Esoteric Healing - Introductory Remarks

Introductory Remarks

The entire subject of Healing is as old as the ages themselves, and has ever been the subject of investigation and experiment. But as to the right use of the healing faculty and forces, the knowledge is in its infancy. Only in this age and generation is it at last possible to impart the laws of magnetic healing, and to indicate the causes of those diseases - originating in the three inner bodies - which today devastate the human frame, cause endless suffering and pain, and usher man through the portal which leads to the world of bodiless existence. Only today is man at the point in the evolution of his consciousness where he can begin to realize the power of the subjective worlds, and the new and vast science of psychology is his response to this growing interest. Processes of adjustment, of elimination and of cure engage the minds of all thoughtful people as well as of all suffering people. We have much to do, and I ask therefore for patience on your part.

JC: Dear Group, owing to a number of recent thoughts and ideas etc I have decided to start a sequential study of DK's stupendous treaties on esoteric healing. It will not be a word for word examination but a commentary [from time to time] on those points which attract. It seems a good time to get some of the material out on the net and into a group esoteric forum [the radio]. I have wanted to do this for some time and now seem's a good time to do so.  "We have much to do, and I ask therefore for patience on your part."

It is particularly appropriate that the Master states, "Processes of adjustment, of elimination and of cure engage the minds of all thoughtful people as well as of all suffering people." There will be a wealth of knowledge, insights and thoughts from the group mind on Polaris and this should expand our understanding and group service.

When one enters the realm of healing, one enters a world of much esoteric knowledge, and of an infinity of conclusions, and one is faced with the formulations of many minds, who, through the ages, have sought to heal and to help. The why and the wherefore of disease have been the subject of endless investigations and speculations, and much definite deduction has been made as to the cures of such complaints; there has been also much formulation of methods, of techniques, of formulae, of prescription, of varied manipulations and of [2] theories. All these serve to fill the mind with many ideas - some correct, some erroneous - and this makes it most difficult for new ideas to enter and for the student to assimilate the hitherto unknown.

JC: We are dealing with "an infinity" of conclusions and formulations which makes assimilating the esoteric work hard but rewarding; it is with this task with which we shall be dealing.

Aspirants lose much by refusing to let go of that which the lower mind cherishes. When they do succeed in being entirely open minded and are ready to accept the new theories and hypotheses, they discover that the old and dearly held truth is not really lost, but only relegated to its rightful place in a larger scheme.

All initiates of the Ageless Wisdom are necessarily healers, though all may not heal the physical body. The reason for this is that all souls that have achieved any measure of true liberation are transmitters of spiritual energy. This automatically affects some aspect of the mechanism which is used by the souls they contact. When I employ the word "mechanism" in these instructions I refer to different aspects of the instrument, the body or form nature, through which all souls seek manifestation. I refer, therefore, to:

1.  The dense physical body, which is the sum total of all the organisms which compose it; these possess the varying functions which enable the soul to express itself on the physical or objective plane as part of a greater and more inclusive organism. The physical body is the response apparatus of the indwelling spiritual man and serves to put that spiritual entity en rapport with the response apparatus of the planetary Logos, the Life in which we live and move and have our being.

JC: The physical mechanism as DK informs is but an automaton and a un principled sheath of karmic matter which we as souls are in process of redeeming and refining as a vehicle of service. It is also an animal body, much refined but without any true spiritual principle in itself other than the indwelling soul via the lower sheaths. The human kingdom, a 4th ray kingdom has struggled much and is dealing much with karmic residue which forms the very atoms that constitute the physical, astral and mental sheaths. With these come possibilities of disease or dis-harmony, and it is with this the treaties deals.

2.  The etheric body, which has one main objective. This is to vitalize and energize the physical body and thus integrate it into the energy body of the Earth and of the solar system. It is a web of energy streams, of lines of force and of light. It constitutes part of the vast [3] network of energies which underlies all forms whether great or small (microcosmic or macrocosmic). Along these lines of energy the cosmic forces flow, as the blood flows through the veins and arteries. This constant, individual - human, planetary and solar - circulation of life-forces through the etheric bodies of all forms is the basis of all manifested life, and the expression of the essential non-separateness of all life.

JC: The etheric body is also known as the "golden bowl" and mirrors the light of the soul. The lines of vitality or the etheric web is the network of force with lets the  "cosmic forces flow, as the blood flows through the veins and arteries" and therefore the "blood is the life". Just as the consciousness thread of the soul fecundates within the pineal gland within the head, so does the life thread of the soul within the human heart.

The "blood is the life," Gen., IX, 4.

The blood stream is governed by Neptune. EH 143.

The vital fluid, the blood. LOM 244.

Plato was perfectly aware "that blood is a fluid in constant motion." Isis1 237.

The center of the Chalice is close to the blood reservoir. AY 156.

JC: MM states regarding transfusion of the blood, right or best results will be obtained by taking into account three usefull aspects for consideration.

1.  Physical properties.  This is already being done.

2.  Psychic quality. This is under consideration by psychologists such as many spiritual disciples whether in the medical or not.

3.  Karmic condition.  It is said that the time will come probably as an eventuation of the previous two.

Already the physical properties of blood are not mixed.  There is much understanding of this. Psychology is still in a relative infancy but much good is being achieved.

3.  The astral or desire body (sometimes called the emotional body) is the effect of the interplay of desire and of sentient response upon the self at the center, and the resultant effect - in that body - is experienced as emotion and as pain and pleasure and the other pairs of opposites. In these two bodies, the etheric and astral bodies, ninety percent of the causes of physical disease and troubles is to be found.

JC: 90% is a huge proportion to be found in the etheric and astral bodies. We can see that this is where the vast proportion of humanity is consciously focused.

4.  The mental body, or that much of the chitta or mind stuff which an individual human unit can use and impress, constitutes the fourth of the series of mechanisms at the disposal of the soul. At the same time let it not be forgotten that these four constitute one mechanism. Five percent of all modern disease originates in this body or state of consciousness, and here I wish to enunciate the truth that the constant reiteration by certain schools of healers that the mind is the cause of all sickness is not as yet a fact.

JC: 5 % correspondingly is very low and seems to reflect that most of humanity, at time of writing, was not mentally orientated. It is true today that there is a greater proportion now mentally orientated or at least making this transference, hence the growth in the study in psychology and awareness of psychological diseases.

A million years hence, when the focus of human attention has shifted from the emotional nature to the mind, and when men are essentially mental as today they are essentially emotional, then the causes of disease must be sought in the mind realm. They are today to be found (except in a few rare cases) in lack of vitality or in too much stimulation, and in the realm of feeling, of desires (thwarted or over-indulged) and in the moods, suppressions, or expressions of the deep seated [4] longings, irritations, secret delights and the many hidden impulses which emanate from the desire life of the subject.

JC: DK gives us a time frame of a million years for the transference of consciousness from the emotional body to the mental. This is a huge span of time for us to consider. We may wonder at the advances in psychological healing study and technique over that long time.

PolarisProject Group Study: Esoteric Healing. Study letter 2.

Esoteric Healing - Introductory Remarks              I shall endeavor first of all to touch upon the causes of disease, for the occult student must ever begin in the world of origins and not in the world of effects.   In the second place, I shall elaborate the seven methods of healing which govern the "work of restitution" (as it is called in the occult terminology) as practiced by the initiates of the world. These determine the techniques which must be employed. You will note that these methods and techniques are conditioned by the rays (of which I have written elsewhere: A Treatise on the Seven Rays, Vol. I and II.) and that therefore the healer has to take into [5] consideration not only his own ray but also the ray of the patient. There are therefore seven ray techniques, and these require elucidation before they can be applied intelligently.

JC: Students of the wisdom ever start with “the world of origins” and never place initial emphasis on the “world of effects”.  The world of effects is of course the world of karmic effects and of illusion and glamour. Therefore we are dealing with the world of causes and the “cyclic return of matter”.  Determining techniques lay in the “work of restitution” which is “governed by the seven method of healing under the conditioning of the seven rays. All healing governs the work of “restitution”.   In the third place, I shall lay emphasis upon psychological healing and upon the need to deal with the patient in his inner life, for the basic law underlying all occult healing may be stated to be as follows:

Law I  All disease is the result of inhibited soul life, and that is true of all forms in all kingdoms. The art of the healer consists in releasing the soul, so that its life can flow through the aggregate of organisms which constitute any particular form.

JC: This seems to be a fundamental statement, that “all disease” is the result of inhibition of the soul inflow.

It is interesting to note that the attempt of the scientist to release the energy of the atom is of the same general nature as the work of the esotericist when he endeavors to release the energy of the soul. In this release the nature of the true art of healing is hidden. Herein lies an occult hint.

JC: Esoteric healing deals in the release of the energy of the soul life into and through the lower bodies. It seems that we might try to take the hint of the Tibetan that this is the “true art” of healing. This seems to imply that all other methods of healing are not “true” or accurate by their nature. The analogy with science will be of great interest to us for DK uses this on occasion.

In the fourth place, we will consider the physical body, its diseases and ills, but only after we have studied that part of man which lies behind and surrounding the dense physical body. In that way we shall work from the world of inner causes to the world of outer happenings. We shall see that all that concerns the health of man originates from:

1.  The sumtotal of forces, feelings, desires and occasional mental processes which characterizes the three subtler bodies and determines the life and experience of the physical body.

JC:  There are only “occasional” mental processes in the average human mental body; therefore it does not bring much weight to the overwhelming force of the emotional or astral body. The life and force governing the physical body is the emotional nature and this is evident even today. Man is essentially kamas/manasis with the kamas being dominant.

2.  The effect upon the physical body of the condition of humanity as a whole. A human being is an integral part of humanity, an organism in a greater organism. Conditions existing in the whole will be reflected in [6] the unit self, and many of the ills from which man suffers today are the effect upon him of conditions existing in the fourth kingdom in nature as a whole. For these he is not held responsible. 3.  The effect upon his physical body of the planetary life, which is the expression of the life of the planetary Logos, Who is an evolving Entity. The implications of this are largely beyond our ken, but the effects are discernible.

JC: We are shown that the effects upon the human body come from influences of humanity as a whole and the planetary body or life. Regarding the planetary body of our logos, even if small we are told it is “discernable”. From all these individual man is not responsible, for average man is only responsible for himself or at least his own karma in as much as he and his immediate group are entwined. Correspondingly, man is not responsible for planetary karmic disease, but may be subject to it.

I am not interested primarily in training individuals in order to make them more efficient healers. It is group healing at which I aim, and it is the work which is done in formation which interests me at this time. But no group of people can work as a unit unless they love and serve each other. The healing energy of the spiritual Hierarchy cannot flow through the group if there is disharmony and criticism. The first work, therefore, of any group of healers, is to establish themselves in love and to work towards group unity and understanding.

JC: DK stresses that the training of individual healers is not of primary interest to him. He is concerned with group healing. “Disharmony and criticism” work against primary interest in hierarchial work and in healing.

I shall have to endeavor to put much truth [7] and information into a brief space, so as to make each sentence convey some real idea and give some real light on the problems which confront a healing group. That which I have to say will fall into two parts:   * First, we will deal with the general work of healing and teaching, and this will involve the impartation by me of laws, of techniques and methods. * Secondly, we will consider the healer and how he can perfect himself in the art of healing.   Is it not true that the prime requisite of all healers is a sympathetic rapport with the patient, so that the healer achieves insight into the trouble and establishes the confidence of the patient?

JC: Without a sympathetic rapport or compassion with a patient there can be no understanding of the patients concerns, troubles or social and cultural background. “Insight” into the needs and conditioning factors of the patient has to be established before any level of confidence is built. Without confidence on the part of the patient it seems, there can be no healing. This is a “prime requisite”. No group formative can heal or facilitate unless they “love and serve each other”. This a fundamental law!   T

he healer must understand also how to radiate, for the radiation of the soul will stimulate to activity the soul of the one to be healed and the healing process will be set in motion; the radiation of his mind will illumine the other mind and polarize the will of the patient; the radiation of his astral body, controlled and selfless, will impose a rhythm upon the agitation of the patient's astral body, and so enable the patient to take right action, whilst the radiation of the vital body, working through the splenic center, will aid in [8] organizing the patient's force-body and so facilitate the work of healing.

JC: Magnetic work and radiation are basic methods that need be known to the healer and the esotericist. One must attract soul energy and those that may benefit from this work. This will apply to all areas of esoteric teaching. Consequent radiation, a most occult and scientific word, will “set in motion” the healing work between the two persons. Interestingly we have:

  1. Radiation of the mind, polarizing the will of the patient. Here we see a focused reciprocation with the healers mind being negative to the positive polarity of the healers mind. The will of the patient needs to be strengthened and recipient to the will of the soul of the healer.

  2. Radiation of the astral body, this involves working with the agitated or upset condition [dis- harmony] of the patient’s emotional nature with a subsequent “rhythm” being “imposed”. This results in the patient taking “right action”, which might involve firstly the reception of soul force from the healer for without emotional acceptance no such healing can take place. Nor should it. Rhythm or coordinated action has to be established in the most potent body, the emotional.

  3. Thirdly, radiation is discussed of the body of vitality, the etheric vehicle. Etheric force or prana manifests via the Spleen and so vitalises the entire physical organism. For healing work the patients force body, the vital body, needs to be organised or rightly strung, at least to make any significant contribution to the distribution of the healing soul inflow. If the web is to slack or taught than handling and distribution of energy will be less facilitated or cause further problems due to congestion and inhibition of soul force.

The spleen is consequently a very delicate organ, but the physical spleen is only a cover for the real spleen. SD3 593.   The spleen is an organ located in the abdomen, where it functions in the destruction of old red blood cells and holding a reservoir of blood. It is regarded as one of the centers of activity of the reticuloendothelial system (part of the immune system). Until recently, the purpose of the spleen was not known. It is increasingly recognized that its absence leads to a predisposition to certain infections.   Other functions of the spleen are less prominent, especially in the healthy adult:

Production of opsonins, properdin, and tuftsin. Creation of red blood cells. While the bone marrow is the primary site of hematopoeisis in the adult, up until the fifth month of gestation, the spleen has important hematopoietic functions. After birth, no significant hematopoietic function is left in the spleen except in some hematologic disorders: e.g. myelodysplastic syndrome, hemoglobinopathies. Storage of red blood cells and other formed elements. This is only valid for certain mammals, such as dogs and horses. In horses roughly 50% of the red blood cells are stored there. The red blood cells can be released when needed. In humans, however, the spleen does not function as a deposit of red blood cells, but instead it stores platelets in case of an emergency. These animals also have large hearts in relation to their body size to accommodate the higher-viscosity blood that results. Some athletes have tried doping themselves with their own stored red blood cells to try to achieve the same effect, but the human heart is not equipped to handle the higher-viscosity blood. wikipedia.

Therefore, the healer has the duty of rendering himself effective, and according to what he is, so will be the effect upon the patient. When a healer works magnetically and radiates his soul force to the patient, that patient is enabled more easily to achieve the end desired - which may be complete healing, or it may be the establishing of a state of mind which will enable the patient to live with himself and with his complaint, unhandicapped by the karmic limitations of the body. Or it may be enabling the patient to achieve (with joy and facility) the right liberation from the body and, through the portal of death, to pass to complete health. [9]                     Esoteric Healing - The Basic Causes of Disease     Part One   The Basic Causes of Disease   This is the problem with which all medical practice down the ages has wrestled. In our present mechanistic age we have wandered far to the surface of things and away from the partially true point of view of earlier centuries which traced disease back of the "evil humors" bred and festering in the inner subjective life of the patient. In the evolution of knowledge on every hand we are now on the surface of things (note I do not use the word "superficial"), and the hour has struck in which knowledge can again re-enter the realm of the subjective and transmute itself into wisdom. There is today a dawning recognition on the part of the best minds in the medical and allied professions, that in the subjective and hidden attitudes of the mind and of the emotional nature, and in the life of inhibited or excessive sex expression, must be sought the causes of all disease.

