Secondarily, (assuredly, but not exclusively) Virgo transmits
R4, R4, R6, R1, and R2 through Mercury, the Moon, the veiled Neptune,
the veiled Vulcan, and, also, Jupiter—all these are its planetary
rulers on three levels—exoteric, esoteric and hierarchical.

11.
Associated with the stages immediately preceding the ‘birthing’,
form-regulating first initiation (EA 67, 471); then, with the cleansing, purifying
second initiations, and possibly with the decisive, Monad-establishing
sixth (introduction to true monadic living)
|
|
11.
Associated with the first five initiations: the soul/Self-revealing,
soul-law-imposing, Christ-birthing first; the emotion-controlling,
‘un-capsized’, ‘water-crossing’ second; the soul-illumined,
personality-transfiguring, three-aspect-synthesizing third;
the isolation-inducing, world-renouncing fourth; and the
supernally-lighted, mountain-peak-revelatory fifth. Saturn
(ruling Capricorn) does not follow a man onto the Cardinal Cross.
|
12. Virgo can be reasonably understood as influencing,
particularly, the cherishing, patient, maternally-loving heart
center (through the second ray), and the persistently devoted
solar plexus center (through the sixth). In addition
to its influence upon a number of smaller, sub-diaphragmatic
centers associated with the solar plexus, Virgo must have an
influence upon the ajna center—as an organ of discrimination
and discernment. The mysteries of generation are ruled by the
Moon, which rules Virgo esoterically; a sacral center association
is, thereby, reasonable. The six of the sacral
center leads to the twelve of the heart.
|
|
12.
Capricorn can be reasonably associated with the clear-seeing,
forcefully-penetrating, powerfully directing ajna and brow
centers, and the ‘dominating’, all-controlling crown
center. Capricorn must be connected to the magically materializing
throat and sacral centres via the third and seventh
rays (resonant to both centers). The humility-inducing centers
at the knees are also indicated. Also associated with Capricorn
are the central “jewels” in all the chakras.
|
13.
The zodiacal signs influence the Monad of every human being (EA 411, 637, TCF 1191); the influence from Virgo is powerful
in monadic life because the second manifested Creative Hierarchy
(Who are the “prototypes of the Monads”—TCF
1197) are ruled by Virgo and its hierarchical ruler, Jupiter.
One motivation of the descending Monad is the perfection of matter
(in this case, the substance of the first solar system). With
this mission, Virgo is intimately concerned.
|
|
13.
The zodiacal signs influence the Monad of every human being (EA 411, 637, TCF 1191); the influence from Capricorn causes
the Monad (even in immersion) to be guided by Shamballic and Logoic
Law. There are lines which the Monad may not cross as it
‘super-vises’ its own Self-extension. It must leave
its fragment ‘free within limits’; free-will (of a relative
kind) must not be violated. The initiatory power, flowing through
Monad from Capricorn, endows the Monad-in-extension with the power
to face every obstacle and re-ascend to its source. This re-ascent
is initiation.
|
14.
Within the Triad—Virgo (esoterically ruled in part by Neptune,
and hierarchically by second ray Jupiter, and transmitting,
itself, the second ray), is related primarily to buddhi
(the second aspect of the Triad), bestowing as it
does the second ray and a higher correspondence to “mother
love”—a divine, maternal compassion. Virgo is also associated
with the third ray, and the third divine aspect, and hence,
even if indirectly, with higher manas, the third
triadal aspect.
|
|
14. Within the Triad—Capricorn is most associated
with atma (first triadal aspect) and higher manas
(third triadal aspect). Capricorn transmits the first ray
which relates it to the will and law emanating from the atmic
plane. Capricorn transmits the third ray, as well, which relates
it not only to higher manas but, again, to atma,
for the atmic plane is the third systemic plane, and is
a plane of both law/will and mind—the atmic mind—God’s
mind as directly expressive of God’s will/law. Capricorn is less
related to buddhi, though it is the sign admitting (via
hierarchical Venus) into the buddhic dimension known as Hierarchy.
|
15.
In relation to the Solar Angel, and the soul-consciousness (and
causal body) through which it expresses—Virgo, like Cancer, can
be seen in the ‘mother’ role—with Virgo providing a nurturing
and discriminatively cleansing energy, utilized by the
Solar Angel to improve the quality of its personality manifestation.
