18.
Cancer has no specific relation to the first three initiations.
Since Neptune (inducing love and inclusive idealism) is so important
at the second initiation (EA
71, 297-298), Cancer must be implicated. After the third
initiation, the Cancerian can become “the Crab, who clears the ocean of matter which flows
around the soul of man” (EA 62) In subtle ways Cancer
must be related to the fourth (EA 218) and eighth initiations (relating
to unmanifested Hierarchy V—eighth from below). |
|
22.
Associated with the instinct-directing, ‘soul-ward’ orienting,
‘form-abstractive’ first initiation; with the fierily-baptizing,
ideal-containing, de-glamorizing, clear-eyed second initiation,
and with the direction-choosing, outward-bound, adventuring,
nirvanic sixth initiation—the initiation of Decision. |
6.
Cancer can be reasonably associated with the protective and
nourishment-giving centers in the breasts and, particularly,
with the instinctual, bi-polar, emotionally sensitive solar
plexus center. The disease, cancer, is strongly associated
with a disturbed, congested solar plexus; the sign and
the disease are, in fact, related. The sacral center
(involved in form-building) cannot be ignored. The chakras in
the ‘gripping’ hands are related. When Neptune (the esoteric
and hierarchical ruler) functions buddhically, the sign Cancer
can also be related to the compassionate, humanity-embracing
heart center. |
|
3. Sagittarius
can be reasonably associated with the insistently driving,
aspiring, fiery solar plexus center; with the instinctively-hunting,
passion-driven sacral center, and even with the center
at the base of the spine, where the latent fire (Mars)
awaits its rising; Earth (with its first ray Monad and a symbol
identical to the fourfold structure of the base center) is
the esoteric ruler of Sagittarius, connecting it to that lowest
center. The personality-directing, clear-seeing, force controlling
ajna center should also be influenced strongly by Sagittarius,
at a relatively high point in the evolutionary process.
|
51.
The zodiacal signs influence the Monad of every human being
(EA 411, 637, TCF 1191);
the influence from Gemini makes it possible for the “Brother”
who is the “prodigal son” to go forth into a “far country” (as
the Monad-in-substantial-immersion), and yet, remain
‘at home’ within the Father’s House as the “elder Brother” Who
did not go forth (i.e., as the Monad undiminished upon
its own level of consciousness). Thus is the Monad “in the world
yet not of the world”. Gemini endows the Monad with its
all-pervasive omnipresence relative to the human energy
system. “Having pervaded the entire
Universe with a fragment of myself, I remain.” |
|
4.
The zodiacal signs influence the Monad of every human being
(EA 411, 637, TCF 1191); the influence from Sagittarius guides the Monad on its descent into
material immersion, and, again, through an inherently flawless
sense of direction, guides the Monad upon its path of
return. Sagittarius contributes to the conviction of “monadic
destiny”, and destination. |
52.
Within the Triad—Gemini, the third sign, is related to
higher manas (the third aspect of the Triad).
Higher manas formulates into abstract thought the revelations
of the ‘idea-patterns’ to be found upon the buddhic plane. Gemini,
as its dualistic symbol reveals, is also related to the divine
love, pure reason and intuitive revelations of buddhi,
the second aspect of the Spiritual Triad. |
|
52. Within
the Triad—Sagittarius is focused in both buddhi and higher
manas—the abstract mind. Sagittarius transmits the fourth
ray, which relates to the fourth, or buddhic, plane
and the principle of buddhi. Sagittarius is one of
the intuitive signs. (EA 177) In Sagittarius, intuition
(fourth ray, second principle) governs aspiration (sixth
ray—which Sagittarius also transmits) (cf. EA 178) Sagittarius
is at once philosophical (utilizing the abstract mind) and intuitive.
The blend of buddhi and higher manas may be called
“universal or spiritual mind” which Sagittarius expresses in
relation to Mercury.
(EA 369) |
53.
In relation to the Solar Angel, and the soul-consciousness (and
causal body) through which it expresses—Gemini can be seen as
governing the pulsations of Solar-Angelic thought and vitality
which rhythmically stimulate the personality. Gemini can be
associated with the attempt the Solar Angel to ‘communicate’
with the personality. |
|
53. In
relation to the Solar Angel, and the soul-consciousness (and
causal body) through which it expresses—Sagittarius can be seen
as the will of the Solar Angel to inspire its personality to
a state of aspiration through the presentation of an elevating
vision of future spiritual possibilities. As well, when the
personality errs (as oft it does), Sagittarius represents the
‘guiding beam of light’ which offers a secure sense of spiritual
direction—directing, at length, to the mountain of initiation.
|
14.