JC: DK purposely emphasises the fact of great advances in modern medicine and indeed surgery, due to “mechanistic age” and “the evolution of knowledge”. The nineteenth and twentieth centuries were then ones of great strides and advancement in the progress of knowledge and of mental evolution. He particularly notes that they brought us to the surface of things noting that this does not indicate superficiality at all. The techniques and understandings of previous centuries were only partially true with the “evil humours” or four humours being an initial grasp and forerunner of the subjective world in modern psychology. The Tibetan clearly informs that the “hour has struck” for knowledge to re enter the subjective world with transmutation into wisdom being assured. In “attitudes of mind”, the emotional nature and inhibition or over stimulation of the sex ‘drive’ lie the causes of disease.

Four Temperaments is a theory of psychology that stems from the ancient concept of four humors (humorism). It is considered debunked and obsolete by contemporary professionals. Temperament theory has its roots in the ancient four humors theory of the Greek doctor Hippocrates (460-370 BC), who believed certain human behaviors were caused by body fluids (called "humors"): blood, yellow bile, black bile, and phlegm. Next, Galen (131-200) developed the first typology of temperament in his dissertation De temperamentis, and searched for physiological reasons for different behaviors in humans. Nicholas Culpeper (1616-1654) was the first to disregard the idea of fluids as defining human behavior, and Immanuel Kant (1724-1804), Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925), Alfred Adler (1879-1937), Erich Adickes (1866-1925), Eduard Spränger (1914), Ernst Kretschmer (1920), and Erich Fromm (1947) all theorized on the four temperaments (with different names) and greatly shaped our modern theories of temperament. Hans Eysenck (1916-1997) was one of the first psychologists to analyze personality differences using a psycho-statistical method (factor analysis), and his research led him to believe that temperament is biologically based. From the beginning of our studies, I would like to point out that the ultimate cause of disease, even if known to me, would fail to be comprehended by you. The cause lies back in the history of the distant past of our planet, in the career (occultly understood) of the planetary Life, and that it has its roots in what is largely designated "cosmic evil." This is a perfectly meaningless phrase, but one that is symbolically descriptive of a condition in consciousness which is that of [10] certain of the "imperfect Gods." Given the initial premise that Deity itself is working towards a perfection past our comprehension, it may be inferred that there may exist for the Gods Themselves and for God (as the Life of the solar system), certain limitations and certain areas or states of consciousness which still await mastering.

JC: If we understand disease to be dis-harmony and that all disease originates from the “cosmic evil” we seem to be being told that ultimately disease is due to the workings and influences originating from the lodge of darkness or disintegration. The dark lodge does work with “inhibited soul life”. Therefore the soul is the principle governing the methods and technique of healing of the white lodge. We might take account of DK when he states that the release of the energy of the atom is also known as "transmutation" and through release of the life speeds the evolution of the life of the atom. Healing, in effect is also a speeding of the evolution of the life within the human atom or man/woman. Harmony overcomes disharmony and soul life is re aligned and adjusted to the benefit of the individual progress.

These limitations and relative imperfections may cause definite effects in Their bodies of manifestation - the various planets as expressions of Lives, and the solar system as the expression of a Life. Given also the hypothesis that these outer bodies of divinity, the planets, are the forms through which certain Deities express Themselves, it may be a true and logical deduction that all lives and forms within those bodies may be necessarily subject also to these limitations, and to the imperfections growing out of these unconquered areas of consciousness and these states of awareness, hitherto unrealized by the Deities, incarnated in planetary and solar form. Given the postulate that every form is a part of a still greater form, and that we do indeed "live and move and have our being" within the body of God (as St. Paul expresses it) we, as integral parts of the fourth kingdom in nature, share in this general limitation and imperfection…

Esoteric Healing - The Basic Causes of Disease     1.  All disease (and this is a platitude) is caused by lack of harmony - a disharmony to be found existing between the form aspect and the life. That which brings together form and life, or rather, that which is the result of this intended union, we call the soul, the self where humanity is concerned, and the integrating principle where the subhuman kingdoms are concerned. Disease appears where there is a lack of alignment between these various factors, the soul and the form, the life and its expression, the subjective and the objective realities. Consequently, spirit and matter are not freely related to each other. This is one mode of interpreting Law I, and the entire thesis is intended to be an exposition of that Law.

2.  This lack of harmony, producing what we call disease, runs through all the four kingdoms in nature, and causes those conditions which produce pain (where the sentiency is exquisite and developed) and everywhere congestion, corruption and death. Ponder on these words: Inharmony, Disease, Pain, Congestion, Corruption, Death, for they are descriptive of the general condition governing the conscious life of all forms, macrocosmic and microcosmic. They are not causes.

JC: The above is a “general condition” which seems to directly apply to the state of consciousness or awareness of “all” forms planetary and cosmically. This tells us that there are conscious entities far in advance of us which still battle with this “general condition” of psychic dis-harmony relative to them. As a group we might note that all incarnating states of consciousness are subject to this condition as it is a governing factor.

3.  All these conditions, however, can be regarded as purificatory in their effects, and must be so regarded by humanity if the right attitude towards disease is to be assumed.

JC: However, all these conditions are purificatory or cleansing in effect or result in the forward march of redemption of the form and the evolution of the lesser lives of the form and the informing life or indwelling consciousness. The human kingdom is governed by the 4th ray of harmony through conflict and it is clear that through dis-harmony, struggle, pain, corruption and death so is harmony, progress [preservation] and evolution achieved.

This is oft forgotten by the fanatical healer and by the radical exponent of an idea, finitely grasped and in most cases only part of a greater idea. [13] 4.  Methods of healing and techniques of alleviation are peculiar to humanity and are the result of man's mental activity. They indicate his latent power as a creator, and as one who progresses towards freedom. They indicate his discriminative ability to sense perfection, to vision the goal, and hence to work towards that ultimate liberation. His error at this time consists in: 5.  His inability to see the true uses of pain. 6.  His resentment at suffering. 7.  His misunderstanding of the law of non-resistance. 8.  His over-emphasis of the form nature.

9.  His attitude to death, and his feeling that the disappearance of the life out of visual perception through the medium of form, and the consequent disintegration of that form, indicates disaster.   * When human thought reverses the usual ideas as to disease, and accepts disease as a fact in nature, man will begin to work with the law of liberation, with right thought, leading to non-resistance.   JC: With this, The Tibetan tells us, humanity should acquire “right attitude” and the nature of disease be seen in its ‘true form’ and should work with disease in a non resistant fashion. Not all disease need or should be cured, with release being the next step ahead. It will be apparent how “non-resistance” will condition the thinking of humanity in the future and disease will not be seen with such fear and troublesome resistance. Thus the “law of liberation” will become understood. Man certainly has resentment at suffering and a great emphasis on the form nature. This is a great hindrance to realities and we might note a major victory of the black lodge. Pain and disintegration is often used against a victim to magnify fear.   …* From one angle, disease is a process of liberation, and the enemy of that which is static and crystallized. Think not, from what I say, that therefore disease should be welcomed, and that the process of death should be cherished. Were that the case, one would cultivate disease and put a premium on suicide. Fortunately for humanity, the whole tendency of life is against disease, and the reaction of the form life upon the thought of man fosters the fear of death. This has been rightly so, for the instinct of self-preservation and the preservation of form integrity is a vital principle in matter, and the tendency to self-perpetuation of the life within the form is one of our greatest God-given capacities and will persist.

JC:  The instinct to self preservation and integrity, cohesion and vitality of the human body is a “vital principle” inherent in the constitution of matter itself. The lesser devic builders work toward better condition and vitality of the form against great odds and karmic circumstances.   But in the human family this must eventually give place to the use of death as the organized, freeing process in order to conserve force and give to the soul a better instrument of manifestation. For this liberty of action, mankind as a whole is not yet ready. The disciples and aspirants of the world should now, however, begin to grasp these newer principles of existence. The instinct to self-preservation governs the relation of spirit and matter, of life and form as long as the Deity Himself wills to incarnate within His body of manifestation - a planet, or a solar system. I have in the above statement given to you a hint as to one of the basic causes of disease, and to the endless fight between the imprisoned spirit and the imprisoning form. This fight uses for its method that innate quality which expresses itself as the urge to preserve and the urge to perpetuate - both the present form and the species. EH 15.

PolarisProject Group Study: Esoteric Healing. Study letter 3. [15]

JC: DK gives us a magnificent hint as to the nature of the law of liberation. The life of any form will persist often with great struggle just so long as the informing life or entity continues and “wills to incarnate”. The moment that this Will is withdrawn or abstracted so then the form literally ‘loses the will to live’. It seems that this applies equally to a species as much as an individual form.   We are informed that Karma governs all disease…

“Disease exists. Forms in all kingdoms are full of inharmony and out of alignment with the indwelling life. Disease and corruption and the tendency towards dissolution are found everywhere. I am choosing my words with care. * Disease is not, therefore, the result of wrong human thought. It existed among the many forms of life long before the human family appeared on earth. If you seek verbal expression, and if you want to talk within the limits of the human mind, you can say with a measure of accuracy: God, [14] the planetary Deity, is guilty of wrong thinking. But you will not be expressing the truth, but only a tiny fraction of the cause, as it appears to your feeble finite mind, through the medium of the general world glamor and illusion.” EH 14.   * The law of cause and effect, called Karma in the East, governs all this. Karma must be regarded in reality as the effect (in the form life of our planet) of causes, deep seated and hidden in the mind of God. The causes that we may trace in relation to disease and death are in reality only the working out of certain basic principles which govern - rightly or wrongly, who shall say? - the life of God in form, and they must ever remain incomprehensible to man until such time as he takes the great initiation which is symbolized for us in the Transfiguration. All along in our studies, we shall be dealing with secondary causes and their effects, with the phenomenal results of those subjective effects which emanate from causes too far away for us to grasp. This should be admitted and grasped. This is the best man can do with his present mental apparatus. When the intuition rarely works, and the mind is seldom illumined, why should man arrogantly expect to understand everything? Let him work at the development of his intuition and at achieving illumination. Understanding may then come his way. He will have earned the right to divine knowledge. But the above recognition will suffice for our work and will enable us to lay down those laws and principles which will indicate the way humanity may gain release from the form consciousness and consequent immunity from the victory of death and those disease-dealing conditions which govern today our planetary manifestation.

JC: All this [disease] is governed by the law of cause and effect. We are told that all karmic effects are “deep seated” in the mind of God and work out in matter as the result of past causes. This amounts to the action of cyclic law, an aspect of the law of "Affinity" and the law of karma and magnetic attraction so closely related to the 2nd ray. DK gives us an example of this law in relation to "ancient relationship" between planets and constellations. We see that this law applies equally to an individual un-individualised atom, a man, a planet, solar logos, a constellation and so on, and how this relates to the form and therefore matter side of evolution. We might ponder the nature and application of purifacatory “solar fire” throughout our solar system. This is “esoteric healing” in macrocosmic proportions.

Esoteric Healing - The Basic Causes of Disease     We will divide our consideration of the causes of disease into three parts, eliminating from our quest for truth the quite understandable but equally futile desire to apprehend the mind of Deity. * The psychological causes. * Causes emanating from group life.

* Our karmic liabilities, the karmic causes. [16]   In all this we shall but gain a general idea (all that is now possible) as to the presence of disease in the human family, and of that to be found also, in part, in the animal kingdom. When this general idea is grasped, we shall have a clearer understanding of our problem and can then proceed with our consideration of the methods which will enable us to handle the undesirable effects with greater facility. Students of the Art of Healing should likewise remember that there are three ways in which healing can be brought about, and that all three ways have their place and value, dependent upon the point in evolution of the subject being healed.

JC: All that is “now possible” is a general idea of the presence of disease in the human and animal family. The palliative and ameliorating methods are “cure generally and “eliminate undesirable” conditions allowing building and strengthening of the physical body and enhancing the overall vitality thereby enabling for further or future disease to be “thrown off”.

First, there is the application of those palliatives and ameliorating methods which gradually cure disease and eliminate undesirable conditions; they build up the form life and foster the vitality, so that disease can be thrown off. Of these methods the allopathic and the homeopathic schools and the various osteopathic and chiropractic and other therapeutic schools are good exponents. They have done much good and constructive work, and the debt of humanity to the wisdom, skill and unselfish attentions of the physicians is great. They are dealing all the time with urgent conditions and dangerous effects of causes which are not apparent on the surface. Under these methods, the patient is in the hands of an outside party, and should be passive, quiescent and negative.

wikipedia. The term "palliative care" may be used generally to refer to any care that alleviates symptoms, even if there is hope of a cure by other means; thus, a recent WHO statement calls palliative care "an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problems associated with life-threatening illness." In some cases, palliative treatments may be used to alleviate the side effects of curative treatments, such as relieving the nausea associated with chemotherapy. The term "palliative care" is increasingly used with regard to diseases other than cancer, such as chronic, progressive pulmonary disorders, renal disease, chronic heart failure or progressive neurological conditions. In addition, the rapidly-growing field of pediatric palliative care has clearly shown the need for services geared specifically for children with serious illness.   Though the concept of palliative care is not new, most physicians have traditionally concentrated on aggressively trying to cure patients. Available treatments for alleviation of symptoms were viewed as hazardous and seen as inviting addiction and other unwanted side effects. Over the past twenty years, the focus on a patient's quality of life has gained substantial ground. Today in the United States, 55% of U.S. hospitals with over 100 beds offer a palliative care program and nearly one-fifth of community hospitals have palliative care programs. A relatively recent development is the concept of a dedicated health care team that is entirely geared toward palliative treatment, called a palliative care team. wikipedia.   Chiropractic is a complementary and alternative health care profession with the purpose of diagnosing and treating mechanical disorders of the spine and musculoskeletal system with the intention of affecting the nervous system and improving health. It is based on the premise that a spinal joint dysfunction can interfere with the nervous system and result in many different conditions of diminished health. Some chiropractors still use the term vertebral subluxation to describe what they treat. Chiropractic was founded in 1895 by D. D. Palmer, and it is now practiced in more than 100 countries. Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine, or D.O.s, are trained to apply the philosophy of treating the whole person (a holistic approach) to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, disease and injury using conventional medical practice such as drugs and surgery, along with manual therapy (Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine or OMM). As with Doctors of Medicine (M.D.s), D.O.s educated in the United States are fully licensed physicians and surgeons who practice the full scope of medicine. Currently, there are 27 accredited osteopathic medical schools in the United States and 125 accredited U.S. allopathic medical schools. Osteopathic medical physicians also have the opportunity to pursue allopathic residency programs, however, the converse is not currently permitted. Within the U.S., osteopathic medical physicians practice in all medical specialties including, but not limited to, internal medicine, emergency medicine, dermatology, surgery, and radiology. wikipedia.

JC: The osteopathic, chiropractic and therapeutic schools are very effective along with the allopathic and the homeopathic practices. This DK makes very clear as the debt humanity owes to their wisdom and care is great. This is a clear endorsement and one where the patient should be “passive, quiescent and negative.”