Virgo, as the Solar Angel expresses it, is the will to manifest
love intelligently through matter, until the Christ energy pours
successfully through the personality-form and a relative perfection
is reached.
|
|
15. In relation to the Solar Angel, and the soul-consciousness
(and causal body) through which it expresses—Capricorn can be
understood as the will of the Solar Angel to master its
personality, through total soul-infusion leading to transfiguration
and subsequent crucifixion. Karmic confrontation with residual
darkness is enforced from ‘above’, and the power to transcend
matter bestowed. The will aspect of the Solar Angel is
strongly asserted, leaving the responsive personality no choice
but elevation. (cf. EP II 174) |
16.
Within the Personality—Virgo can be identified with the discriminative,
analytical, and selective processes of the lower
mental nature; with the cleansing and purification
of the astral nature; with the magnetic purity of the etheric
nature; with the general health and nutrition and
of the dense physical vehicle. Virgo, via the Moon, is particularly
related to the dense physical vehicle and to all personality substance
as a whole. (EA 194) (The
vehicular focus and its degree of prominence, depends upon the
stage of evolutionary development.)
|
|
16. Within the Personality—Capricorn can be identified
with the concretizing, regulatory and disciplining
processes of the lower mental nature; with processes which focus,
control and deepen the astral nature; with organizational
and co-ordinative processes within the etheric vehicle;
and the with maintenance and survival of the dense
physical vehicle—of which Capricorn represents the density.
(The vehicular focus and its degree
of prominence, depends upon the stage of evolutionary development.)

1.
Expressive of both the second and third aspects
of divinity, but especially well-rooted in the third. “Virgo is the focal point for the expression of the third aspect, that of
active intelligence. In that sign the highest function of matter
is symbolised.” (EA 194, also 280)
|
|
1.
Expressive primarily of the first and third aspects
of divinity. “CAPRICORN. This is the constellation by means of
which comes the conquering will which releases from form life
and initiates the man into the kingdom wherein the will aspect
(not the soul aspect) of divinity expresses itself.” (EA 620)
Capricorn is the major transmitter of the seventh ray which
is related to the first aspect. “The
seventh ray is, in the last analysis, the focussed differentiated
energy of Ray One as it expresses the will of the first aspect
of divinity on earth…” (EA 138) “the third and fifth rays work
pre-eminently through this sign, embodying the third major aspect
of divinity, active intelligence plus that of its subsidiary power,
the fifth Ray of Mind.” (EA 164)
|
2.
Cosmically associated principally with the Pleiades. “One of the most esoteric cycles is based upon certain conjunctions and respective
positions of Virgo and the Pleiades.” (EA 657) “Virgo is inseparable
from Leo and the Pleiades and the Hyades.” (EA 679) Virgo is related to several feminine
constellations which figure importantly in the astrology of the
form. “There is Cassiopea, Venus,
Coma Berenice, Andromeda and one or two others, as well as Virgo,
the Virgin, the most important of them all.” (EA 400)
|
|
2.
Related cosmically to the Pleiades. “…from
these three (The Pleiades, Capricorn, Mercury. A.A.B.) Man takes
a nature which is his today. Son of the Mother, born from the
tomb and showing after birth the light which he has taken from
them all.” (EA 433, also 427-428) Capricorn is necessarily
related to the Great Bear because, like Aries, and Leo, it transmits
the first ray. (cf. EA 417) Capricorn,
the “great sign of initiation” (EA
173) is almost certainly related to Sirius, “the great
star of initiation.” (EA 197) Venus completes a triangle.

Capricorn
|
1.
Virgo transmits the second ray constellationally. Virgo
is also the eleventh sign of the zodiac, counting by polarities
(Aries-Libra, Taurus-Scorpio, Gemini-etc.), which reinforces its
resonance with the second ray.
|
|
1.
Venus, the hierarchial ruler of Capricorn, is “pure love-wisdom”,
and hence, transmits the second ray. (EA 281)
|
2.
Virgo transmits the sixth ray constellationally.
|
|
2.
Venus, the hierarchical ruler of Capricorn, transmits the sixth
ray, probably monadically. (EA 595). Mars (exalted in Capricorn) transmits the sixth ray
|
3.
Virgo (the second oldest of the constellations) is associated
with the third ray—the ray of the previous solar system.
“…it might be said that Cancer
is an expression (in the stage of great advancement) of the first
half of the life cycle in solar system one, whilst Virgo is an
equally advanced expression of the second half” (EA 256).
|
|
3.