Within the Personality—Cancer can be identified with the memory
and retentiveness of the lower mental nature; with the
sensitivity and receptivity of the astral nature;
with the de-vitalization or insufficient vitalization
of the etheric nature; and, with the tenacity of the
physical elemental as it seeks to perpetuate the integrity of
its life. In general, Cancer (through the Moon) is especially
associated with the dense physical form as a first solar system
‘residue’, and with the fourth or personality elemental (arising
from the lesser three). (The vehicular focus and its degree of prominence, depends
upon the stage of evolutionary development.) |
|
2.
Within the Personality—Sagittarius can be identified with the
directing, thought-projecting power of the lower
mental nature and its eventual responsiveness to intuitive
guidance; with the passional and eventual aspirational
processes of the astral nature; with the vibrancy and
buoyancy of the etheric nature; and with the general
tendency to energetic activity of the dense physical
nature. Sagittarius is particularly associated with the integrated,
one-pointed, disciplic personality.(The vehicular focus and its degree of prominence,
depends upon the stage of evolutionary development.)

5.
Expressive principally of the third or Intelligence aspect—in
relation to matter. (EA 351)The incarnation process under the rulership of Cancer
“is initiation into the creative
third aspect, the matter aspect and the world of intelligent activity.”
(EH 144) Since ruled by Neptune and related to the Pleiades,
Cancer is correlated to buddhi (TCF 1162), and thus, also, is linked to the
second aspect of divinity. |
|
5.
Expressive principally of the third aspect of divinity
because it is the third fire sign. “From Aries comes cosmic fire; from Sagittarius comes
planetary fire; and from Leo comes solar fire; and each of these
fires ‘clears the way by burning’ for the expression of the three
divine aspects: spirit (Aries), soul (Leo) and body (Sagittarius).”
(EA 293) Expressive of the second or consciousness
aspect, through its majority of soft-line constellation and planetary
rays. |
15.
Cosmically associated primarily with the Pleiades. “Pleiades—Cancer—Venus—Humanity”
(EA 416) |
|
6.
Definite cosmic association with the Pleiades and probably with
the Little Bear (particularly Polaris—the Pole Star). “Pleiades—Gemini/Sagittarius—Mercury”
(EA 50) “Gemini—Sagittarius—Mercury (which
are an expression of the Pleiades) enable the Probationary Disciple
to pass on to the Path of Accepted Discipleship.” “…The Pointers;
these point to the Pole star which is at this time a major ‘star
of direction’.” (EA 195) It should be noted that Sagittarius is
a major sign of direction. If Leo and Aries rule
the two Pointers, then the third fire sign, Sagittarius, should
be connected with Polaris. Also, Sirius, Gemini and Sagittarius
probably formed a triangle at the time of man’s individualization.
(cf. EA 355) Sagittarius and Betelgeuse are related to the third
cosmic path: “Source— Betelgeuse, via the sign Sagittarius.” (EA
1257) |

Three Constellations Connected (symbolically) with Cancer: a)
Ursa Major—the Great Bear; b) Ursa Minor—the Little Bear; c) Argo—the

constellation Connected with Cancer is Praesepe—the Beehive.
There are eighty three stars to be found ‘within’ this constellation.
(LOH 87-88) Tradition connects both Ursa Major and Minor with
“flock(s) of sheep” and “sheepfold(s)” |
|

Three Constellations Connected with Sagittarius: a) Lyra—the Seven
Stringed Harp; b) Ara—the Altar; c) Draco—the Serpent of Wisdom

1.
Cancer transmits the third ray constellationally. |
|
1.
Sagittarius is the ninth sign of the zodiac on the reversed
wheel. Nine is the number of the number three.
The third ray has a 900 year cycle. (EPI 348-349). The Earth, esoteric ruler of Sagittarius,
transmits the third ray as its personality ray. Mars serves
as the astral body to a third ray Entity. |
2.
Cancer transmits the seventh ray constellationally. Cancer
is also the seventh sign if one numbers by polarities (Aries-Libra,
Taurus-Scorpio, etc.), and thus has a further resonance with the
seventh ray. |
|
2.