Secondly, there is the appearance of the work and methods of the modern psychologist, who seeks to deal with subjective conditions and to straighten out those wrong attitudes of mind, those inhibitions, psychoses and complexes which bring about the outer states of disease, the morbid conditions and neurotic and mental disasters. Under this method, the patient is taught to cooperate as much as he can with the psychologist, so that he may arrive at a proper [17] understanding of himself, and so learn to eradicate those inner compelling situations which are responsible for the outer results. He is trained to be positive and active, and this is a great step in the right direction. The tendency to combine psychology with the outer physical treatment is sound and right.

JC: Modern psychology has emerged and deals with those inner conditions of the psych so commonly known today. This should be combined with the “outer physical treatment” of the patient and is “sound and right”. We will recall that the average GP is a naturally gifted psychologist and is a good example of how the blending of some treatments work.

Thirdly, the highest and the newest method is that of calling into positive activity a man's own soul. The true and the future healing is brought about when the life of the soul can flow without any impediment and hindrance throughout every aspect of the form nature. It can then vitalize it with its potency, and can also eliminate those congestions and obstructions which are such a fruitful source of disease.

JC: The newest method is one of the calling in of the soul into “positive activity” regarding the patient. This the healer and white magician does by empathy and tuning into the soul of the patient or person. The recognition of the higher value and goodwill will empower by recognition of the patient to that which is good and beneficent thereby allowing for the free flow of energy in as much as may be possible. There then is set up a rapport on higher levels and the recognition of the patient makes for much facilitated work.

This gives you much to ponder upon. If we go slowly as regards the practical application of techniques and methods, it is because I seek to lay a sound foundation for that which I shall later impart.    The Training of the Healer   As regards the training of the healer, I will give from time to time the six rules which govern (or should govern) his activity. Bear in mind the two words which I earlier gave. They sum up the healer's story: Magnetism and Radiation. They are different in their effects as we shall later see.

JC: Magnetism and Radiation sum up the effective work of the esoteric healer.

Rule one The healer must seek to link his soul, his heart, his brain and his hands. Thus can he pour the vital healing force upon the patient. This is magnetic work. It cures disease, or may increase the so-called evil state, according to the knowledge of the healer.

The healer must seek to link his soul, his brain, his heart and auric emanation. Thus can his presence feed the [18] soul life of the patient. This is the work of radiation. The hands are needed not. The soul displays its power. The patient's soul responds through the response of his aura to the radiation of the healer's aura, flooded with soul energy.   JC: Via magnetic work does the healer link with his soul and draw forth or call upon his soul energy to give as radiation via his or her aura being the etheric body and distributor of vital energy. In this case the healer not only reflects soul energy via his “golden bowl” or etheric mechanism, but radiates or in a sense reflects upon the “golden bowl” the vital body of the patient. We might reflect for a moment that this is the polar opposite to vampirism. Vampirism is the method used to deplete the vital mechanism of the victim and enhance the vital condition [always degrading] of the perpetrator.

In considering the Causes of Disease, I find it necessary to speak a word in connection with conditions - external and internal. It will be apparent to the casual thinker that many diseases and many causes of death are due to environing conditions for which he is in no way responsible. These range all the way from purely external occurrences to hereditary predispositions. They might be listed as follows:

1.  Accidents, which may be due to personal negligence, group happenings, the carelessness of other people, and the results of fighting, as in labor strikes or war. They can also be brought about by attacks from the animal or the snake world, accidental poisonings and many other causes.   JC: We must remember that not all accidents are accidental and due to the victim. Some so called accidents are perpetrated by the brothers of the shadows. They well know also, how to use the animal, nocuous poisonings and disease. This also by Virus and Bacillus.    2.  Infections coming to a man from outside and not as the result of his own peculiar blood condition. Such infections are the various so-called infectious and contagious diseases, and prevalent epidemics. These may come to a man in the line of duty, through his daily contacts, or through a widespread condition of disease in his environment.   JC: We can see how contagious disease may well come due to his service and “line of duty”and daily contacts. Also, some persons frequently carry virus and bacillus and are known in medicine as “carriers” of some type. They merely carry or are used to carry disease to the populace. We can see that modern medicine does not yet recognise that cancer can “be imparted by contact”, although it recognises that vaccination against the Papilloma virus is associated with and found to cause cancer of some types.

3.  Diseases due to malnutrition, particularly when found in the young. This state of undernourishment predisposes the body to disease, lowers the resistance and the vitality, and offsets the "fighting powers" of the man, leading to premature death.   JC:  Although DK rightly states that malnutrition is not the fault of the individual but due to environment with all that this might entail, today we recognise a type of self induces malnourishment known as anorexia and bulimia. This we might consider is due to the emotional/psychological condition [kamas/manasic] of this peculiar and perhaps relatively modern illness.   4.  Heredity. There are, as you well know, certain forms of hereditary weaknesses, which either predispose a person to certain illnesses and consequent death, or produce in him those conditions which lead to a steady weakening [19] of his hold on life; there are also those tendencies which constitute a form of dangerous appetite, which lead to undesirable habits, a letting down of the morale, and are dangerous to the will of the person, rendering him futile to fight these predispositions. He succumbs to them and pays the price of such habits, which is disease and death.

JC: DK informs us of “tendencies” which form and embody “dangerous appetite”. In speaking of heredity dispositions and disease we might infer that in many cases part of the heredity tendencies are of wrong habit due to inherent “weaknesses” leading to illness.  He could be referring again to an un-wholesome habit of persistent sexual satisfaction. This is widespread in today’s society [a reflection of the past] and we are very well aware of the consequences that come to those who so indulge. There are also carriers of varied infections in this category. We might well note that DK here remarks that this results in the “letting down of the moral” which is “dangerous to the will” of the person. It seems that by today’s standards this is almost what might be termed an ‘old fashioned saying”. However, we know that this “renders” one “futile” to fight against inevitable disease and death. Such habits and desires would familiarise the person to the lower earthly plane and astral desires with consequent materialistic binding to spheres of evil inclination.

These four types of disease and causes of death account for much that we see happening around us in people's lives, but they are not to be classed definitely under any of the psychological causes of disease, and will only be considered, and that very briefly, under the section dealing with group life and its predisposing causes of disease. Infectious diseases are there dealt with, but such situations as arise out of an automobile or railroad accident, for instance, are not to be considered as coming under the heading of causes producing disease. That the work of the healer may be involved in these cases is quite true, but the work to be done is somewhat different to that accomplished when dealing with those diseases which have their roots in some subtle body or other, or in the results of group disease, etc. The ills growing out of malnutrition and the wrong feeding of our modern life and civilization will not here be considered. For these no child is individually responsible. I am concerned with the diseases arising in wrong internal conditions.

The responsibility of a child for his living conditions is practically nil, unless you admit karma as a predisposing factor, and its power to produce those readjustments which emerge out of the past and affect the present. I shall deal with this more fully under our third point, dealing with our karmic liabilities. I would only suggest here that the whole subject of disease could be treated from the angle of karma and be definite and conclusive in its value had there been right teaching on this abstruse subject from the time that it was given out in the West.

But the truth as it has come to us from the East has been as much distorted by the Eastern theologian as the doctrines of the At-one-ment and of the Virgin Birth have been misinterpreted and taught by the Western theologian. The real truth bears little resemblance to our modern formulations. I am, therefore, seriously handicapped when dealing with the subject of disease from the angle of karma.

JC: DK is “seriously handicapped” due to wrong emphasis and teaching on many things including Karma and disease. This gives us a sense of true proportion.

It is difficult for me to convey to you anything of the truth, as it really exists, owing to the preconceived ideas as to the ancient Law of Cause and Effect which are necessarily in your mind. When I say to you that the doctrine of Emergent Evolution and the modern theories of the work of a catalyst upon two substances which - when brought into relation with each other under the effect of the catalyst produce a third and different substance - carry in them much of the truth anent karma, will you understand? I question it.     When I say to you that the emphasis given to the Law of Karma as it explains apparent injustices and stresses always the appearance of pain, disease, and suffering gives only a partial presentation of the basic cosmic truth, is your mind in any way clarified? When I point out that the Law of Karma, rightly understood and rightly wielded, can bring that which produces happiness, good, and freedom from pain more easily than it brings pain, with its chain of consequences, do you feel able to grasp the significance of what I am saying?

JC: Karma may also be good karma and suffering is only a partial explanation, with the “rightly understood” wielding of humanities circumstance and actions may also bring goodness and freedom from all types of pain, and this more easily so. In this we should consider that the “cyclic return of substance” is therefore squared by the good or beneficent actions being returned greatly multiplied. We recall again that all disease is the result of causes and condition emanating from the mind of God and that it is a “platitude” statement of DK when he presents us with the universal proclamation that Karma “governs all this”.

Esoteric Healing - The Basic Causes of Disease  Law I.

“All disease (and this is a platitude) is caused by lack of harmony - a disharmony to be found existing between the form aspect and the life. EH 12.”

“The law of cause and effect, called Karma in the East, governs all this. Karma must be regarded in reality as the effect (in the form life of our planet) of causes, deep seated and hidden in the mind of God. EH 15.”

“It is difficult for me to convey to you anything of the truth, as it really exists, owing to the preconceived ideas as to the ancient Law of Cause and Effect which are necessarily in your mind. When I say to you that the doctrine of Emergent Evolution and the modern theories of the work of a catalyst upon two substances which - when brought into relation with each other under the effect of the catalyst produce a third and different substance - carry in them much of the truth anent karma, will you understand? I question it.” EH 20.

JC: DK explains that karma or cause and effect are the result of the action of some movement or person with another movement or person resulting in a karmic reaction due to the degree of kamas/manasic force used in the action. This produces as a result a third and altered state of substance when out of harmony, which results in dis-harmony of conditions and disease. All cyclic return of substance or motion/matter brings an altered reaction or manifestation of karmic force. In a Newtonian sense this is the "equal and opposite reaction". The outgoing and cyclic return of cause set in motion upon matter and its gravitational effect according to its degree of force over a period of time or number of lives manifest as some form of circumstance or activity or counter condition known as disease or disharmony of a mental, emotional and very likely physical manifestation.

We are speaking here of the force of some action or thought that alters the material and atomic substance of the physical, astral atoms and cells of the body. This draws attention as to how the atoms of two bodies/persons or forms when "brought in relation" by a catalyst or common force such as "desire and will" then will that force or catalyst produce an "effect" which alters the atomic structure of the atoms of the two bodies producing an atomic relationship which amounts to a "third and different substance" with an affinity of a beneficial or detrimental nature and which must be worked out under karmic law, the “action of Cyclic Law and circulatory motion of mass”. It seems that this is a clear and concise chemical descriptive that may be further reduced to a scientific formulation on the basis of the “Universal [mind] constant of Karma”. K = Universal [mind] constant of Karma.  Km = mdlc2. All disease [a platitude] is caused by a lack of harmony   Is the product of a catalyst upon two substances which when brought into relationship with each other under the effect of the catalyst, produce a third and altered state of substance   Karma governs all this.   All Disease [lack of harmony] equals [catalysed third substance] related or multiplied by Desire and Will [catalyst motion and direction] and karmic duration squared.

Degree of Motive Power = Desire d

Degree of Direction = Will w    producing disease, D.

D = catalysed third substance = 3s

= K "dimension of the circle of operation" of cyclic/spiral Law.

d = 3smdlc2   18/06/2007.   The world of glamor is at this time so strong and the sense of illusion so potent and vital that we fail to see these basic laws in their true significance.

JC: We are confronted with a vitally strong world of glamour and illusion and it is these which induce our true understanding of realities. Such is the potency of these that we "fail" to see the "basic laws" in any "true significance" to a great degree. Again, DK is very matter of fact and even what may be termed `politically incorrect' which might shine a light on some of today's current understandings and views.   Often the underlying sense of values and conditioning reasons for things are counter to the sometimes to tolerant or all inclusive acceptance of indulgences, appetites, weaknesses and the general lowering of standards of decency and moral values and respectfulness so endemic in society and so hard to communicate their consequences, but which in reality amounts to a "letting down of the moral" and is in fact most "dangerous to the will" of the individual or group as perfectly described by DK. The danger is that to low an acceptable standard of practical living and over tolerance of vices, unwholesome practices, criminality and general "dumming down" will result in the down ward arc of morality and values leading to that which is "dangerous" to the "will" and is therefore counter productive to the well being and holistic integrity of the individual health rendering one eventually “futile” to disease of some kind either psychological or physical.   …The world illusion and glamor, which prevents the average and ignorant man from seeing life as it truly is. Even the advanced man and the disciples are only beginning to get a fleeting and inadequate glance at a glorious reality.

JC: There is a glorious reality before us and it is pointed out that there is far more good karma than bad even in such a chaotic world and with so much apparent dis-ease as is evident considering disease to account for all physical, emotional and the few but increasing truly mental problems to be found today. There is much hope!   4.  Uncontrolled minds and unreleased and unawakened brain cells also hinder man from correct realization. This fact is often unrecognized. The apparatus of realization is as yet inadequate. This point needs emphasizing.

JC: We will endeavour to control our minds and awaken our brain cells hoping to make our realization a more adequate apparatus to the task.   5.  National and racial temperaments, with their predisposing temperaments, and prejudices. These factors again prevent a just appreciation of these realities.   I have given enough here to indicate to you the stupidity of attempting to state that you understand these laws towards which you are groping and which you seek to understand. Nowhere in human thought is the darkness greater than in connection with the laws concerning disease and death.   JC: DK can be ever blunt and straight speaking, but it is his lighted wisdom as a Master which shines a light on realities. We will not be so stupid as to state that we fully understand any of the laws with which we are presented with in this treatise, and even though the human mind is the darkest in connection with the laws of disease and death, we will attempt to grasp a fuller appreciation of its fundamentals.

It is necessary, therefore, to realize that, from the start, in all I have to say, under the heading The Psychological Causes of Disease, I am not dealing with those complaints or predispositions to disease which emerge out of the environment, or with those definitely physical taints which are inherited from parents who have carried in their bodies and transmitted to their children disease germs which they, in their turn, may have inherited from their parents. I would like to point out that these inherited diseases are far fewer than is at present surmised; of these, the predisposition to tuberculosis, to syphilis and to cancer are the most important where our present humanity is concerned; they are inherited and also can be imparted by contact. These I will deal with under our second major heading on the diseases emanating from the group.  EH 24.

JC: DK makes the enormous statement that Cancer, TB and Syphilis [STD’s] are inherited and can be imparted by contact.

“Today, owing to the vast reaches of time involved and to the untold generations of those who have died upon the earth, the "germs" (so-called by the unlearned thinker) of the dread complaint of cancer are to be found in the very soil on which we live, infecting the vegetable kingdom and also the human family.” EH 59.

JC: We are however here dealing with “the psychological causes of disease” in the main and not with physical “taints” which are inherited. However, the clarification has been made that the predisposition to TB, STDs and Cancer are indeed inherited and that Cancer is also transmittable as suggested by DK, and can “be imparted by contact”. I am going to make the observation that people seem to, in many cases try to avoid touching cancer patients. This has been an area of dispute over time and I posit that it is in the human racial psych; such is the great fear or the extent of this disease from ancient times. Indeed, it is inherent in the very soil of the earth as DK tells us. The process of transmission of cancer seems to be the cancer cells via the bloodstream [virus] and I would then think via semen and bodily fluid however an infected skin cell may also facilitate such transmission if the very soil of the earth holds it potent. TB and STD’s are bacterial.   By guarding against human papilloma virus, it could save thousands of lives and may end the need for smears tests. Trials have shown a jab can offer 100% protection against strains of HPV linked to about 70% of cervical cancers. Some forms of the HPV virus only cause genital warts, but others cause cervical cancer. It is estimated up to half of the young women in Britain have been infected with a high-risk strain of HPV by the time they are 30. 'High risk' HPV types, strains 16, 18 and 31 and 33, have been found to be present in close to 100% of all cervical cancers, according to the NHS Cancer Screening Programmes. bbc.   Wikipedia.

