the body with Leo the soul and Aries the Monad.
Also the esoteric rulership of Sagittarius by the earth relates
it to both the etheric body and to the body corporeal which that
etheric body animates. In relation to the disciplines which followers
of Christianity subject themselves to, such disciplines are often
of a bodily nature and are inspired by these two signs. Further,
the Lunar Lords which is the Sagittarian Hierarchy are related
also the Virgo through the esoteric rulership of Virgo by the
Moon and indeed Virgo rules the perfecting of these Lunar Lords.
D.
In another manner, both Virgo and Sagittarius are related to the
animal nature. In conventional astrology, Virgo rules small animals
which are of course the servants of humanity, a theme associated
with Virgo. And Sagittarius indicates via its symbol, the centaur,
that the animal nature of man comes under its province. So animal
lovers of all kinds are found in relation to Virgo and Sagittarius
and also Pisces must be included. And indeed Virgo rules the
perfecting of these Lunar Lords.
E. In
another manner, both Virgo and Sagittarius are related to the animal
nature. In conventional astrology, Virgo rules small animals which
are of course the servants of humanity, a theme associated with
Virgo. And Sagittarius indicates via its symbol, the centaur, that
the animal nature of man comes under its province. So animal lovers
of all kinds are found in relation to Virgo and Sagittarius and
also Pisces must be included demonstrating that those signs which
convey the sixth Ray as all of these do, are very much associated
with the animal kingdom. In the early Christian disciplines, it
is the animal nature of man which must be brought under control
and these two signs either through discipline or aspiration assist
in this control.
F. Both
signs as well can find themselves engaged in processes of idealistic
purification and hence willing to sacrifice human values for these
purificatory processes. The statement by the Tibetan in connection
with the sixth Ray seems appropriate here. Love more your fellow
men.
G.
There is a peculiar connection here where by the monadic nature
found upon the second subplane of the Cosmic physical plane is
brought into association with the astral nature ruled by the Lunar
Lords which is the second subplane of the Cosmic Physical plane
counting from below upwards. So in this relation, the Lunar Lords
are rendered subject to the Sun. These two signs participate in
the drama of the enfiring of matter, the elevation through purification
and aspiration of matter. Although the natives of these signs
can seem so very different in their outer appearances, they are
united by the sense of something higher which must be obeyed and
so their sense of discernment is very strong.
H.
I have not associated signs with the various senses but I feel
that both of these could be associated with the sense of smell
via their sixth Ray. And from another point of view, both are
involved in form production. Virgo we have seen as the mother
supervising the maturing process of the germ in the womb and Sagittarius
via its association with Mars and the Lunar Lords is intimately
involved with form production and also with the sexual instinct
involved in form production which in the early days represents
the quest of the polarized unit for its mate. Both signs are powerfully
connected therefore with the instinctual nature, the instinctive
intelligence of matter which processes are in the early days,
blind.
I.
So in one way this most material of the fire signs is related
to the earth sign, Virgo and to the instinct of matter to liberate
itself. Interestingly the process of gestation ruled by Virgo
takes archetypally nine months and Sagittarius is the ninth sign
and in a certain respect, therefore, represents the fulfillment
of the animal nature or the fulfillment of the Lunar elemental
nature. Going back to differences for a moment, Sagittarius represents
this coordinated, one pointed, lunar elemental known as the personality
and Virgo represents the Christ aspect of the soul achieving discriminating
control over the one pointed urges of the lunar elemental. As
we can see, the signs have their higher and lower aspects and
mix according to these aspects. The dynamics of their interaction
change constantly depending upon whether the superior or inferior
aspect is being considered.
J.
Going back, another important distinction or difference. Virgo
lost in detail. Sagittarius –a keen sense of direction. Contrasting
Virgo in association with the Pleiades, Sagittarius in relation
to the pole star. By the way, in terms of similarities, they both
have a strong galactic association as there is an immense cluster
of galaxies to be found in relation to the constellation Virgo
and Sagittarius itself rules the center of our galaxy as well
as the point towards which our Solar System and all related solar
systems are converging, the point upon which they are converging.
So, in one powerful sense upon the physical plane, Sagittarius
rules the point which embraces all points, that is the universal
point upon the physical plane though not the universal point upon
all planes.