Capricorn transmits the third ray, constellationally. In
addition, Capricorn is the third sign of the zodiac on
the clockwise wheel, beginning number with Pisces. This numerical
fact reinforces the relationship of Capricorn to the third
ray. Saturn is the exoteric and hierarchical ruler of Capricorn
and transmits the third ray monadically (EPI 421), and,
probably, through its soul. Mars, exalted in Capricorn, participates
as the astral body in the constitution of a great third
ray Entity (EPII 99).
|
4.
Virgo is the sixth sign of the zodiac on the reversed wheel
and, hence, has numerical affinity with the number six
and with the sixth ray.
|
|
4.
See #2 above.
|
5.
Virgo is the seventh sign of the zodiac on the clockwise
wheel, IF one begins numbering from Pisces (which the Tibetan
does in relation to the sign, Leo). This seventh position
reinforces Virgo’s relationship to the seventh ray.
|
|
5.
Capricorn transmits the seventh ray constellationally.
Saturn has strong seventh ray associations through that
fact that it is the “logoic physical permanent atom” in relation
to the cosmic physical plane (TCF 406), hence strongly involved
in the manifestation of the cosmic physical plane. As well,
Vulcan is powerful in Capricorn (third decanate) and transmits
the first ray.
|
6.
Virgo is the eighth sign of the zodiac on the clockwise
wheel and hence is related to the Christ—Whose number is “eight”
(EA 37)—and to Mercury—the “Messenger at the
eighth gate.”
|
|
6.
Capricorn is the eighth sign of the zodiac on the reversed
wheel (numbering by polarities (Aries-Libra, Taurus-Scorpio,
etc.), and hence is related to the Christ, Whose number can be
understood as eight.
|
7.
Mercury is the exoteric ruler of Virgo (and also exalted) and
transmits the fourth ray.
|
|
7.
Capricorn is the fourth sign of the zodiac on the clock-wise
wheel—hence, resonant with the fourth ray (especially through
its rulership over ‘for-m’ and establishment). Venus, the
hierarchical ruler of Capricorn, may have some higher fourth
ray associations—harmony and beauty. Mars (exalted in Capricorn) is a major planet of conflict,
so it is difficult not to think that Mars has some strong fourth
ray association—perhaps within its personality vehicles. “The theme of that ray is "Harmony
through Conflict" and it is the lower aspect of the ray energy,
producing conflict which has hitherto controlled, and is climaxing
now through the impetus of the new incoming Shamballa force.”
(EA 328)
|
8.
Mercury has a close relation to the third ray. (EA 280)
|
|
8.
See #3 above.
|
9.
Mercury has a close relation to the fifth ray, through
its relation to the fifth scheme, the fifth round,
the fifth race and sub-race. “The fifth race is born under Mercury.” (EA 663)
|
|
9. Capricorn may, in some subtle matter, transmits the fifth
ray (independently of its hierarchial ruler Venus). Ray 5.—Concrete
Knowledge or Science, under the influence of Capricorn, focussed
through Venus, which will enable the man to take initiation.”
(EA 357) Also, “Capricorn is an earth sign and because the third
and fifth rays work pre-eminently through this sign, embodying
the third major aspect of divinity, active intelligence plus
that of its subsidiary power, the fifth Ray of Mind.
These pour through Capricorn to Saturn and to Venus and so reach
our planet, the Earth.” (EA 164) Note the word, “through.”
Venus, of course, is the hierarchical ruler of Capricorn, and
transmits the fifth ray. Saturn is associated with the
concrete mind (concretion pertains to the fifth ray).
Mars, exalted in Capricorn, rules “science” and the “five senses)
(EA 215) and, therefore, is related to the fifth ray, transmitting
it, conceivably, through its Monad.
|
10.
The Moon is the esoteric ruler of Virgo, and transmits the fourth
ray.
|
|
10.
See #7 above.
|
11.
The Moon is anciently related to the third ray, being associated
with dense physical “matter” and with the Moon Chain and the first
solar system in which the third ray was dominant.
|
|
11.
See #3 above.
|
12.
The Moon is also associated with the seventh ray, through
its rulership of the seventh manifested Creative Hierarchy
and its rulership of the dense part of the seventh plane.
|
|
12.
See #5 above.
|
13.
Vulcan is a veiled esoteric ruler in Virgo and transmits
the first ray.
|
|
13.
Capricorn transmits the first ray, constellationally. Capricorn
is also the tenth sign on the reversed wheel, hence numerologically
associated with the number one and, by numerical affinity,
with the first ray. Saturn, the exoteric and esoteric ruler,
is a strong transmitter of the first ray. (EA
450, 621). Mars, exalted in Capricorn, teaches “those whose
work lies along the lines of the destroyer”, hence must transmit
the first ray. (TCF 1179)
|
14.