Cancer is a disease characterized by disorderly division of cells, combined with the malignant behavior of these cells. Malignant cancer cells tend to spread, either by direct growth into adjacent tissue through invasion, or by implantation into distant sites by metastasis (the process whereby cancer cells can move through the bloodstream or lymphatic system to distant locations). Cancer may affect people at all ages, but risk tends to increase with age. It is one of the principal causes of death in developed countries.

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease (STD), caused by spiral-shaped spirochete bacterium, Treponema pallidum. The disease has been known under many names during history, including the "French disease" and the "Great Pox". Syphilis has had a prominent role in history and literature for the last several hundred years.   The route of transmission of syphilis is almost always by sexual contact. However, there are examples of congenital syphilis via transmission from mother to child in utero. The signs and symptoms of syphilis are numerous; before the advent of serological testing, precise diagnosis was very difficult. In fact, the disease was dubbed the "Great Imitator" because it was often confused with other diseases.

Tuberculosis (abbreviated as TB for Tubercle Bacillus. ) is a common and deadly infectious disease that is caused by mycobacteria, primarily Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Tuberculosis most commonly affects the lungs (as pulmonary TB) but can also affect the central nervous system, the lymphatic system, the circulatory system, the genitourinary system, bones, joints and even the skin. Other mycobacteria such as Mycobacterium bovis, Mycobacterium africanum, Mycobacterium canetti, and Mycobacterium microti can also cause tuberculosis, but these species do not usually infect healthy adults.   Over one-third of the world's population now has the TB bacterium in their bodies and new infections are occurring at a rate of one per second.[2] Not everyone who is infected develops the disease and asymptomatic latent TB infection is most common. However, one in ten latent infections will progress to active TB disease which, if left untreated, kills more than half of its victims. In 2004, 14.6 million people had active TB and there were 8.9 million new cases and 1.7 million deaths, mostly in developing countries.[2] In addition, a rising number of people in the developed world are contracting tuberculosis because their immune systems are compromised by immunosuppressive drugs, substance abuse or HIV/AIDS.     PolarisProject Group Study: Esoteric Healing. Study letter 4.   CHAPTER I

The Psychological Causes of Disease

The point I would like to make here, before proceeding further, is that I shall seek to avoid, as far as possible, all technicalities. Our theme is the esoteric consideration of disease and its forms; it seeks to elucidate the subject of and the vital causes of such diseases, and to indicate the general laws with which the healer must work and the six rules which he must impose upon himself - and to which he gives obedience, through discipline and understanding.

JC: Here is an important distinction made by DK. He will avoid as far as possible all technicalities. It is the esoteric causes of disease with which we are dealing with an elucidation of the vital causes of disease and addresses from the point of view of cause rather than the complex analysis of  its effect on the form. It seems that the subject is being approached from a point of simplicity rather than complexity. This is ever the way of approach of the Initiate. If further information on description and outer effects are required we are encouraged to search this out for ourselves if need be. The healer will give “obedience, through discipline and understanding” noting that these general laws and the six rules are self “imposed”.   You will have noted that I listed the psychological causes under four headings:

  1. Those arising out of the emotional-feeling nature.

  2. Those which have their origin in the etheric body.

  3. Those which are based on wrong thought.

  4. The peculiar complaints and psychological troubles of disciples.

It may have interested you to see that I place the ills of the etheric body in the second place and not the first. The reason for this is that the group ills and diseases which have fastened upon the race, work primarily through the etheric body and find their way out into manifestation via the etheric bodies of all forms. But I have placed them second, even though they are in the last analysis the most numerous, owing to the fact that humanity cannot as yet deal with [25] these en masse.

JC: It is not yet possible for humanity to deal with “group ills and diseases” concerning the “race” or human race. They are placed second under psychological causes “arising” from the emotional nature or astral body. These group ills manifest “out” via the etheric bodies of “all forms”. Perhaps also as so many of the human race are emotionally polarised this may be a reason for the emotional arising of psychological causes being placed first in DK’s list. There also seems to be the implication that humanity today are already dealing, in some fashion, with the mass ills arising from the emotional body.

The approach has to be through individuals, and men must clear their astral or emotional bodies of those conditions which predispose them to disease, as individuals. At present, the race is astrally polarized. The emotional sentient nature is all-powerful in the masses. This leads to a relatively negative etheric body which is tuned in on the entire etheric substance of the planet.

JC: We are clearly informed that at present the etheric body en masse is “relatively negative” and is “tuned in” on the etheric substance “of the planet”. This then relates humanity and their “group ills and diseases” being tuned in to the planetary etheric body in its entirety. The approach must by necessity be via the individual as at present we cannot deal with disease in a group curative way. It is obvious that humanity is not yet conscious of such a vast group problem. It is very clear then that humanity is then conscious of individual disease, diagnosis, and treatment. However, we need to “clear” the emotional body of “those conditions” which predispose men and women to illness. We can see this in tentative practice today in modern psychology.

Curiously, we see that the powerful emotional body renders the vital body “relatively negative” and we might well relate this with the use of palliative and amelioration methods which “build up the form and foster the vitality” of the individual making it increasingly likely that disease will be “thrown off”. So in fact although DK informs us that it is not yet possible to deal with “group ills and disease” “en masse” via the etheric body we can see a tentative dealing on an individual basis with the physical/etheric constitution as they “foster the vitality” through palliative methods of the varied schools so mentioned, osteopathic, homeopathic, physiotherapy ect. This, well before the emergence of modern psychology. These methods build the vitality and render the vital body increasingly positive to the physical form, and in so doing places a relative steadying effect on the emotional self as conditions are eased. DK highly rates 19th and 20th century homeopathic methods in the western world and for this reson I include a brief look at the oriental contribution. Much of the classic and traditional Chinese medicinal therapies and treatments were developed along side training and practice in the martial arts. Modern physio, massage, homeopathic and herbal treatments derive from this relatively ancient source which was more likely than not of atlantean origin. The techniques and understandings of previous centuries were partially true with the “evil humours” or four humours being an initial grasp and forerunner of the subjective world in modern psychology. We can but recognise that the “four humours” mentioned by DK of the 16th and 17th centuries and of Hippocrates and Greco-Roman medicine are related to those of ancient Chinese medicine.   “Modern medicine, while it has gained largely in anatomy, physiology, and pathology, and even in therapeutics, has lost immensely by its narrowness of spirit, its rigid materialism, its sectarian dogmatism. One school in its pure blindness sternly ignores whatever is developed by other schools; and all unite in ignoring every grand conception of man or nature.   The explorers of old medical literature, from the time of Hippocrates to that of Paracelsus and Van Helmont, will find a vast number of well-attested physiological and psychological facts and of measures or medicines for healing the sick.   Fiery World I, 315. The Chinese method of healing by means of a puncture of the corresponding centers, of which you recently read, is not curing but only a temporary relief. The ancient Egyptians produced the same reaction by pressing upon the corresponding centers. And even nowadays cupping glasses and hot poultices are in the same category. Thus, throughout life one should eliminate irritation by means of corresponding complements. The Teaching of Old China

also contained the process of healing by means of heightening the vitality. Precisely China has valued ginseng. MM.

In healing, the best fourth ray method is massage and magnetism, used with knowledge. EP1 207.   Physical therapy has its origins in ancient history with the advent of physical treatments and massage in China circa 2500 BC. Hippocrates described massage and hydrotherapy in 460 BC. The modern practice of physical therapy was developed in London in 1896, believing hospital patients needed to be massaged on a regular basis in order to maintain adequate muscle function and mobility. This special interest group grew rapidly and in 1920 the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy was formed in the United Kingdom . Similar organizations were developed in other countries, including the USA.   “During the neo-Confucian Song-Jin-Yuan era (10th to 12th Centuries), the theoratical framework from acupuncture theory (which was rooted in Confucian Han theory) was formally applied to herbal categorization (which was earlier more the domain of Daoist natural science). In particular, alignment with the Five Phases (Tastes) and the 12 channels (Meridians theory) came to be used after this period.

The Four Natures This pertains to the degree of yin and yang, ranging from cold (extreme yin), cool, neutral to warm and hot (extreme yang). The patient's internal balance of yin and yang is taken into account when the herbs are selected. For example, medicinal herbs of "hot", yang nature are used when the person is suffering from internal cold that requires to be purged, or when the patient has a general cold constituency. Sometimes an ingredient is added to offset the extreme effect of one herb.   Traditional Chinese medicine (also known as TCM, Simplified Chinese; Traditional Chinese; Pinyin: Zhongyi xué) is a range of traditional medical practices originating in China that developed over several thousand years. The English phrase "TCM" was created in the 1950s by the PRC in order to export Chinese medicine; there is no equivalent phrase in Chinese (zhongyi xue translates literally as simply "Chinese medicine studies"). In fact, TCM is a modern compilation of traditional Chinese medicine. TCM practices include theories, diagnosis and treatments such as herbal medicine, acupuncture and massage; often Qigong is also strongly affiliated with TCM. TCM is a form of so-called Oriental medicine, which includes other traditional East Asian medical systems such as traditional Japanese, and Korean medicine. wikipedia.

All ancient medicine (particularly the Tibetan, the Chinese, and the Hindu), with our modern western science, fits. The correlation of the western and eastern techniques still remains to be made, and much will be gained thereby. EH 333.   “those palliatives and ameliorating methods which gradually cure disease and eliminate undesirable conditions; they build up the form life and foster the vitality, so that disease can be thrown off. Of these methods the allopathic and the homeopathic schools and the various osteopathic and chiropractic and other therapeutic schools are good exponents.” EH 16.   This substance, which underlies all forms, is simply a transferring and transmitting agency for vital energy to the outer dense physical body. Energy sweeps through this etheric substance, free from all control by the individual human being, and quite unrealized by him because his focus of attention is astral. From the astral or emotional state of consciousness, much concerning individual physical conditions can be deduced. We must, however, eliminate those ills which are group ills and which have swept into and through all mankind from the world of etheric force, leaving him in some way depleted, or over-stimulated, or in such a condition that Death naturally supervenes. It might be stated as a basic generalization that personal physical trouble has its seat at present in the emotional body, and that that vehicle of expression is the one predominant predisposing agent in the ill health of the individual, just as group ills and the sweep of epidemics of any kind through the masses are founded in some condition in the etheric substance of the planet. Those diseases which are general, national, racial and planetary find their way to an individual via his etheric body, but are not so personal in their implications. Upon this I will later enlarge. Today I but lay down the general proposition.

JC:  There are etheric forces and energies which sweep through the vital body of man which are entirely unnoticed by him entirely because his focus of attention and conscious awareness is so strongly astral. DK makes the interesting observation that study and observation of the emotional and astral life there is a great amount of information regarding the physical conditions able to be ascertained. In the last analysis, however, we must aim to eliminate all the ills of a group classification arising from the under or over stimulation of the etheic vehicle. There is much depletion and over activity due to these group conditions and susceptibilities and which largely are resultant of the human group vital body and are not personal to the individual health. This is a “general proposition”. An observation of interest is that epidemics of “any kind” that spread through humanity invade the individual via the vital body and are therefore not due to a personal condition or point of weakness of the individual but are due to the planetary etheric substance and is therefore of a condition within the planetary body of the logos. Disease or inharmonious illness of the lower vehicles of the logos produce disease which sweeps through the vital mechanism of the planetary body therefore rendering sections of humanity susceptible to its effects.

I would also like to point out that the diseases for the masses, for the average citizen, for the intelligentsia, and for the disciples of the world may, and do, differ widely - not so much in their expression as in their field of expression. This is a point most difficult for the average healer to recognize; it is not easy or possible for him to grasp these distinctions and to gauge the point in evolution which a man may have reached. Some diseases must be dealt with from the mental plane, and will call in the mind of the healer; others require a concentration of emotional energy by the healing agent; and again, in other cases, the healer should seek to be only a transmitter of pranic energy to the etheric body of the patient, via his own etheric body. How many healers are really consciously aware of the focus of the consciousness or the life force in the patient with whom they may be concerned?

JC: We have four classifications here:

  1. The masses.

  2. The average citizen.

  3. The intelligentsia.

  4. Disciples.

A distinction is made that although diseases for these four types may manifest in similar ways through diseases of a similar type or nature, it is the “field of expression” which differs greatly. Cancer is equally likely to appear in an individual of the mass or in a disciple as the rotation of the centres and life activity slows down. The distinction however must be considered as to the expression or conscious awareness of the person and how therefore they are polarised. DK questions how many students and healers are themselves “consciously aware” of the focus of consciousness and life force within the patient.   How many realize anything of the type of healing which it is possible and necessary to apply to a disciple? How few realize that no disciple, for instance, can place himself in the hands of the average magnetic healer or radiatory worker, or psychological expert of any kind! A disciple dare not subject himself to the auric emanations of any chance healer, nor put himself in the power of the inexperienced academic psychologist, no matter how prominent he may be. He may, however, subject himself to the wise skill of the physical plane physician or surgeon, as - for him - the physical body is but an automaton. He can therefore avail himself of physical means for its benefiting. Much of the failure of the healing methods at present employed consists in the inability of the healer to:

JC: A sound warning is given to all disciples. No disciple whatever should place themselves under the judgement or influence [power] of any healer, magnetic or radiatory, of the general or average type. Great caution is given to students. This equally applies to the diagnosis and influence and subject power of the inexperienced academic psychologist, this he dare not do no matter what or how prominent, worldly, or qualified he or she may be. DK makes the distinction between “inexperienced” and “academic” reminding that the average highly academically qualified psychologist mostly has not an esoteric understanding of any disciple and certainly not the initiate. The greater always includes the lesser and never the other way around. For instance, an initiate disciple of the 2nd degree may well encounter mental/emotional problems. He or she certainly will as it is these that determine the “battle ground”. DK informs us that mental institutions and the like have many disciples who are either displaying signs of soul infusion together with the personality battle and consequential a temporarily unbalanced mental body. Certainly though, no aspirant or average psychologist can in any way understand or diagnose with any certainty or accuracy the psychological issues or problematic manifestations of such a disciple, and it would be dangerous for the disciple to allow such, as DK makes plain. It is only allowable for such a disciple to “subject” themselves to the “wise skill” of the physical plane physician or surgeon precisely because the physical body is an automaton and un-principled sheath.

1.  Gauge the extent of the trouble, where it may be located basically, and in what body it principally arises and lies. 2.  Know where the patient stands upon the ladder of evolution, and where, therefore, he must look first for the source of the difficulty. 3.  Differentiate between the diseases which are due to inner personal conditions, or to inherited tendencies, or to group distribution. [27] 4.  To know whether the disease should be handled, 5.  All opathically or homeopathically, for both can play their part at times, or through any of the other media of modern skill and science. 6.  Through radiation or magnetization, or both. 7.  Through right inner psychological adjustment, aided by true insight on the part of the healing agent. 8.  Through calling in the power of a man's own soul - a thing that is not possible except to advanced people. 9.  Through definite occult means, such as forming a healing triangle of - Master - Patient - Healer  This method involves much knowledge and a high point of spiritual attainment on the part of the healer; - it also presupposes the healer's link with a Master and the Master's group, plus the earned right to call upon that group for energy on behalf of the patient - a thing as yet rarely granted.

