11.
Cancer has no specific relation to the first three initiations.
Since Neptune (inducing love and inclusive idealism) is so important
at the second initiation (EA
71, 297-298), Cancer must be implicated. After the third
initiation, the Cancerian can become “the Crab, who clears the ocean of matter which flows
around the soul of man” (EA 62) In subtle ways Cancer
must be related to the fourth (EA 218) and eighth initiations (relating
to unmanifested Hierarchy V—eighth from below). |
|
11.
Association with refuse-flushing, fire-cleansing, fellowship-inducing
second initiation; the ego-negating, light-pervading,
soul-inspiring third initiation; the personality-renouncing,
life-energizing fourth initiation; and, conceivably,
with the abundant life of the beneficently organizing fifth
degree. |
12.
Cancer can be reasonably associated with the protective and
nourishment-giving centers in the breasts and, particularly,
with the instinctual, bi-polar, emotionally sensitive solar
plexus center. The disease, cancer, is strongly associated
with a disturbed, congested solar plexus; the sign and
the disease are, in fact, related. The sacral center
(involved in form-building) cannot be ignored. The chakras in
the ‘gripping’ hands are related. When Neptune (the esoteric
and hierarchical ruler) functions buddhically, the sign Cancer
can also be related to the compassionate, humanity-embracing
heart center. |
|
12. Aquarius
can be reasonably associated with the entire abundantly-radiating,
synthetic crown center, and the united radiation of
the chakra centers as a whole. When the ajna center
responds to the universal mind, the envisioning of the archetypally-destined
future appears. Aquarius transmits the third ray, and thus
relates to the throat center (through ruling Saturn,
Uranus and Vulcan as well). Aquarius, is esoterically ruled
by Jupiter, the planet controlling the group-inclusive heart
center. The evolving Aquarian is subject to many emotional
highs and lows, thus connecting Aquarius to the solar plexus
center. (EA 141-142) Also, through Uranus, with the form-creating
sacral center which generates “waters of life” in a
more material sense. As well, seventh-ray Uranus is numerically
related to the seventh or basal center, bringing Aquarius
into the relation.
|
13.
The zodiacal signs influence the Monad of every human being
(EA 411, 637, TCF 1191);
the influence from Gemini makes it possible for the “Brother”
who is the “prodigal son” to go forth into a “far country” (as
the Monad-in-substantial-immersion), and yet, remain
‘at home’ within the Father’s House as the “elder Brother” Who
did not go forth (i.e., as the Monad undiminished upon
its own level of consciousness). Thus is the Monad “in the world
yet not of the world”. Gemini endows the Monad with its
all-pervasive omnipresence relative to the human energy
system. “Having pervaded the entire
Universe with a fragment of myself, I remain.” |
|
13.
The zodiacal signs influence the Monad of every human being
(EA 411, 637, TCF 1191);
the influence from Aquarius governs the large monadic groups
or ‘monadic ashrams’, which aggregations exist upon the
monadic plane. The universal awareness of the Monad is
inspired and enhanced by the Aquarian energy. The Monad is a
‘center of synthesis’ and a ‘center within synthesis’.
The Aquarian energy stimulates the universality and synthetic
awareness of the Monad. |
14.
Within the Triad—Gemini, the third sign, is related to
higher manas (the third aspect of the Triad).
Higher manas formulates into abstract thought the revelations
of the ‘idea-patterns’ to be found upon the buddhic plane. Gemini,
as its dualistic symbol reveals, is also related to the divine
love, pure reason and intuitive revelations of buddhi,
the second aspect of the Spiritual Triad. |
|
14.
Within the Triad—Aquarius is related principally to higher
manas and to atma as both of them reflect, to differing
degrees, the Universal Mind (EA 241, 322, 495). Aquarius transmits the third ray constellationally (EA 138), and has rulers or sub-rulers which
do the same. Aquarius “expresses the universal consciousness
of the Great Bear” linking it to atma, in yet another
way. The energy of Aquarius, as well, stimulates and blends
with buddhi, principally by inducing loving group-cohesion.