.Vulcan, a veiled esoteric ruler in Virgo, has a close relation
to the number four—to the fourth kingdom (the Human
Kingdom), the fourth kingdom from the human (the
Mineral Kingdom) and to the fourth initiation.
|
|
14.
See #7 above.
|
15.
Vulcan has an association with the second ray, as Vulcan
is connected to the “heart of the sun.” (EA 393)
|
|
15.
See #1 above.
|
16.
Vulcan has associations with the fifth ray through concretion
and the seventh ray, through the mineral kingdom and the
principle of rhythm.
|
|
16.
See #9 above.
|
17.
Neptune is a veiled esoteric ruler of Virgo and transmits
the sixth ray.
|
|
17.
See#2 above.
|
18.
Neptune also transmits the second ray monadically. (EPI
421)
|
|
18.
See #1 above.
|
18.
Neptune is associated with the fourth ray through its rulership
of the fourth or buddhic plane, and with the third
ray through its associations with the “waters” which are “matter.”
(EA 666, 275)
|
|
18.
See #7 above.
|
19.
Jupiter is the hierarchical ruler of Virgo and transmits the second
ray.
|
|
19.
See #1 above.
|
20.
Jupiter also transmits the seventh ray through its association
with “ritualistic worship.” (EA 660)
|
|
20.
See #5 above.
|
21.
Jupiter has a possible connection with the sixth ray through
its exoteric rulership of Sagittarius and its enthusiastic nature.
|
|
21.
See #2 above.
|
22.
It is hard to conceive that Virgo, as a constellation, has no
relation to the seventh ray because of the traits demonstrated
by so many Virgoan individuals. In any case, Virgo is the ruler
of the seventh Creative Hierarchy (if the unmanifested
Hierarchies are included in the numbering).
|

Similarities
and Points of Cooperation Between the Influences |
Similarities
and Points of Cooperation
Between the Zodiacal Influences
A.
Virgo and Capricorn are both earth signs and again both relate
to the Christ process, Virgo to the birth of the Christ and Capricorn
to the relative apotheosis of the Christ principle.
Both are practical
signs and can be seen as relating to the lunar realms. Virgo through
its esoteric rulership by the Moon relates to all the Lunar vehicles
and Capricorn through its connection to the tenth creative Hierarchy
rules the human personalities or the dominant Lunar Lords.
Both are signs
suited to the handling of the material element, such as is found
in business pursuits. Both have ample intellect of a practical
nature and are well suited to planning. The analytical mind of
Virgo is well developed, via Mercury and Capricorn via Saturn
is always associated with the concrete mind as well as to a much
higher level of mind.
B.
Both signs are strongly involved in the initiatory process, Virgo
especially in the preparation for initiation as is often found
within the caves of the earth or the cave of the heart. And Capricorn
the transfiguration process where the fruits of initiation are
reaped. Both signs may be considered extremely materialistic in
their lower expressions, Capricorn ruling the earth bound soul
and of Virgo it being said, let matter reign. So both represent
materialistic repressions upon the human soul and spirit.
Both signs
can be seen as associated with the law, though perhaps Virgo is
more involved with observing the details of the law, the letter
of the law to which Capricorn as well is no foreigner. But the
general principles are more emphasized. Both signs can be considered
exacting and importantly they are both signs of discipline and
rigor. It is possible to achieve austerity and even a degree of
aridness under either of these signs. Neither of them is a sign
which allows indulgence of the form especially in the middle to
later stages of evolution. Naturally indulgence of the form is
always possible with any sign of the zodiac in the primitive days.
Therefore,
these are signs in which the lunar vehicles are disciplined. The
Moon is in detriment in Capricorn and Neptune, a planet related
to astrality, is also in its fall. While the Moon and Neptune
are esoteric rulers of Virgo, no wide latitude for indulgence
is given and emotion is rendered subservient to material and mental
demands. Neither of these signs is preeminently an emotional sign
and hence the control of the emotional body can be effected in
both. The Moon in fact ruling the emotional body although there
are other rulerships as well.
C.
It could be said that both of these planets are related to concrete
mindedness and are therefore not philosophic in temperament, but
more pragmatic in temperament. They are particularly good at appreciating
the processes of intelligence in matter rather than in the abstract.
Though it must be said that exceptions can be found to any statement
made. These are both performance signs as well.
The seventh
Ray comes powerfully through Capricorn and Virgo although the
seventh Ray is not distributed through it as a constellation,
is interestingly associated with the perfectionism associated
with the seventh Ray. I’ll straighten that
sentence out later.