JC: A list of consideration is given by the Master for the healer and student to study and take on board. Of note is the “right inner psychological adjustment, aided by true insight on the part of the healing agent”. This is of great interest and should sum what has been discussed regarding the disciple and incidentally of the average “chance healer”. It was previously mentioned that the Tibetan is not interested in training individual healers, only the healing functions as a group is being considered and of that group energy, permission for its use  as an earned right is “rarely granted”.

I would like first of all to point out that my purpose and intent is not to write a medical treatise. I shall not, therefore, deal with the anatomy of the body, nor shall I discuss the symptoms of diseases, except quite incidentally. I do not intend to elaborate symptoms or consider the many [28] diseases with long names which distinguish the race at this time; all such information you can gather from the ordinary textbooks, if you so choose, and these you can study, if you care to do so. I find it personally not particularly satisfying. We will start with the premise that there is disease; that disease is an effect of inner causes; that man has made as vast strides in the understanding of the effect of these causes as they produce changes in the outer garment of man, as science has made in the understanding of the outer garment of God, the world of phenomenal nature.

JC: It is clear the Tibetan does not find the detailed studying of disease necessary or a healthy past time. I think he mentions somewhere that it focuses the disciple too firmly in the physical permanent atom, which is not desirable. Obviously some disciples whose vocation and service requires may perfectly well do so with facility. The ameliorative and palliative and curative work of medicine and surgery are proved beyond all controversial discussion. The methods employed, such as the vivisection of animals, may rightly cause distress. In spite of all this the indebtedness of mankind to the medical profession is great, and the service rendered to humanity by the profession does largely offset the evil. That they know not everything is true; that there is a small percentage of physicians and surgeons (less than in any other profession) who are self-seeking and no credit to their craft is equally true; that they already know enough to be willing to admit how very much more there is to be known is also correct. But that it is a great and good and self-sacrificing group within the human family, is equally true. Forget this not.

JC: Once again it is affirmed that palliative, ameliorative, curative and surgical methods of healing are “proved” beyond all controversy. Fundamentally we are dealing with the elimination or reducing of symptoms [such as pain] and with the curing of effects and their cause. We are advisedly informed that this has over time included the use of animal experimentation and vivisection. This is a subject often discussed in the media today and most no something of it. However whilst DK designates this as an evil, It is clear that the indebtedness that mankind owes to the medical profession is great with the great service rendered largely offsetting the evil. We are advised to take this into consideration as the toll the animals took on human life over past eons is probably incalculable to us. Past karma has to be alone accountable for this along with the wise discrimination of those good persons in the medical and scientific professions of today. This is being worked out and we are assured that there are less self-seeking people in the medical profession than in any other or today and this we should not forget.   I deal with the subjective aspect of man, and with the secondary causes which have their roots in man's inner bodies and in the subjective side of nature itself. The major primary causes, as I earlier explained, are impossible for you to grasp. They lie beyond the capacity of the concrete mind. I seek to make clear what man may do to free himself increasingly from the accumulation of the past, both individually and as a group, and in so doing to clear his physical body of the germs of disease. It must, however, be borne in mind that many diseases are of a group [29] nature, and are consequently inherent in humanity itself. Just as the insect world devastates and destroys the vegetable kingdom, as any chance walker through the woods can note, so germs - individual and group - today devastate and destroy the human kingdom. They are agents of destruction and are performing a definite office and duty in the great scheme of things at present.

JC: Today germs play an important part in the function of life and death of humanity. This seems an incredible statement and also is infact a very important one. DK with his very dry and scientific approach simply states that as yet, the majority of men do not die at the behest of their own souls through the conscious withdrawal from the physical body. Analytically and obviously then, men and women have to die largely by other means, and due to the abundance of disease affecting humanity this how the “agents of destruction” carry out their “definite office” and duty in the scheme of things. To this end, we are told and can see that they “devastate and destroy” mankind. In considering germs and their part in the body the Chohan Hilarion states there are relatively large spaces between cells and molecules, and even between electrons within the atom. In doing so he sets before us a sub universe not unlike the heavenly universe composed of the myriads of suns, planets and all manner of other components. He illustrates that within this lesser space are other lives, greater in size than the atoms such as we understand today as being Proteins, Viruses, Bacteria [germs] and Cells. His keynote for this exercise seems to be, that of proportionate space between microscopic or invisible matter which he states as being "where one must disappear to give space to the other." This aids our picture of such matters.

Micro-organisms that are injurious to the tissues of the body secrete and expel still more minute forms of life which are just as injurious to the nervous fluids as the former are to the tissues, and these in turn secrete and expel yet finer forms of psycho-organisms. The "devourers" (one degree of the fiery lives).

A higher degree of the fiery lives, "the builders", It is said "the lowest subdivisions of Prana are the microbes of science". There is a life spark, a little life in every atom of molecule of Fire, Air, Earth or Water. These are the fiery lives, the constructors and devourers of Form.  The black magicians have been rightly termed, the great Disintegrators. Hilarion.

JC: The Master Djwhal Khul and the Chohan Hilarion both use negative terms to describe germs. DK calls them “agents of destruction” and H calls them the “devourers”. Hilarion also goes on to call black magicians the “great disintegrators” and in association with germs describes how such devourers are used sometimes at their behest to carry out certain means of attack. DK also describes them as carrying out a certain office of destruction in general to the human family. HE also states that all disease is ultimately the result of cosmic evil. Therefore we can see why they are agents of destruction and devourers in minute form. We might recall that the black lodge are used by the great white lodge to carry out certain evolutionary means at this time. An analogy should here be noted.   When  a  votary  of  the  Black  Lodge  desires  to  wreak  vengeance upon, or kill a man or animal, he first generates and then transmits that deadly force to another, either by direct action or by slower forms of infection. Hilarion.

Dugpas work on the Linga Shar ra of other people. The Linga Shar ra in the spleen is the perfect picture of the man, and is good or bad, according to his own nature. SD3 588.

The black magician uses the energy of the lower three centers (the organs of generation, the spleen, and the solar plexus) synthesizing their energy by an act of the will and directing it to the center at the base of the spine, so that the fourfold energy is thence transmitted to the throat center. TCF 988.

They burn and destroy the material sheath, seeking to imprison the escaping volatile essence as the form disintegrates. TCF 490.

The black Magician attains results through the agency of force external to the sphere involved, and produces transmutation through the agency of resolvents (if so I might term it) or through the method of the reduction of the form, rather than through radiation, as does the white Magician.

These differences of method need to be carefully considered and their reaction visualised in connection with different elements, atoms, and forms. TCF 448.

JC: Resolvent, (adjective) science. Causing or capable of causing something to separate into its constituent elements.

Resolvent, (noun) science.  A substance that causes or is capable of causing something to separate into its constituent elements. Encarta.

I in this instance we may rightly relate resolvent with, reduction, depletion, disintegration and devouring. All are external forms of attack employed by the dark brother. We should note that the "great disintegrators", are the etheric burning deva material used by black magicians and they work also with the lesser devourers, the "diseases induced by the "devourers" (one degree of the fiery lives)" described by Hilarion. These are identical to those who carry out the "method of the reduction of the form" described by DK. The dark brother uses purposefully Bacillus and Virus to spread disease and plague, hence the white lodge holds back plague to great degree. The dark brother also uses a more specific and focussed method of the "mixture of etheric force and dense physical energy" to control and deplete his victim. He uses external reduction and devourment and takes the term "separation" to its utmost meaning in regard to the cohesion of the atomic form or molecular makeup of the body of a victim. The elemental constitution, the atomic sheath and the internal lesser atoms, the differentiated molecules are destroyed and not allowed to live out their natural cycle of evolution and advancement to greater development and redemption while the positive spirit is imprisoned and cycle is curtailed. What a heinous crime this is.   It seems that some of these microbes are created also by our un-spiritual thoughts.  That is, our misuse of the feeling and thinking processes in our own selfish natures.  We are repeatedly told of the ability of our own thoughts to create polluted thought forms and it is precisely us, humanity that pollutes the sacred spatial fires and spiritual atmosphere. Humanity it seems is responsible for its diseases and plagues or epidemics.  However, we also have to contend with such influences from other spatial sources and bodies in the heavens. Disease is an earthly condition and a systemic one also. These spatial microbes created by ill thought manifest as the germs and organisms such as that which thrive in any residence which promotes an environment for the like.   A body which is lacking in psychic energy will precisely become vulnerable to the un-healthy condition of these microbes; however it seems also that someone who may have a large store of psychic energy and have a sensitive and delicate constitution such as the disciple still may become overburdened and fall ill at times. The devas which burn and destroy as well as being fiery builders are easily set loose upon the physical sheath of the ignorant human. This is sometimes done consciously by the dark magician in order to destroy and reduce some victim to further the goal of the magician's selfish purpose. They are then, both the lower order devas, including the deva devourers, easily manipulated as are many ignorant humans.   …I seek to point out, therefore, that my avoidance of medical technicalities will be deliberate, though we shall refer often to the physical body and to the diseases of which it is a prey. EH 29.

PolarisProject Group Study: Esoteric Healing. Study letter 5

JC: To briefly continue my initial touching upon the subject of germs in letter 4, we might think upon the rapid spread and increase in potency of virus and bacillus today which is ever in the news and media. The degree of humanities inability to contain what seems sometimes to be an overwhelming increase in infection and sometimes deaths due to potent and virulent spread of germs within the medical profession and within humanity in general, acting as carriers also, we might consider the growth of the so called super bugs and their resistance to antibiotics and treatments generally. If it is true that the spread of germs and the increased numbers of previously thought controlled and easily cured conditions are on the increase, perhaps this is the proof of this reference on germs and the incoming 7th ray, from DK.   But the bug can also cause serious infections, and over the last 50 years the bacteria have become resistant to various antibiotics.

Superbug 'outstrips MRSA cases' There has been little change in the number of people catching superbugs while in hospital in Northern Ireland, a new report reveals. However, it shows that once again cases of MRSA have been far outstripped by those of another superbug, called C difficile. It causes severe diarrhoea and - like MRSA - can prove fatal. Its spores can live for a long time in the environment and is often not eradicated by cleaning. MRSA stands for methicillin-resistant, or multiple antibiotic-resistant, Staphylococcus aureus. Also known as Staph aureus, this is a group of bacteria commonly found on the skin that can cause infections. There are many different types: the one known as MRSA is causing increasing problems because, as the name suggests, it's very resistant to treatment with antibiotics. bbc.

TWO new deadly superbugs are spreading through hospitals, experts warned yesterday. They are killing as many patients as MRSA - and are both even more resistant to drugs. Acinetobacter has killed 39 people and infected 101 in St Mary's Hospital in Paddington, West London, since October. It can cause fatal pneumonia, skin and blood infections. Microbiologist Dr Mark Enright, of Bath University, said: "Some strains are really hard to treat, resistant to almost everything. They are a cause for concern." Clostridium difficile. The Health Protection Agency issued new guidance to hospitals to try to halt the bug, including isolating patients and closing contaminated wards. www.   The effects of this ray force are most peculiar and will be a great deal more prevalent than heretofore, as this ray is now coming into power. It is this energy which is largely responsible for infections and contagious diseases. The keynote of the work of the seventh ray is to bring together life and matter upon the physical plane. This, however, when viewed from the angle of imperfection, is a bringing together (if you can understand the implications) of Life, the lives and the general livingness of the creative process. This is symbolized by the promiscuity and the endless moving interplay of all life within all lives. The result is therefore the activity of all germs and bacteria within the medium which will best nurture them. EH 304.

JC: Such a spread of the ‘agents of destruction and the devourers’ and their rapid increase in virulence may be accounted for by their ability to absorb this 7th ray. This ray is the ray largely responsible for infection and disease due to its unique ability to bring together life and matter. Germs are therefore more potently infused with the life principle which may account for their increased resistance and “promiscuity” or infectious activity, hence their ability to “perform a definite office and duty” with increased facility today, maybe more than at any other time even with our modern methods or cure, palliative and ameliorative techniques. Perhaps the “moving interplay of all life within all lives” gives a definite clue as to ability to develop rapidly into new strains with greater resistances to treatment. Only a stronger life aspect can resist death or depletion and this applies equally to microbes and germs, virus and bacillus as well as humanity at this present time.    Esoteric Healing - Chapter I - The Psychological Causes of Disease

Secondly, I seek today to give you another of the Laws of Healing, as well as one of the Rules for the Healer. Study these with care.   Law II Disease is the product of, and subject to, three influences. First, a man's past, wherein he pays the price of [30] ancient error. Second, his inheritance, wherein he shares with all mankind those tainted streams of energy which are of group origin. Thirdly, he shares with all the natural forms that which the Lord of Life imposes on His body. These three influences are called "The Ancient Law of Evil Sharing." This must give place some day to that new Law of Ancient Dominating Good which lies behind all that God made. This law must be brought into activity by the spiritual will of man.

JC: Remarkably, we are told that the three influences are called "The Ancient Law of Evil Sharing." Assuredly we must cast our minds back to another statement that…

"All disease (and this is a platitude) is caused by lack of harmony - a disharmony to be found existing between the form aspect and the life. EH 12."

"The law of cause and effect, called Karma in the East, governs all this. Karma must be regarded in reality as the effect (in the form life of our planet) of causes, deep seated and hidden in the mind of God. EH 15."

JC: This ancient law has to be another name for the ‘one law of karma’ as applied to the sharing of disease. Karma “governs all disease”. These three influences all refer to current karmic limitation due to influence of past Error, Inheritance, and planetary Imposition. All these reflect past conditions imposed in three ways on the form or body of man. The three methods produce disease which is governed by karma and it is obvious that this is a law of past causes. This law must at some point give way to a new Law of ‘Ancient Dominating Good’. Djwhal Khul has already told us that it is in fact far easer to amount good karma than bad. Thus we previously considered…

When I point out that the Law of Karma, rightly understood and rightly wielded, can bring that which produces happiness, good, and freedom from pain more easily than it brings pain, with its chain of consequences, do you feel able to grasp the significance of what I am saying? EH 20.

JC: Karma may also be good karma and suffering is only a partial explanation, with the “rightly understood” wielding of humanities circumstance and actions we may also bring goodness and freedom from all types of pain, and this more easily so. In this we should consider that the “cyclic return of substance” is therefore squared by the good or beneficent actions being returned greatly multiplied…  We are told then, that behind ancient evil otherwise known as cosmic evil, there is a law of dominating good which lies behind “all that God made.”  This of course holds the clue to how good karma may be attained and harmonious conditions re acquired. This law may be brought into activity by the spiritual Will of man. Previously in letter 3 we considered the formula for disease as d=3smdlc2.

All Disease [lack of harmony] equals [catalysed third substance] related or multiplied by Desire and Will [catalyst motion and direction] and karmic duration squared.

Degree of Motive Power = Desire d

Degree of Direction = Will w    producing disease, D.

D = catalysed third substance = 3s

= K "dimension of the circle of operation" of cyclic/spiral Law.

d = 3smdlc2   18/06/2007.   The Ancient Law of Evil Sharing.