The Tibetan speaks of “universal love of the truly developed
Aquarian.” (EA 136) This is an expression of buddhi. |
15.
In relation to the Solar Angel, and the soul-consciousness (and
causal body) through which it expresses—Gemini can be seen as
governing the pulsations of Solar-Angelic thought and vitality
which rhythmically stimulate the personality. Gemini can be
associated with the attempt the Solar Angel to ‘communicate’
with the personality. |
|
15.
In relation to the Solar Angel, and the soul-consciousness (and
causal body) through which it expresses—Aquarius represents
the dowering of the personality with all super-human, transcendental
gifts which the Solar Angel may safely bestow. Aquarius represents
the patient service of the Solar Angel to its long-developing
personality, and the consequent elevation of the human soul
from the human to the super-human state of the fifth kingdom—the
Kingdom of Souls. Aquarius rules the generous distribution of
beneficent Solar-Angelic radiation to (and through) its
personality |
16.
Within the Personality—Cancer can be identified with the memory
and retentiveness of the lower mental nature; with the
sensitivity and receptivity of the astral nature;
with the de-vitalization or insufficient vitalization
of the etheric nature; and, with the tenacity of the
physical elemental as it seeks to perpetuate the integrity of
its life. In general, Cancer (through the Moon) is especially
associated with the dense physical form as a first solar system
‘residue’, and with the fourth or personality elemental (arising
from the lesser three). (The vehicular focus and its degree of prominence, depends
upon the stage of evolutionary development.) |
|
16.
Within the Personality—Aquarius can be identified with the power
to vitalize, unify and synthesize thought,
which eventually develops within the lower mental nature; with
the cleansing, drying, and eventual distributive
radiation of the love-responsive astral nature; with the
electric vitalization of the etheric nature; and, in
general, with the nervous animation of the dense physical
form. Aquarius “is eventually
connected with the physical permanent atom.” (EA
302) (The vehicular focus
and its degree of prominence, depends upon the stage of evolutionary
development.) |

|
1.
Expressive principally of the third or Intelligence aspect—in
relation to matter. (EA 351)The incarnation process under the rulership of Cancer
“is initiation into the creative
third aspect, the matter aspect and the world of intelligent activity.”
(EH 144) Since ruled by Neptune and related to the Pleiades,
Cancer is correlated to buddhi (TCF 1162), and thus, also, is linked to the
second aspect of divinity. |
|
1.
Expressive, principally, of the third divine aspect “…the
third ray expresses itself powerfully through this sign” (EA 138)—strongly connected, however, with both the first and second
aspects. “At this time and
in a peculiar manner, the initiate-consciousness sees the Hierarchy
as primarily energised by life, and by the energy of Aquarius,
carrying a hitherto unknown aspect of the life energy of deity.”
(R&I 229) Aquarius rules Hierarchy. “…our
Hierarchy [is] (an expression of the second aspect of divinity)…”
(EA197) |
2.
Cosmically associated primarily with the Pleiades. “Pleiades—Cancer—Venus—Humanity”
(EA 416) |
|
2.
Strong cosmic association with the Pole Star, Alcyone, also an
invisible constellation, and the Great Bear: “The influence which emanates from the Pole Star and
which is such a potent factor in our solar system reaches our
planet via the sign Aquarius.” (TCF 1263) “Aquarius, Alcyone and Humanity constitute
a most interesting triangle of force. Alcyone is one of the seven
Pleiades and is called the ‘star of the Individual’ and sometimes
the ‘star of intelligence’.” (EA 200) “The source of energy to
which they respond may be regarded as the Pole Star. It should
nevertheless be pointed out that this star serves only as a blind
for a constellation which lies behind,—a constellation which exists
only in etheric matter. It is consequently ignored by astronomers,
though its influence is exceedingly potent within our system.”
(TCF 1262) Also, “Aquarius—expresses the universal consciousness of the
Great Bear.” (EA 349) |
3.