Jupiter, the exoteric ruler, transmits the seventh ray
through “ritualistic worship” (EA 648, 660) |
Cancer
is the fourth sign of the zodiac on the reversed wheel
and, hence, has numerical affinity with the number four
and with the fourth ray. |
|
1.
Sagittarius transmits the fourth ray constellationally.
Further, Sagittarius is the fourth sign of the zodiac
upon the clockwise wheel, numbering from Pisces. (cf. also EA 357) Earth has a close relationship
to the fourth ray through its planetary order (fourth from
the Sun if Vulcan is counted) and its symbol. (the fourfold, even-armed
cross within a circle). Mars, the “God of War” must be related
to the lower aspect of the fourth ray—that which
produces the conflict which precedes harmony. |
3.
Cancer is the tenth sign of the zodiac on the clockwise
wheel and, hence, has numerical affinity with the number one
and with the first ray. This is not a strong representation
of the first ray. Only the presence of a generically veiled
Vulcan, which could be described as the ‘will asleep in matter’,
would bring in the first ray—mostly from the angle of resistance.
However, a great first ray power is indicated as latent—inured
in matter. |
|
3.
Earth, the esoteric ruler of Sagittarius, transmits the first
ray monadically. (EA 619) Mars (and its School) are expressive
of the first ray. (TCF 1179) |
4.
The Moon, the exoteric ruler of cancer, transmits the fourth
ray. |
|
4.
See #3 above. |
5.
The Moon is closely related to the third ray. (EA 280) |
|
5.
See #1 above. |
6.
The Moon is closely related to the seventh ray, through
its rulership of the seventh manifested Creative Hierarchy,
and its general association with dense physical matter. |
|
6.
See #2 above. |
7.
Neptune, the esoteric and hierarchical ruler of Cancer (and exalted,
with Jupiter, as well), transmits the sixth ray. |
|
7.
Sagittarius transmits the sixth ray constellationally—with
especial strength. Numbering the signs by polarities (Aries-Libra,
Taurus-Scorpio, etc.), Sagittarius is the sixth in order, giving
it numerical affinity with the sixth ray. Jupiter, the
exoteric ruler, has possible sixth ray associations through
enthusiasm and the “worship” aspect of ritual Mars, the hierarchical
ruler, transmits the sixth ray. |
8.
Neptune also transmits the second ray, monadically. (EPI
421) |
|
8.
Jupiter, the exoteric ruler of Sagittarius, transmits the second
ray, most probably through its soul. Earth, the esoteric ruler
of Sagittarius, transmits the second ray through its second
ray soul (EA 619). |
9.
Neptune is associated with the fourth plane, the buddhic
plane, and with the energy of buddhi. “”No man begins to coordinate the buddhic vehicle until
he comes under the influence of Neptune…. When this happens, his
personality horoscope will show this influence as dominant” (TCF
899) |
|
9.
See #3 above. |
10.
Neptune, as “God of the Waters” is associated with “matter” and,
hence, with the third ray. “Neptune is as you know, the God of the waters, and
the term “water” covers many angles of the esoteric wisdom, such
as: The whole concept of matter—universal and itemised….” (EA
275) |
|
10.
See #1 above. |
11.
Jupiter is exalted in Cancer and transmits the second ray. |
|
11.
See #9 above. |
12.
Jupiter is exalted in Cancer and transmits the seventh
ray through “ritualistic worship.” (EA 660) |
|
12.
See #2 above. |
13.
Jupiter (exalted in Cancer) through its enthusiasm and aspirational
nature has defensible connections to the sixth ray. |
|
13.
See#8 above. |
14.
There is no direct transmission of the fifth ray through Cancer.
Only Vulcan (as generically ruled by the early Moon) can be considered
to have a fifth ray association (in relation to the processes
of condensation within the mineral kingdom). |
|
14.
Sagittarius transmits the fifth ray constellationally.
Further, Sagittarius is the fifth sign on the clock-wise
wheel and hence, has numerical affinity with the fifth
ray. Mars, the hierarchical ruler, has strong fifth ray
relations, through its orange color and its connection to science
and the five senses. |

Similarities
and Points of Cooperation Between the Influences |
Similarities
and Points of Cooperation
Between the Zodiacal Influences
Both of these
signs are closely related to the emotional body through its rulership
by the Moon.
The sign Cancer
has natural affinity with the astral plane which in a sense is
the great ocean of sentiency.
Sagittarius,
through its hierarchical rulership by Mars, distributor of the
6th Ray, finds itself to be the ruler of the lunar
lords and is particularly associated with the direction which
the astral lives will take.