JC: I am basing my consideration of a formula for “dominating good” or karma which produces happiness, good, and freedom from pain” on DK’s following indications. He has instructed in his treatise on esoteric healing that there will be a “new language related to energy and force” as science and the discovery of the release of atomic energy has made possible, recognising the physical body as an “electrical unit”. It is along these lines that I will make an attempt at “clear analysis of the wording of these ancient formulas of healing” and of his words in general. All reduced scientific formulation when grasped, should convey in an intuitive instant the “the explosive nature of energy, when in contact with force, or of the soul in relation to substance” and brothers this applies equally to the impact of karma, and all which has in the past been “completely unknown or veiled in mystical language” and “unsuitable language”. Such formula has been given by DK veiled in this mystical language which has been much to his frustration with his thoughts that it may be thought “puerile” and “disappointing” or “needlessly abstruse” which is “descriptive of possible immediate reaction”. Recent work has then been at times somewhat along the lines of “the new scientific formulas and the new approach” concerning this theme with an initial attempted grasp of this “new language of energy and force” and its indications and application along the lines of “occult electrical phenomena". It is of course to be grasped intuitively and applied as an almost spontaneous summation of its properties and spiritual significance.   A chemical formula is a concise way of expressing information about the atoms that constitute a particular chemical compound. A chemical formula is also a short way of showing how a chemical reaction occurs. For molecular compounds, it identifies each constituent element by its chemical symbol and indicates the number of atoms of each element found in each discrete molecule of that compound. If a molecule contains more than one atom of a particular element, this quantity is indicated using a subscript after the chemical symbol (although 19th-century books often used superscripts). For ionic compounds and other non-molecular substances, the subscripts indicate the ratio of elements in the empirical formula. In physics and other sciences, energy (from the Greek energos, "active, working") is a scalar physical quantity, often represented by the symbol E, that is used to describe a conserved property of objects and systems of objects. Energy may come in many different forms. The different forms are all equivalent (in some cases overlapping) and may be converted into the other forms of energy, transferred to other matter or stored. While energy may be converted from one form to another, it is never created or destroyed. wikipedia.

The explosive nature of energy, when in contact with force, or of the soul in relation to substance, is completely unknown or veiled in mystical language. EH 741.   In the mass–energy equivalence formula E=mc2, mass and energy are more than equivalent, they are different forms of the same thing. Whenever energy is added to a system, the system gains mass. Wikipedia.

JC: Quite clearly Einstein’s brilliant theory of mass–energy equivalence formula E = mc2 informs that mass and energy are equivalent and may be converted into another from of energy or mass but that energy or mass will never be lost or diminished in any notable or significant way. When mass loses energy, as in fatigue or deterioration or disease [infection] through energy/soul inhibition, it is because the informing mass/energy is not being infused with a higher sustaining energy or rhythm. This produces deterioration or disease in matter and may be understood in an occult fashion as “resolvent” or reduction of the form or material mass/sheath, through some type of external or internal force such as virus or bacillus or over or under stimulation of an organ, which is greater in its disintegrating force than the infusing higher energy of cohesion due to the congestion or inhibition of the higher energy. In an equal and opposite manner, all disease or disintegration or reduction of mass of the form will be healed by increased mass and its building into the area of disease with correct function due to correct inflow of a higher energy or rate of vibration, producing also a relative transmutation of the mass, this is E = mc2 and the true understanding of “energetic import”. DK states Not even the scientists responsible for the discovery have the faintest idea of the far-reaching effects of this momentous happening.” We are then confronted with the sublime explanation that the scientists who developed and calculated with certain mathematical exactitude that when a calculated amount of heat and vibration [force] is applied to a certain amount of Uranium, which is a material already in an advanced state of transmutation, then the internal soul energy of the uranium atoms will be forcefully released producing “energetic import” as it is occultly understood. As DK makes clear, this applies equally to the human electrical unit [man] and it is through the “energetic importing” of the higher spiritual will [energy] under the direction of the controlled mind that healing of a diseased area, its mass therein, will be under law, re formed and healed according to its original condition and state of evolution. The diseased mass within the human system will regain mass and health proportionate to its reception of the higher soul energy. It is this fact that those scientists had no conception of I posit. We should note that in both instances of karma km=mdlc2 producing disease [which it governs] d=3smdlc2 and the aspect of karma producing healing or right conditions; it is the use of the individual directing lower mind that is the motivating and directional force which determine either disease or healing of mass.

We could word this otherwise and say that when soul energy and the right use of the will (which in the individual is the reflection and the agent of the will energy of the soul) is released and rightly directed by the mind, then disease can be handled and brought eventually to an end. It is therefore by the imposition of a higher energy and of a higher rhythm upon the lower forces that disease can be controlled. Disease is therefore the result in the physical body of the failure to bring in these higher energies and rhythms, and that, in its turn, is dependent upon the point in evolution. EH 94.

Healing = [Spiritual Will and Buddhi] related or multiplied by [Individual Will Directing Mind] and karmic duration squared.

For instance, the "Gadget"-style bomb used in the Trinity test and the bombing of Nagasaki had an explosive yield equivalent to 21 kt of TNT. About 1 kg of the approximately 6.15 kg of plutonium in each of these bombs fission into lighter elements totalling almost exactly one gram less, after cooling (the heat, light and radiation in this case carried the missing gram of mass). Wikipedia.

JC: It is a now a standard calculation verified by the acknowledgement of DK of the value in terms of conversion of soul energy [of the atom] into the energy mass of the form through the equation E = mc2.   Using SI units, E=mc2 is calculated as follows:

E = (1 kg) × (299,792,458 m/s)2 = 89,875,517,873,681,764 J (˜90 × 1015 Joules) Accordingly, one gram of mass — the mass of a U.S. dollar bill — is equivalent to the following amounts of energy:

= 89,875,517,873,681.764 J (˜90 terajoules), precisely by definition = 24,965,421.631 578 267 777… kilowatt-hours (˜25 GW-hours) = 21,466,398,651,400.058 278 398 777 1090 calories (˜21 Tcal) = 21.466 398 651 400 058 278 398 777 1090 kilotons of TNT-equivalent energy (˜21 kt)

= 85,185,554,537.701 118 960 880 666 4808 BTUs (˜85 billion BTUs) wikipedia.

What is a law, my brother? It is the imposition (upon both the lesser and the more important) of the will and purpose of that which is superlatively great. Therefore, it lies beyond man's ken. Man has some day to learn that all the laws of nature have their higher, spiritual counterparts, and of these we shall shortly be in search. Our laws today are but secondary laws. They are the laws of group life and they govern the kingdoms of nature and find their expression (for the human kingdom) through the medium of the mind, of the emotional nature, and through a physical plane agent. It is not my intention in this present short treatise to elucidate the primary laws. I but state them, and at a future time (dependent upon certain factors yet undeveloped) I may deal with them.

JC: A law is the imposing of the will upon the lesser and the more important by the superlatively great. It is the greater will that is imposed and there are many higher or primary laws which stand above the lesser laws of nature. Human laws express through the medium of the mental, emotional nature and are implemented via a physical plane agent. DK may in some future time deal with the higher primary laws. However, at this time he does but states them.   In this treatise, the third part of it is stated to deal with the basic laws of Healing. These deal not with the Laws referred to above, but with the practical aspects of the healing art.

The second rule for the healer is as follows:   Rule two The healer must achieve magnetic purity through purity of life. He must attain that dispelling radiance which shows itself in every man when he has linked the centers in the head. When this magnetic field is established, the radiation too goes forth. [31]

JC: Without purity of life there will be no magnetic purity and consequently no hope for true healing abilities. It is stated in SD that in the Satya Cycle presumably because of its purity and lack of sin and consequential lack of bad health the longevity cycle was four hundred years approx then correspondingly 300, 200, and in our kali yuga/age it is of course 70 to 100 though it can be very much less in extremely unhealthy conditions i.e. lack of purity and degradation of spirit. Purity allows the free flow of soul energy, its attraction and radiation being unimpeded by course material atoms.   The significance of this will be somewhat apparent to the advanced esoteric student. As you know, the magnetic field is established when the powerful vibration of the center in front of the pituitary body, and the center around and above the pineal gland, swing into each other's orbit. The only controversial point in connection with the above rule (which we shall have later to consider) is how and in what manner magnetic purity is to be achieved, and how the two centers in the head can form together one magnetic field. Later, in our conclusion, which is intended to be intensely practical, I will touch upon these two points.

JC: We should note the indication of the swinging into orbit of two magnetic centres in the proximity of the pineal and pituitary glands. This will form a field of magnetic interplay and transference of magnetic energy.   One of the things which should definitely emerge in our studies is the fact that disease is seldom of individual origin, unless a man misspends his life and definitely misuses his body (through drink or sexual dissipation), and that the bulk of the disease to be found in the world today is almost entirely of group origin, is inherited, is the result of infection, or the result of undernourishment. The last named cause is primarily an evil of civilization; it is the result of economic maladjustment or the corruption of food. As I earlier pointed out, these latter causes of disease are not primarily the result of inner subtle forces, but are the pouring upwards, into the etheric body, of energies from the physical plane itself and from the outer world of forces.

JC: The bulk of all disease is of group origin and far out weighs the individual disease incurred by self indulgence of some kind. Most are inherited, of infection [“general, national, racial and planetary”] through epidemics of planetary influence vis the planetary etheric body and karma which also, through wrong group living, produce poor living conditions and under nourishment. EH 25.   Little attention has been paid by occult teachers to these forces which come from without, which originate upon the physical plane, and which affect the inner bodies. There are physical energy and streams of force entering into the etheric bodies of all forms, just as the world illusion and the miasmas of the astral plane oft have their causes in physical plane conditions. The energies entering into the centers of man from the subtler levels have oft been considered in occult books, but the forces which find their way into the centers from the world of physical plane life [32] are seldom realized or discussed. This is a somewhat new thought which I offer for your consideration.   JC:  We are offered a “new thought” regarding disease. It might profit us to consider the forces which enter the centres of man from outer physical plane living. These forces enter as part of the conditioning substance of the planetary etheric body and we are told that they “sweep through” the human etheric mechanism. For all these forces and their resulting disease we are told that we are not responsible. Epidemics of “any kind” that spread through humanity invade the individual via the vital body and are therefore not due to a personal condition or point of weakness of the individual but are due to the planetary etheric substance. However, we know that karma ‘governs all disease’

I have asked A.A.B. to insert a very brief synopsis of some of the points I have already made under the heading, What is Disease? I suggest the following:

1.  All disease is disharmony and lack of alignment and control.

2.  Disease is found in all the four kingdoms in nature.

3.  Disease is purificatory in effect.

4.  Definite methods of healing are peculiar to humanity, and mental in origin.

  JC:

1. The acquiring of karmic mass may be due to disharmony, lack of alignment and control.

2.  All four kingdom are subject to planetary karma.

3. The effect of disease clears inharmonious conditions. karma is accounted for and purification may be attained.

4. Healing is “peculiar” and therefore unique to humanity and is the product of the directing mind.

* Disease is a fact in nature. * Antagonism to disease simply energizes it.

* Disease is not the result of wrong human thought.

JC: Disease is a fact and must be faced as such. Antagonism to disease energises it as energy follows thought. Disease in the case of the human is astral and due to desire of some kind with the undeveloped using very little thought or true mental activity, although DK implies that some few are mental in origin. Desire, we might consider to be kamas/manasic and finds expression through activity lived out under the satisfying of the desire and the lower mental direction of the developing mind being associated with the physical brain. Disease is not purely due to wrong thoughts.   So few of them have a mental origin, in spite of all that Christian Science or Mental Science may say to the contrary. Perhaps I should say, rather, that they are not based on wrong human thought, though all evil can be aggravated and intensified by wrong thought. Many or perhaps most of the [65] complaints from which average man suffers are based upon astral causes or upon some clearly defined desire. A formulated desire is one that finds expression in some form of activity. EH 65.

* Disease is a process of liberation and the enemy of that which is static. * The law of cause and effect governs disease as it governs all else in manifestation.

JC: Again we find that Karma governs all disease and all else in manifestation.

55 Karma (action) is of three kinds:

1.  Agami: - The bodily actions good and bad - done after the acquisition of the discriminative knowledge. (Vide Shri Sankaracharya's Tatwa Bodh, question 34).
2.  Sanchita: - The actions formerly done, serving as seeds to grow the countless births; the store of former actions preserved. Ibid., question 35).
3.  Prarabdha: - The actions of this body (i.e. birth) which give pleasure or pain in this life alone. (Ibid., question 36.)" - The Theosophist, Vol. VIII, p. 170.

56 Karma. "It must be remembered that in every action of man the influence of his prior karma constitutes an important element. For the accomplishment of every action, says, Shri Krishna, we need five essentials:

1.  The actor.
2.  The determined will.
3.  Implements for committing the act, such as hands, tongue, etc.
4.  The exercise of these implements.
5.  The influence of antecedent conduct.

The work which a man does with his body, speech or mind, whether it be just or unjust, has these five essentials or factors engaged in the performance. (Gita, XVIII, 13, 14, 15.)

These five essentials of karma are divided into 2 groups in the Mahabharata:

1.  man's present action (including the first four essentials) and,
2.  the result of his past action (which forms the fifth essential).  TCF 472.

JC: This shows how the accumulated weight of karma is amounted over past lives and may not necessarily be `worked out' in a present lifetime. This is the burden allotted by the karmic scribes amounting to a debt not easily worked off in a single lifetime as HPB indicates as a rope of karma.. This amounts to the action of cyclic law, an aspect of the law of "Affinity" and the law of karma and magnetic attraction so closely related to the 2nd ray. The intricacies of karma are complex beyond our computation.

We found also that healing is brought about in three ways:   1.  Through the application of the methods of the many schools of medicine and surgery, and allied groups. 2.  Through the use of psychology.

3.  Through the activity of the soul.

JC: We have considered many schools of amelioration and palliative methods along with surgery and general practice in medicine. General psychology is today young but developing and is rightly used by the general public but not the disciple. Esoteric psychology concerns the disciple and initiate. The study and development of this science reflects humanities growing mental awareness and orientation. It largely concerns the control of the mind over the emotions in general and is a western equivalent to raja yoga.  The “true” art or method of healing is via the calling in of soul energy and activity. This we have seen is a very scientific method of “soul import” and treats the patient as an electrical unit. Diseased mass within the human system will regain mass and health proportionate to its reception of the higher soul energy. Soul importation accounts for healing of the mass of the human electrical unit.   An important reference to the healing of cosmic evil is here given by DK as we consider that “all disease” in ultimate conclusion is the result of cosmic evil. In this we are given the exact process and method of its eradication. To seal the door against cosmic evil it seems, does not “drive it out” as is apparent when it is so easily let in again by ignorant humans. This is a fascinating statement. To seal must mean to seal the door which lets in this evil stream from astral levels into the physical/etheric plane and world of outer human affairs. Comparatively and compared to the force sent to drive out evil, mans ability to seal it seems fragile indeed. We can see this “struggle” demonstrated and overcome perfectly by “refusal” at the ninth initiation. It is a refusal to make any contact whatever with it. This gives us a clue as to the struggle for humanity to seal the door, for only at such a very high initiation is it possible to make such a resolute refusal. Thus humanity struggles, though as with renunciation, every refusal or stand against, along the way leads to achievement.   In the ninth Initiation of Refusal, this heightened spiritual perception is presented to us under the word "Existence," for existence is a livingness coupled with awareness which "finds its own place and the spiritual house of its Being which is the true home of all Beings, but of this - our planetary forms know naught." This the initiate has at last learnt to find, after the struggle with evil in himself, after the struggle with materialism and with evil in the human family, and after his struggle to aid in the "closing of the door where evil dwells" and his refusal to make any contact (even with good intention) with cosmic evil. RI 737.   There is one aspect of initiation which is apt to be overlooked. Every initiation is a process of energy transmission from a higher center of energy to a lower; every initiation charges the initiate with electrical force, and this charging and recharging is related to what H.P.B. calls "the mystery of electricity." These transmissions of energy enhance the magnetic-attractive force of the initiate, and at the same time are eliminative in their effects. In this fact lies a great planetary truth and the key to the science of planetary redemption. When the spiritual and the [736] electrical charging of the three major centers on the planet - Shamballa, the Hierarchy and Humanity - has reached a high stage of receptive efficiency, a certain cosmic Avatar will "become conscious of the vibratory quality of the little point of light within the solar sphere" and will then "turn His gaze and send His force unto that point of light, and cosmic evil will be driven out and find no more a place on Earth." RI 736.