Three Constellations Connected (symbolically) with Cancer: a)
Ursa Major—the Great Bear; b) Ursa Minor—the Little Bear; c) Argo—the

There are eighty three stars to be found ‘within’ this constellation.
(LOH 87-88) Tradition connects both Ursa Major and Minor with
“flock(s) of sheep” and “sheepfold(s)” |
|

Aquarius
|
1.
Cancer transmits the third ray constellationally. |
|
1.
“The third ray expresses itself powerfully through” Aquarius
constellationally. (EA 138). Aquarius is also the third sign of
the zodiac on the clock-wise wheel, therefore having numerical
affinity with the third ray. Uranus transmits the third
ray (probably through its personality) as does Saturn (considered
an alternative ruler in this sign) through its Monad, and probably,
also, its soul. The Moon-veiled Uranus also transmits the third
ray. |
2.
Cancer transmits the seventh ray constellationally. Cancer
is also the seventh sign if one numbers by polarities (Aries-Libra,
Taurus-Scorpio, etc.), and thus has a further resonance with the
seventh ray. |
|
2.
Uranus transmits the seventh ray. Saturn has strong seventh
ray associations. Jupiter (esoteric ruler) transmits the seventh
ray. |
3.
Cancer is the fourth sign of the zodiac on the reversed
wheel and, hence, has numerical affinity with the number four
and with the fourth ray. |
|
3.
The Moon (hierarchical ruler) is the veiling transmitter of the
fourth ray. Moon-veiled Vulcan is closely related to the
fourth ray, the fourth kingdom, and the fourth
initiation. Neptune ( a Moon-veiled hierarchical ruler)
is associated with the fourth ray through its relationship to
buddhi, and to the fourth , or buddhic, plane. |
4.
Cancer is the tenth sign of the zodiac on the clockwise
wheel and, hence, has numerical affinity with the number one
and with the first ray. This is not a strong representation
of the first ray. Only the presence of a generically veiled
Vulcan, which could be described as the ‘will asleep in matter’,
would bring in the first ray—mostly from the angle of resistance.
However, a great first ray power is indicated as latent—inured
in matter. |
|
4.
Aquarius, itself, may have implicate first ray associations.
“Aquarius—expresses the universal
consciousness of the Great Bear” (EA 349) The Great Bear
(as a whole) transmits the first ray. (cf.
TCF 146). Aquarius, is the tenth sign on the reversed wheel, numbering
by polarities (Aries-Libra, Taurus-Scorpio, etc.) and thus has
numerical resonance with the first ray. Uranus,
the exoteric ruler, transmits the first ray monadically.
(EPI 421) Saturn, a possible alternative ruler in Aquarius, transmits
the first ray probably in its personality, but perhaps
its soul. (EA 450) Moon-veiled
Vulcan and Uranus both transmit the first ray—the first
as the monadic ray, the second, probably, as the soul ray. |
5.
The Moon, the exoteric ruler of cancer, transmits the fourth
ray. |
|
5.
See #3 above. |
6.
The Moon is closely related to the third ray. (EA 280) |
|
6.
See #1 above. |
7.
The Moon is closely related to the seventh ray, through
its rulership of the seventh manifested Creative Hierarchy,
and its general association with dense physical matter. |
|
7.
See #2 above. |
8.
Neptune, the esoteric and hierarchical ruler of Cancer (and exalted,
with Jupiter, as well), transmits the sixth ray. |
|
8.
Neptune (a Moon-veiled hierarchical ruler) transmits the
sixth ray. Enthusiastic Jupiter has a probable connection
to the sixth ray. |
9.
Neptune also transmits the second ray, monadically. (EPI
421) |
|
9.
Aquarius is the eleventh sign on the reversed wheel. Since
eleven sums to two, Aquarius has numerical affinity with
the second ray. Jupiter, the esoteric ruler of Aquarius,
transmits the second ray. Neptune, a Moon-veiled hierarchical
ruler, transmits the second ray monadically. Vulcan (a
Moon-veiled hierarchical ruler) is associated with the “heart
of the Sun” (EA ), and Uranus (exoteric ruler) is placed in
a line of second ray transmission from Sirius, and participates
in the three lower vehicles (probably as the mental body) of
a great second ray Entity (EPII 99) |
10.