There are
some signs which are adapted to bringing through an idea upon
the physical plane, to materializing the idea and Virgo and Capricorn
are two such. As a matter of fact, the second of the unliberated
Creative Hierarchies is ruled by Virgo. Its energy is Kriyashakti
and the commented appended by the Tibetan is “Materializing ideal.”
This fits in very well with Capricorn which is at this time, the
primary distributor of the seventh Ray.
Interestingly,
the Virgo Hierarchy is the seventh, counting down when the liberated
Creative Hierarchies are included in the count. So these are signs
of polish. They are also closely associated with the mineral kingdom,
both being earth signs. Although, Virgo extends that association
to the vegetable kingdom through its two and six rulerships, the
Rays two and six.
The concept
of the jewel is very closely related to these two. Capricorn,
because it rules all crystallizing processes and Virgo because
of the attention to detail which is required for the perfecting
of any process including a mineral process. Again, both of these
are signs of reserve and of caution.
There is in
both a respect for the form and a realization that the form must
be preserved and cherished. Although Capricorn in other phases
can be involved with the destruction of the form. Nevertheless,
these are both signs of preservation and can be considered therefore,
conservative.
D.
Progress made in both instances is along a tried and accepted
lines rather than along revolutionary lines. And so both of these
signs can represent materialistic obstruction. Let matter reign
and the earth bound soul. In philosophy, they tend towards positivism
and can easily get stuck in rationality. Of course all of this
is changed as the soul proceeds to develop and both indeed are
associated with the culture of soul consciousness.
Both signs
are involved with the following of the rules which promote soul
consciousness. And both signs are closely involved with entry
into the Spiritual Hierarchy via the initiatory process of course.
But in a more psychological sense, both of these signs are destroyers
of the ego. Interestingly Leo can represent the dominant self
conscious ego and Virgo is the sign neighboring Leo, hence producing
a contrary effect and contributes to the analysis of the ego,
the analysis of its false position as a dominating influence.
Capricornian
energy simply shatters the ego through the liberation of impersonal
energies. That is, the ego is liberated into impersonality and
then the truer ego, consciousness within the causal field, is
established. So both of these signs can be considered as powerful
in the manifestation of soul consciousness within the material
forms. And both are therefore extremely important in establishing
the kingdom of heaven. Both are related to the Will also because
Virgo has the attitude of the servant or of the disciple to the
Master and in Capricorn, the true Will energy is contacted and
there develops an appreciation for the Will of the father in heaven
which is followed with a degree of resignation and humility. Therefore,
both of these signs are related to the process of humility. In
Virgo, it can be easily seen and in Capricorn it is learned, for
Capricorn does rule the knees and the mountain top vision is humbling.
E. Another
important commonality comes through association with Vulcan, Vulcan
being the veiled decanate ruler of the third decanate of Capricorn
and the esoteric ruler of Virgo. And Vulcan rules the glorification
of matter. Both of these signs participate in that process. Virgo
perfects matter until it shines with the Christ light and Capricorn
so closely associated with the transfiguration rules the glorification
of matter which occurs at the third initiation. So although both
of these signs are materialistic on the lower levels of expression,
they control along with Taurus, the processes of the coming of
soul light into matter. In fact, both signs are closely related
to the third aspect of divinity and this can be seen in their
special relationship to the Pleiades the Pleiads being a powerful
source of maternal energy, extremely active in the first Solar
System, when Virgo was also with Cancer powerfully active and
there exists a triangle between the Pleiades born and Mercury
showing Capricorn as an agent in the distribution of intelligent
energy to our Solar System. So they do have a strong Pleiadian
connection and the rulership of these two signs by Mercury and
Saturn respectively, both planets being planets of the third Ray,
reinforces their association.
F. It
must be realized that just as human beings are versatile and capable
of handling many different kinds of apparently contradictory energies
skillfully, so the great entities such as solar logoi and constellational
logoi are equally capable of polychromism and can serve as lines
of transmission for diverse energies. For instance, we have seen
that Capricorn and Virgo are associated with the intelligence aspect
of Matter coming from the Pleiades, but equally they are associated
with the energy of the Christ. And the Pleiades as a source is responsible
not only for manasic energy which it shares with the heavenly men,
but acts as a source of buddhic energy as well, the energy which
relates more specifically to Hierarchy and indeed Capricorn and
the Pleiades both have been shown to relate to the process which
introduces the human consciousness into the spiritual hierarchy
of our planet.