PolarisProject Group Study: Esoteric Healing. Study letter 6.

1. Causes Arising in the Emotional-Desire Nature   In A Treatise on White Magic, I gave the world for the first time information as to the nature and the control of the astral body. This book is practically the first one ever given out to the public on this theme. Much has been given in the past on the subject of the physical body and its care, both by exoteric and esoteric science.   JC: We are given a fascinating account that TWM is in some regards to be associated with the healing of the astral body as a result of it being brought under control.  It is practically the first ever to be given and was a ground breaking treatise for soul control. The Tibetan equates TWM with control and care of the astral body.

Our theme is to be that of the Magic of the Soul, and the key thought, underlying all that may appear in this book, is to be found in the words of the Bhagavad Gita which runs as follows:   "Though I am Unborn, the Soul that passes not away, though I am the Lord of Beings, yet as Lord over My nature I become manifest, through the magical power of the Soul."  Gita IV.6.  TWM 5.

JC: To be lord over ones own nature predisposes the eradication of soul inhibition and of soul “import” and subsequently a threefold mechanism free from the restrictions and limitations [lack of control] of disease due to the “magical power of the soul”. We are reminded that this magical power equates in one sense as e = mc2 and is worded by DK as “energetic import” produces via the etheric mechanism a healing of mass/matter understood as h=swdmlc2 under law II of esoteric healing and therefore resulting in greater soul control and dominating good. He states…   The only true biologists are initiates of the mysteries, for they have an understanding of life and its purpose and are so identified with the life principle that they think and speak in terms of energy and its effects, and all their activities in connection with the work of the planetary hierarchy are based on a few fundamental formulas which concern life as it makes itself felt through its three differentiations or aspects: energy, force, matter. TWM 29.

3.  Initiates. These persons will arrive at a meaning which will not be apparent to those in the first group and which will only be suspected by the more advanced members of the second. Within themselves they know the truth of many of its statements and will realize the subjective working out of many of the laws. These laws of nature have effects in three distinct realms:

4.  Physically, where they demonstrate as effects in the dense form.

5.  Etherically, where they demonstrate as the energy lying back of those effects.

6.  Mentally, where they concern the impulses which produce the other two. TWM

7.   Much of it is true, and some of it is illusion. It is illusion because it is based on false premises. Modern esotericist have dealt with the subject of the etheric body, and this too has been partially true and partially false, but it is more generally true from the occult point of view than it is exoterically.

I may surprise you here if I tell you that A Treatise on White Magic is also true as far as it goes, but it is necessarily limited, and because of these limitations it is also partially incorrect. Does the above statement astonish you? Remember, how can it be entirely true when we consider the limitations of your power to comprehend? It is impossible for me to convey to you the truth, because there exist neither the terminology nor an adequate groundwork of knowledge on your part. This makes my task difficult.

JC: TWM is limited due to the exceedingly difficult task of conveying the needed information due to an inadequate grounding of knowledge and comprehension and again he refers to frustration of this lack of true conveyance of information as within esoteric healing for it was “completely unknown or veiled in mystical language” and “unsuitable language”. It is referred to again that in reality he speaks of “a few fundamental formulas which concern life as it makes itself felt through its three differentiations or aspects: energy, force, matter”. It is this with which we are concerned. DK states the magical work of the soul leads to the transforming of the lower personality energies, something every one of us will do as aspiring White Magicians.

This teaching on healing is likewise the hardest I have yet undertaken, and this for two reasons. First (the real nature of) the phrase "subtler bodies" is somewhat meaningless, is it not? They are not bodies like the physical body. They can be regarded as centers or reservoirs of particular types of force, attached to each individual, and possessing their proper inlets and outlets. They are collections of atoms, vibrating at high speed and colored (according to some schools of occultism) by certain definite hues; they emit a certain tone, and are at varying points of evolution. According to others, they are states of consciousness and some regard them as made in the likeness of a man. What is your definition, Brother of mine? [34]

JC: It is apparent how many differing approaches there are to this treatise on healing and perhaps all of the Tibetans and AAB’s work, and it is this which has made it the “hardest yet undertaken”. The atoms of the bodies physical/etheric and of the other bodies we are told are of “varying points in evolution” and DK briefly explains this when describing the building in of newer more evolved atoms into the bodies including the physical and replacing 6th ray atoms with 7th ray atoms. He states, the physical sheath and the other sheaths are made up of those atoms responding both to Piscean forces and those responding to Aquarian forces. The former are being "occultly withdrawn" as their activity is proportionally decreased as the Piscean 6th ray force is withdrawn. Correspondingly, atoms which respond predominantly to Aquarian and 7th ray force are simultaneously being stimulated with resulting increase in vibratory activity and facility to more adequately reflect light via the bodies and via the physical sheath. It will be obvious to the reader that the physical brain and bodily constitution largely composed of the Piscean 6th ray atoms will not respond to the new emphasis and occult faculty of direct knowledge due to the atomic rotation not being adequate to the higher vibrational activity required to transmit higher mental faculties. The intention, as DK hints, is for the body to be "composed of atomic sub-plane matter".

The astral body is, for the majority of mankind, the major determining factor to be considered. It is an outstanding cause of ill health. The reason for this is that it has a potent and predisposing effect upon the vital and etheric body. The physical body is an automaton of whichever inner body is the strongest. When you remember that the vital body is the recipient of the streams of energy, and is in fact composed and formed of such streams, and that the physical body is driven into activity by these streams, it is apparent that that stream which is the most potent is the one which will control the action of the physical body upon the physical plane. There are, however, two streams of energy which must be considered in studying the factors leading to physical plane actions. I would remind you in this connection that disease is an activity of the physical plane.

JC: It is understood as a basic truth that the major determining factor disposing individual man and woman to ill health and disease manifests in and via the astral body. It is the major focus of consciousness at this time and conditions and determines the force acting upon the etheric or vital body. Accepting then, that the emotional vehicle is where most are focussed we can see that the physical un-principled body then is recipient to and effected by the seat of the emotional nature and is then disposed to display as effects such as are the uncontrolled, upset or ill conditioned energy streams as are played out through the human body.   1.  The stream of life itself, anchored in the heart, which determines the vitality of the man, his capacity for work, and the term of his existence. 2.  The predominating stream of energy coming from the astral, mental or soul bodies. These control his expression upon the physical plane.

JC: We are given two major streams of energy. The first determines the vitality of the individual, the enduring strength and capacity for physical plane activity and also the longevity or duration for existence on the lowest physical plane.  It is the stream or anchor point of the soul or the life thread in the heart. The second predominating stream effects expression and type of activity via the astral, mental and soul bodies.   With the masses of people throughout the world, and those whom we call the vast unthinking public, the dominating factors are the stream of life and the stream of astral or desire energy. This can be either of a low or medium caliber.   With the thinking public, the dominating factors are these two streams, plus a steady inflowing and increasing tide of mental energy.   With the intelligentsia of the world and the aspirant (those ready for, or already on, the probationary path) [35] we find the above three streams reaching a point of equilibrium, and thus producing an integrating or coordinating personality. These number amongst them also the mystics of the world and the creative workers, who are conscious of the inspiration and the spiritual contact which indicates a beginning of the inflow of soul energy.

JC: The masses are conditioned by the life stream and the emotional inflow of energy which may be of a low or medium calibre. Another entry, that of the “thinking public” is presented which are also recipient to a steady and increasing inflow of  mental energy. This is today very prevalent as increasingly “all things are being shouted from the rooftops” and includes all aspects of social and community awareness and living and their increasing opinion on events and ideas around them. There is within this category as yet no equilibrium as only an achieving equilibrium is being approached by the intelligentsia and aspirants of the world. The world’s intellectuals are generally more highly educated in society with appreciation and participation in the arts and philosophies, literature and politics. The achievement of mental balance and equilibrium of these three streams of energy produce integration and co-ordination of what might be legitimately called the personality. Soul inflow determines the inspiration and appreciation of the higher values in life of the aspiring disciple, which may be artistic, philosophic or idealistic in nature. The increased mental capacity determines the process of specialisation of the mind along certain avenues of knowledge leading eventually to the pursuit of wisdom.

Esoteric Astrology - The Nature of Esoteric Astrology - Spiritual Effects of the Zodiacal Constellations  It will be apparent to you (given a little thought) that the Sun, as it veils Neptune, produces a potent effect upon the personality, symbolized for us here by the astral body, whilst Uranus (which is also veiled by the Sun) symbolizes the effect of the soul upon the personality. Hence the activity of the seventh ray, which is - from one angle - the lowest aspect of the first ray. Hence you have also the underlying idea of: [301]

JC: DK states that in the fusing of the lower vehicles we “find the above three streams reaching a point of equilibrium, and thus producing an integrating or coordinating personality” Correspondingly and astrologically speaking the integrated personality is symbolised by the outer physical Sun with the increasingly controlled astral body as a veiled and subjugated Neptune.  The magical work of the soul produces an energetic import as a sustainable and self achieved goal as the energy of a veiled Uranus symbolising higher soul energy co-ordinates the lower three fold vehicles into the beginning of a cohered and functioning personality.  Mars, Earth, Pluto and the Moon represent the lower bodies with the Sun as the resolver in one sense or producing fusion in what then becomes a fifth cohered and functioning personality body. Accordingly, to the degree of soul infusion and its relative free flow will be the state of health of the personality. At this stage there will be much movement and transference of energies within the bodies or karmic vehicles and it is this which allow for the entering of disease or d = 3smdlc2.   The non-sacred planets are only five:   1.  Mars 2.  The Earth 3.  Pluto 4.  The Moon, veiling a hidden planet.

5.  The Sun, veiling a planet.   It is interesting here to note that the non-sacred planets rule the first, the fourth, the fifth and the eighth houses in the lesser zodiac. Our Earth is also a non-sacred planet. You have, therefore, four non-sacred planets, controlling or ruling a fifth non-sacred planet - a correspondence to the four aspects of the lower man. You have there, first the physical outer shell, the etheric or vital body, astral body and the mental body, plus a fusion with the fifth body, the personality. EA 507.   With the disciples of the world, we find a group of men and women coming under the control of soul energy, whilst the other three energies are being increasingly subordinated to this higher type of control.

It should be borne in mind that there are two other types of energy with which to reckon, when considering intelligent man.   1.  The energy which is composed of the fused and blended forces of a coordinated personality. 2.  The energy of the physical plane itself, which is finally identified by the aspirant or disciple, and becomes so utterly negated that eventually it constitutes one of the major factors in the release of the centers.   Finally the time comes when the initiate works simply with three types of energy whilst expressing himself in incarnation: the energy of life itself, the negative energy of the personality, and the positive energy of the soul. Thus he is an expression in conscious manifestation of the three aspects of the Trinity.                      JC: The initiate is a conscious expression incarnating as: 1.     The energy of life itself. l

2.     The positive energy of the soul  +s

  1. The negative energy of the personality. p

Expressed energy of the working Initiate:  I= l+s –pc2    6/7/2007   Certain things should be established as occult facts in the consciousness of the healer before he is able to work constructively.   1.  First of all, that there is nothing but energy and this energy manifests itself as many differing and varying [36] energies. Of these many energies, the universe is composed. Likewise man's bodies or vehicles of manifestation are without exception constituted of energy units. These we call atoms, and these atomic units are held together in body form by the coherent force of more potent energies.

2.  The major focal point of energy to be found in human beings is that of the soul, but its potency as an agent of cohesion and of integration is as yet greater than its quality potency. In the earlier stages of human evolution, it is the coherence aspect that demonstrates. Later as man's response apparatus, or bodies, becomes more developed, the quality aspect of the soul begins to demonstrate increasingly.

JC: In reality there is naught but energy manifesting under the one law, KARMA. This energy manifests as “many and differing energies”. DK makes this definite distinction of the many varying and differing degrees and types of energy. This needs to be held in the consciousness of the occult healer as occult facts before constructive work can begin. We have a major point raised that in the earlier stages of human evolution it is the cohesion aspect which dominates whereas later in evolution it is the quality aspect of the soul which demonstrates. When DK states there is nothing but energy, he means just that. It may be an aspect of the laws of cohesion and magnetic control that coheres and integrates the personality via the soul. It is later that the quality aspect demonstrates perhaps more under the law of magnetic control

* The Law of Cohesion.  3. Manas is that which produces Cohesion. TCF 332.  4.  The Law of Magnetic Control holds sway paramountly on the buddhic plane, and in the development of the control of this law lies hid the control of the personality by the Monad via the egoic body. TCF 569.   3.  Seen from the inner side where time is not, the human creature demonstrates as an amazing kaleidoscopic mutable phenomenon. Bodies, so called, or rather aggregates of atomic units, fade out and disappear, or flash again into manifestation. Streams of colors pass and repass; they twine or intertwine. Certain areas will then suddenly intensify their brightness and blaze forth with brilliance; or again they can be seen dying out and the phenomenon in certain areas will be colorless and apparently non-existent. But always there is a persistent over-shadowing light, from which a stream of lights pours down into the phenomenal man; this can be seen attaching itself in two major localities to the dense inner core of the physical man. These two points of attachment are to be found in the head and in the heart. There can also be seen, dimly at first but with increasing brightness, seven other pale disks of light which are the early evidence of the seven centers. [37]

JC: Here we are given an exact descriptive picture of the human electrical unit as viewed on the inner planes outside of space time.   The origins of this 20th century scientific theory began in the 19th century with fiction writers. Edgar Allan Poe stated in his essay on cosmology titled Eureka (1848) that "space and duration are one." This is the first known instance of suggesting space and time to be different perceptions of one thing. Wikipedia.

JC: Time = period of cyclic outgoing and return in any given sequence of evolution.   The vitality aspect is shared by man with the animals and with all created forms, and his capacity to move freely in a three dimensional world is the outstanding achievement of that aspect. TWM 285.

* These centers, which constitute the quality aspects and the consciousness aspects, and whose function it is to color the appearance or outer expression of man and use it as a response apparatus, are (during the evolutionary process) subject to three types of unfoldment. * That unfoldment which takes place as a physical plane child grows from an infant to a man. By the time he is twenty-one, the centers should normally have reached the same quality of expression as they had attained when he passed out of life in a previous incarnation. The man then takes up life where he had previously left it off. * The awakening of the centers through life experience. Occasionally only one center may be dealt with in any one life; sometimes several are brought into greater functioning consciousness. * There is, finally, the awakening of these centers through the process of initiation. This of course only happens when the man is consciously upon the Path.

JC: It takes twenty one years to take up where man left off in a previous incarnation.  3x7=21. During the evolutionary process the centres are subject to three types of unfoldment, or 7 centres x 3 unfoldments symbolically speaking.   * The centers determine the man's point of evolution as far as his phenomenal expression is concerned; they work directly upon the physical body through the [38] medium of the endocrine system. This point should be borne in mind, for the future occult healer will approach his patient with this knowledge. He will then work through those centers and glands which govern the particular area of the body wherein the disease or discomfort is located. The time, however, for this has not yet come, for man's ignorance is great. Over-stimulation of the centers, and consequently of the glands, could easily be brought about, and the diseased condition might be stimulated also and increased, instead of dissipated or healed. EH 38.