Neptune is associated with the fourth plane, the buddhic
plane, and with the energy of buddhi. “”No man begins to coordinate the buddhic vehicle until
he comes under the influence of Neptune…. When this happens, his
personality horoscope will show this influence as dominant” (TCF
899) |
|
10.
See #3 above. |
11.
Neptune, as “God of the Waters” is associated with “matter” and,
hence, with the third ray. “Neptune is as you know, the God of the waters, and
the term “water” covers many angles of the esoteric wisdom, such
as: The whole concept of matter—universal and itemised….” (EA
275) |
|
11.
See #1 above. |
12.
Jupiter is exalted in Cancer and transmits the second ray. |
|
12.
See #9 above. |
13.
Jupiter is exalted in Cancer and transmits the seventh
ray through “ritualistic worship.” (EA 660) |
|
13.
See#2 above. |
14.
Jupiter (exalted in Cancer) through its enthusiasm and aspirational
nature has defensible connections to the sixth ray. |
|
14.
See #8 above. |
15.
There are no direct fifth ray transmissions through Cancer. |
|
15.
Aquarius transmits the fifth ray constellationally. Uranus,
the exoteric ruler, (and a veiled hierarchial rulers) can
stand for “exoteric science” (EP 149) and, hence, has fifth ray associations.
Saturn, a possible alternative ruler, is associated with the concrete
mind and, hence, with the fifth principle. Vulcan, (a
veiled hierarchical ruler) relates to the concretion and physical
precipitation, as does the fifth ray. |

Cancer is a mass sign. |
|
29.
The Life of the Christ from an Aquarian Perspective: “The
expression of this influence has been beautifully given to us
in the story of the Last Supper. Christ sent His disciples into
the city to find the man ‘bearing a pitcher of water’ upon his
shoulder. This is the symbol of the sign Aquarius—the sign in
which the universality of the water of life will become a factor
in human consciousness; then we shall indeed all sit down eventually

assuaging the thirst of humanity.” (EA 566) |

Similarities

Similarities
and Points of Cooperation
Between the Zodiacal Influences
One of the key
connections between Cancer and Aquarius is the field of consciousness
itself. Consciousness is a measure of sensitivity and contact between
subject and object. Cancer initially rules mass consciousness and
Aquarius, group consciousness.
Eventually Aquarius
moves towards universal consciousness and even the sign Cancer itself
can be spiraled upward to include the consciousness of the cosmic
astral plane. But consciousness is one and that which distinguishes
one category of consciousness from another, is merely the range
and sensitivity of contact.
With respect
to receptivity, and both Cancer and Aquarius are both very receptive
signs, the Moon and Neptune are powerful in their influence for
the Moon is the orthodox ruler of Cancer and hierarchical ruler
of Aquarius where is veils Neptune and Neptune of course is powerful
in Cancer.
Neptune is the
planet of consciousness, consciousness is the 2nd aspect, the relation
between subject and object and Neptune is the premier 2nd Ray planet,
the planet both of touch and sensitivity and of impression.
Even though
I have divided the emphasis of Cancer and Aquarius, to pertain to
different spheres of activity, mass consciousness and group consciousness,
there is a sense in which they both pertain to the consciousness
of matter, and both pertain to group consciousness.
For Cancer is
related to mass life and directly to matter via the Moon, the symbol
of the material element and Aquarius has a hierarchical rulership
by the Moon and rules the 12th Creative Hierarchy or the 1st, counting
from below upwards, the baskets of TAPE
NO. 6
Nourishment
- the hierarchy most associated with the energy of matter. It is
curious that with respect to the Cosmic astral plane, or the most
material aspect of that plane, the Cancerian hierarchy rules (ie
on the 7th sub-plane of the Cosmic Astral plane) and thereby presides
over what might be called materialization (number 7) through the
agency of desire (no. 6, ie the Cosmic astral plane, the 6th Cosmic
plane) and interestingly enough, Neptune itself is not only associated
with the Sea of Light but with the great ocean of matter. Matter
can be considered the 2nd, the 3rd or 4th.