Will they
follow the path of directed lower desire, or the fiery upward
path of aspiration? The Moon and Mars, we know, two of the rulers,
are connected therefore with the solar plexus which can be considered
the organ of the astral plane. The difference of course being
the cold and wet and “astrality” of Cancer and the fiery astrality
of Sagittarius.
Both signs,
also are associated with the physical body but the term the physical
body must be looked at in a wide sense. The Moon is the ruler
of the strictly physical form, the lower 3 sub-planes. Earth
can be considered the ruler of the ethers – the higher 4 sub-planes.
Cancer, through
its association with the Moon, being also the 4th sign,
and the dense physical body being the 4th aspect of
the lower quaternary, will be therefore associated with the dense
physical body. Sagittarius has a strong connection, through its
esoteric rulership by the earth, with the etheric body.
This is re-enforced
by the fact that its opposite sign Gemini, is also directly related
to the etheric body and almost invariably, the opposites refer
to, and have some degree of dominion over the field which each
other rules – again, giving the triplicity Leo, Aries, Sagittarius,
Monad, Soul and Body.
Sagittarius
is directly related to the body but as has been shown recently,
Cancer does rule the synthesis of the 5 aspects of manas as its
distribution of the 3rd Ray would suggest and Sagittarius
itself, is always associated from one perspective, with higher
mind.
So there is
much that is inducing of high mentality in these two signs especially
in highly developed individuals and Cancer, rather than being
a sign of strict limitation and experience impeding rings-pass-not,
as it is in the early days, proves on the higher turn of the spiral,
to be a sign relating to greatly expanding oceanic consciousness.
Another similarity
therefore comes forward, that of expansive vision. Sagittarius
is ever the philosopher under its exoteric rulership by Jupiter,
giving a broad and synthetic point of view, also it is ruled by
the 3rd Ray through its rulership by Earth and of Cancer
which synthesizes the five aspects of manas and in which the planet
of expanded consciousness, Jupiter is exalted (note the Jupiter
connection).
Of Cancer
it can be said that expanded vision is also a high goal for in
this sign, for the disciple and the initiate, the mantram, “The
whole is seen as One” applies and so because of their relationship
to Jupiter and probably to the wide views of the 3rd
Ray, which has rulership over the realm of higher manas, comprehensiveness
is shared by these 2 signs and naturally enough, great devotion,
for the 6th Ray is prominent in both signs.
Sagittarius
being the major distributor of the 6th Ray at this
time and hierarchically ruled by Mars, (planet of the 6th
Ray) and Cancer being ruled by Neptune, esoterically and hierarchically
giving profound devotion.
So there is
great adhesive power in each of these signs. Cancer may insist
upon control and Sagittarius give far more freedom but they share
the tendency of consistent approach towards that to which they
are devoted.
In another
respect one of the purposes of these 2 signs is to make the body,
the combination of the dense physical body and the etheric body,
a fit receptacle for the higher consciousness.
When one looks
at the Rays distributed through Cancer and Sagittarius, an amazing
thing appears. ancer
is like the bread and Sagittarius the meat in the sandwich. Cancer
with its 3rd and 7th Rays and Sagittarius
with its 4, 5, 6 give you the entire range of the 5 manasic rays
which are related to the process of manifestation and when you
combine the strong 6th Ray manifested in both signs,
you get a devotion to the processes of manifestation and we realize
that it is focussed desire which brings about the process of re-birth.
The lords
of ceaseless and persevering devotion, focus that devotion upon
the re-birth process until the promised freedom can be achieved
legitimately. Interestingly, when one considers the Catholic
church and its defence of the birth process, its strong interest
in propagation, one can see a blend of these two signs for the
ardor and devotion of that church is clearly Sagittarian and its
emphasis upon the maternal aspect is powerfully related to Cancer,
Virgo too can be seen as involved.
So I think
we can see that the blend of Sagittarius and Cancer, from one
perspective, will keep the race in incarnation.
Remember too,
that Sagittarius is associated with the sacral center as equally
are its neighboring signs Libra and Scorpio and also with the
principal of fecundity, through its Jupiter rulership and its
earth rulership.
The Sagittarian
explorer even loves to be exposed to the great proliferations
of form and species which cover the face of the planet. So there
is much in these two signs that relates to the downward directing
of desire into form but equally later, through the combination
of Mars/Neptune, the elevation out of form also is achieved.