At first it
is the 2nd because there is a polarisation between Purusha and Prakriti,
between spirit and matter. Later it is associated with the 3rd aspect
of Divinity because the Sun, which normally comes 3rd, occupies
the place of the 2nd and if an even closer division is created among
the parental triad, making it a parental tetrad, we can differentiate
between etheric substance and material substance and matter becomes
the 4th.
At any rate,
Neptune is not only a planet of sublimity but has its material counter-part,
the great sea of passive, receptive substance, undifferentiated
actually for it has not yet been divided into discrete units by
the entrance of spirit and this is interesting because Neptune is
a planet associated with a force which denies differentiation.
So Aquarius
and Cancer, through their association with Neptune, are associated
with Mulaprakriti (receptive substance, undifferentiated), that
through which the consciousness aspect must pour, pervading matter,
sensitizing matter. All of the planets have their higher and lower
correlations.
This we have
seen in relation to Vulcan as well and even Uranus could be connected
with the atomic energy of matter, the bound electricity. Any sign
which has both Neptune and the Moon as prominent rulers will be
involved in telepathic receptivity. The book Telepathy and the
Etheric Vehicle demonstrates how important is the etheric
body in the receptive and transmitting process.
The unit of
etheric/physical body can be seen as the wedding of Aquarius and
Cancer, rendering consciousness upon the physical plane, sensitive
to all the etheric body receives just as Aquarius and Gemini can
be considered counter-parts through the number 3, so can Cancer
and Capricorn through the number 4 -- always numbering from Aries.
In this way
the duad Aquarius/Cancer is very much like the duad Gemini/Cancer
and the 2 signs Aquarius & Cancer together with their Neptunian
rulership makes the physical plane, both etheric and dense physical,
increasingly responsive to subtle impression via the planet Neptune
which is the great receiver.
In certain respects,
Uranus is the great sender with its assertive wilfull nature whereas
Cancer is suited only to receive, Aquarius can either receive or
send. I have also noticed that the combination of Aquarius/Cancer,
considered in a more down-to-earth and personal way, gives a facility
for understanding human nature.
Perhaps for
understanding the relationship of the individual, lunar unit to
the larger whole for both signs are ruled by the Moon and the Moon
represents everything personal.
When the Moon
is prominent, that which is personal can be responde.d to and understood.
This of course is the province of Cancer but where Aquarius exists,
not only can the lunar aspect be understood but it can be related
to the larger whole and put into perspective.
Frequently,
Aquarians have a great facility as humanitarians and as those who
have something in common with everybody. Of course the combination
of Cancer and the Moon also represents the common touch.
So here we can
see both Aquarius and Cancer in touch with the masses. Both of
them naturally have higher reaches and it would be a mistake to
consider Aquarius as the only ruler of a universalized consciousness
for Cancer via Neptune gives access to the great ocean of consciousness
because it rules the hierarchy which is simply on the verge of liberation
but not quite liberated.
It shows that
with respect to our consciousness, Cancer can represent a very high
influence indeed, perhaps the highest with which we can still be
somewhat in touch, giving us entry into that level of sensitivity
which we have called the Cosmic astral plane and making of the Christ,
who through the 7th initiation, is now able to approach the Cosmic
astral plane, making of him the good shepherd and the protector
of human and angelic lives upon the Cosmic physical plane.
It is interesting
how Ca ncer
can represent the greatest sense of entombment and concealment of
consciousness upon the physical plane and also the point at which
consciousness can be released altogether from the Cosmic physical
plane. In this respect, Cancer represents a still higher gate than
Capricorn which liberates into the life of Hierarchy. Cancer is
indeed the sign where both land and water meet and land can be considered
the entire Cosmic physical plane whereas water in this case, relates
to the Cosmic astral plane.