JC: A particular area of disease indicates the centres and glands with which the trained esoteric healer should work. However DK gives a stern warning that mans ignorance is great and the time is not yet. We can see the great caution and self discipline needed to take on board the words of the Master. How many aspirants and disciples head this? Increasing of the diseased condition by over stimulation is dangerous and against white lodge indications. The increasing of disease would be analogous to the ignorance of a dark brother who might work through ‘reduction and resolvent’ of the atomic mass/substance of the form.   There are first of all the nadis and the seven centers of force; then the nervous system in its three divisions: cerebro-spinal, sympathetic, and peripheral; and then there is the endocrine system, which might be regarded as the densest aspect or externalization of the other two. TWM 496.

The endocrine system and the seven major glands, in particular, are the effectual externalizations of the seven major centers. In this stage, the aspirant is working all around the centers and is dealing with their environing matter and with the living substance which completely surrounds them. TWM 588.   Function of the Endocrine System

The typical endocrine organ is a ductless gland that secretes chemical mediators directly into local blood vessels which circulate within the body via the bloodstream. These hormones travel to distant organs to regulate the target organ's function. This is classical endocrine signalling. Other signalling can target the same cell (known as Autocrine signalling) or nearby cells (known as Paracrine signalling). Hormones are also instrumental in regulating mood, growth and development, tissue function, and metabolism, as well as sending messages and acting on them. A number of glands which signal each other in sequence is usually refered to as an axis, for example the Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. Upstream elements of the axis (the Hypothalamus in the HPA) produce releasing hormones or sometimes tropic hormones, which signal to downstream glands on the axis which, in turn, release their own hormones. Downstream hormones often down-regulate the action of the upstream glands. This is known as feedback inhibition. Typical endocrine glands are the pituitary, thyroid, and adrenal glands. Features of endocrine glands are typically their ductless nature, their vacularity and usually the presence of intracellular vacuoles or granules storing their hormones. In contrast exocrine glands such as salivary glands, sweat glands and glands within the gastrointestinal tract tend to be much less vascular and have ducts or a hollow lumen. wikipedia.

JC: Here for our correlation are some terms on”psychic energy” or the electrical energy pertaining to man.    In the average person, the etheric vehicle is the transmitter of psychic energy, galvanizing and coordinating the dense physical body and permitting, therefore, astral and mental control of the personality.   When the man is upon the Path of Discipleship and, therefore, upon the reversed wheel, leading to initiation, the etheric body becomes the transmitter of soul energy and not of personality forceEA 352.   It remains now to point out the close connection between the unfoldment of the petals in the egoic lotuses and the etheric centers in man. It is through the centers that psychic energy flows. TCF 587.   These astral centers in their turn are the transmitters of still higher energy, and thus the statement is technically true, that the etheric centers are the source of man's psychic energy, and are therefore affected by the unfoldment of the petals. Every petal is in its turn a type of force center, and the energy emanating from it affects the etheric centers, and produces every type of psychic energy of the true kind. TCF 858.

* The second stage is that in which the energy of the lower six centers: * The throat, * The heart, * The solar plexus, * The spleen, * The organs of generation,

* The base of the spine,   are - in due order according to a man's ray and subray - transferred into the correspondences within the head center. These seven head centers are the reflection in the microcosm of those "mansions prepared in the Heavens" which receive the sevenfold energy of the monad. These are the chambers prepared by the lower energy which are to be the recipients of "soul or the higher psychic energy." TCF 685.   JC: Here we have a vital reference which indicates the process of transference of higher psychic or heart [healing] energy from the sevenfold energy of the monad through the causal body into the seven head centres and the lower seven fold vital mechanism of the etheric/physical man. The originating source is the monadic source the sevenfold energy of the seven jewels or reflections of the seven solar logi.

Supermundane IV, 819.
An understanding of the importance of the heart must develop in the immediate future. The brain should be studied, and its relationship to all aspects of the heart’s activity. We do not limit the study of the heart to the point of view of psychic energy. Science should use many approaches, and then a broad understanding will be achieved. Indeed, all brain activity, the entire nervous system, and all secretions of the glands will be studied as channels from the one source, the heart.

JC: Helena Roerich gives a descriptive of great interest about psychic energy. Reference is made to this energy as being electrical energy. It is quite clear that this perfectly correlates with man as an electrical unit. The electrical heart energy forms the sympathetic nervous system with the glands and the hormonal chemical electrical fluids or secretions. The glandular system is then formed and nourished with psychic electrical energy. This is a basic for understanding the system of the centres and the nadis as externalisations of the seven major centres and therefore man as a unit of electrical energy. Through purity and spiritual striving does man unfold the vortices of electrical psychic energy, the energy of the seven psychic centers. Protection and immunity to disease may only be acquired through cultivation of this energy. DK has made very clear that “psychic energy is the higher energy of the soul and may legitamatly be called heart energy or “the currents of psychic energy” as Hilarion phrases it.

Letters Of Helena Roerich II, 1937. After expounding the physiology of anger he describes remarkably well the electrical manifestations in the organism, which are its life-givers. During anger and other negative emotions, which not only cause the contraction of the blood vessels but also paralyzes of the individual nerves, these electric currents (psychic energy), which flow through them form the sympathetic nervous system, break, and thus "the electric nourishment" of the glands producing the internal secretions (on whose normal activity depends the life of the organism) ceases, and the latter fail to work as is necessary for our health. In our cellular substance that surrounds the nucleus, there are chromosomes and so-called chondriosomes. These elements are, according to their properties, the receptors of various electric waves, as it were, which come partly from the depths of Cosmic Space and, of course, they vibrate mainly upon our psychic energy. The whole life of the organism, according to Lakhovsky, depends upon the vibrations of these chromosomes and chondriosomes, the receivers of the electric waves. The retardation or cessation of the electric vibrations that go through them signifies disease and death.   A chromosome is a single large macromolecule of DNA, and constitutes a physically organized form of DNA in a cell. It is a very long, continuous piece of DNA (a single DNA molecule), which contains many genes, regulatory elements and other intervening nucleotide sequences. A broader definition of "chromosome" also includes the DNA-bound proteins which serve to package and manage the DNA. The word chromosome comes from the Greek µa (chroma, color) and sµa (soma, body). wikipedia.   Letters Of Helena Roerich I, 1 August 1934. Note that soma is not the ethereal body. Soma is a subtle secretion of the glands which can create a sort of protective net for the centers.   Community, 221. If you will search for the nearest correlate of psychic energy, you will find it to be action.   Community, 257. It is clearly evident that people of developed consciousness are often ill. Headache, ailments of the eyes, teeth, extremities, are referable to the psychic domains. You heard this long ago. Cancer, tuberculosis, diseases of liver and spleen, as well as enlargement of the heart—all these result from an unbalanced state of the psychic centers. Only the application of psychic energy can shield.

PolarisProject Group Study: Esoteric Healing. Study letter 7.   Esoteric Healing - Chapter I - The Psychological Causes of Disease      A. Uncontrolled and Ill-Regulated Emotion

Given these basic facts, it can be seen how wrong emotional attitudes and a general unhealthy condition of the astral body must be potent factors in producing discomfort and disease. This is due to the fact that the vital or etheric bodies of the masses of humanity are governed primarily and swept into activity through the action of the astral body. Agitation in that body, any violent activity under stress of temper, intense worry or prolonged irritation will pour a stream of astral energy into and through the solar plexus center, and will galvanize that center into a condition of intense disturbance. This next affects the stomach, the pancreas, the gall duct and bladder. Few people (and I might well ask who is exempt at this particular time in the world's history) are free from indigestion, from undesirable gastric conditions, or from trouble connected with the gall bladder.

JC: Humanity today suffer very much from the stomach complaints mentioned and it is most obvious that the truths with are mentioned hold very much today. As has been discussed, the masses or general public are very much controlled forcibly by the body of emotions and today perhaps more than at any time we see the capacity to be partial to criticism and irritation is prevalent in society. Needless to say, these bring its physical effects as consequences of this and modern pharmaceutical and drug companies develop and sell in huge quantities all manner of medicines for the consumption of the general public to ease [or often worsen] the varied conditions aroused by over stimulation of the solar plexus.   Average Humanity then are consciously focused in these areas resulting in manifestation of some type of disease. For a moment let us consider the Pancreas which is very prominent in today’s society as the manufacturer of two types of insulin and is known esoterically as the "mobilization of energy for physical and mental purposes”. It is given in “the soul and its mechanism” that there are two types of insulin and I posit that this is understood in medical science today as Insulin and Amylin, with Glucagon being a third and important hormone secretion.

The pancreas is a gland organ in the digestive and endocrine systems of vertebrates. It is both exocrine (secreting pancreatic juice containing digestive enzymes) and endocrine (producing several important hormones, including insulin, glucagon, and somatostatin).   Insulin and Amylin:

Insulin (from Latin insula, "island", as it is produced in the Islets of Langerhans in the pancreas) is an anabolic polypeptide hormone that regulates carbohydrate metabolism. Apart from being the primary agent in carbohydrate homeostasis, it has effects on fat metabolism and it changes the liver's activity in storing or releasing glucose and in processing blood lipids, and in other tissues such as fat and muscle. The amount of insulin in circulation has extremely widespread effects throughout the body.   Amylin, or Islet Amyloid Polypeptide (IAPP), is a 37-residue peptide hormone secreted by pancreatic ß-cells at the same time as insulin (in a roughly 100:1 ratio). Amylin functions as part of the endocrine pancreas and contributes to glycemic control. Although amylin's complete function may not yet be known, it has been shown to slow gastric emptying, promote satiety, inhibit secretion of glucagon during hyperglycemia, and therein reduce the total insulin demand.[1][2] As insulin lowers blood glucose and glucagon raises blood glucose, amylin supports the stability of blood glucose levels in effect by slowing the rate that digested glucose enters the bloodstream. wikipedia.

It has two secretions, both insulin, one concerned with the digestive processes and the other known to be vital to the metabolism of sugar. Without sufficient sugar for the cells, no muscle work or nerve work - essentials in the struggle for existence - are possible." - Berman, Louis, M.D., The Glands Regulating Personality, p. 93. SM 47.   The tendency to criticism, to violent dislikes, and to hatreds based on criticism or a superiority complex, produces much of the acidity from which the majority of people suffer. I would like to add in passing that I am here generalizing. So many people are prone to an inferiority complex [39] in relation to themselves, but to a superiority complex where their relation to other people is concerned! Stomachic physical plane effects are closely tied up with the desire aspect of the physical body, which finds expression in the eating and drinking of that which is desired, leading subsequently to those attacks of biliousness to which so many are prone.

JC: An important point to note is the fact that so often where there is a psychological inferiority complex this manifests as a superiority complex when projected onto others. Very interesting also, is that many physical plane effects or complaints of the stomach are due to the physical plane desire aspect of the physical body. Note DK does not say desire aspect of the astral body. The dense form or lunar lord has a life and appetite of its own and is often demonstrated as the pull or attraction to consumption of food and alcohol. Possibly then, as it is true that there is a constant battle of weight gain and dieting or moderation in consumption of many things, the general public have not only a battle of the emotions and of desire, but also a battle against the physical elemental where often the control of the emotional desire is strong or strengthening but the body is weak. A comparative for this is that insanity can happen within the mental, emotional and also the physical body, “Insanity may exist in all three bodies, the least harmful being that of the physical body”. Hence we can see that the dense form has a potent animation of its own even though it is an automaton in the main. This strongly relates to the physical addiction a well as the astral addiction to drugs and so forth. We could say that the automatic responses of the physical body respond to the initial desire of the emotional and then through habit and addictive tendencies continues to fulfil its own craving and habitual desire.   I offer these above illustrations to demonstrate the effect of the prevalent wrong attitudes to life and people which today distinguish mankind and produce the above mentioned conditions.   The ills which are based on criticism, upon hatred, and upon the capacity to judge each other (usually unkindly) work through from the throat center to the solar plexus. This interrelation existing between the centers is one that has never been properly considered. The centers in the etheric body pass varying kinds of energies amongst themselves, and a great deal of the energy transmitted from one center to another is undesirable, flowing from the centers below the diaphragm to those above.

JC: A great deal of the energy amongst the centres being transmitted to and fro is undesirable and therefore productive of some form of un-ease or evident disease. Specifically mentioned are the ills produced from criticism, hatred and un-kind judgement and dislikes of others. These easily work out from the ajna centre downwards to the solar plexus and hence materialise in the region of the stomach to produce the well known and considered complaints of this region to which humanity is plagued. This is a consequence of wrong attitude to life and people. Also mentioned is the fact that much of that undesirable energy flowing from the lower centres via the diaphragm to those higher centres produces a general picture of a chaotic interchange of energies.

The physical body (etheric and dense) can be pictured as a house with two telephonic installations - one bringing in energies from without the house and the other being in the nature of a house telephone from room to room. The analogy is far more accurate than appears to the casual thinker. In every modern house, light and water and gas and telephonic interchange are brought.   * Light, the symbol of the soul; * water, the symbol of the emotions; * telephonic interchange, the symbol of mind with its inter-communication of knowledges; * and gas, the symbol of the etheric nature.   It is interesting and saddening to note that that which at present goes out of the average house is the refuse that is undesirable - this is the correspondence to that which is [40] selfish and sad and the demand for the satisfaction of personal needs and desires.

JC: We have a brilliant illustration here given by DK. Both the etheric and the dense physical may legitimately be pictured as a house with communications and services from room to room. Light is the symbol of the soul and today we have much increased light symbolical of greater soul inflow of humanity the eventual planetary light bearer. This cannot be denied. Water is the symbol of the emotional nature of humanity and today we value perhaps selfishly water as a commodity as well as a life giving necessity. The transiting into the Age of Aquarius brings this element increasingly to our attention. The battle of the opposites is fought on the astral plane and the stormy nature of the planets watery nature is highly prevalent today. Man’s increasing soul nature produces a stormy astral/emotional nature and man makes his own climate which I hypothesis is an aspect of his/her battle of the opposites and discrimination between selfishness and selflessness with all the varying degrees in between.   It can be seen, therefore, why I have so emphatically impressed the need of harmlessness upon all of you, for it is the scientific method, par excellence and esoterically speaking, of cleaning house and of purifying the centers. Its practice clears the clogged channels and permits the entrance of the higher energies.

JC: Harmlessness is a scientific method of house cleaning and of clearing the centres of those many and varying energies which interchange and circulate within the etheric mechanism. Harmlessness cleanses the harmfulness or that which is indicated as undesirable. Telephonic interchange, what better service could DK of given as representative of the minds “inter-communication of knowledges” which currently today has expanded somewhat with a greater network of telephone communication including mobile and text messaging. We have also the internet as predicted by DK. The access to knowledge and communication is incalculable today compared to time of writing and we must still apply it to a symbolical representation of the mental nature, from school access and level to communication and study of the ageless wisdom, the whole spectrum of mental activity and function is apparent. The spread on the net also of undesirable use and satisfaction of baser levels is also obvious as a consequence of the lower selfish satisfactions of humanity. This may be representative of the refuse DK describes as the selfish use of energy for materialistic satisfaction and also of the energies working up from the lower sacral levels to the solar plexus. He states…

“It is interesting and saddening to note that that which at present goes out of the average house is the refuse that is undesirable - this is the correspondence to that which is [40] selfish and sad and the demand for the satisfaction of personal needs and desires”. Humanity is today rapidly coming to terms with this stupendous statement of the Master though they may know it not. The refuse produced by human beings is today at an unprecedented and alarming level compared to fifty or a hundred years ago even though greater or lesser proportions are recycled and reused. DK explicitly states that that which goes out of the house as refuse is undesirable and indicative of demand for “satisfaction of personal needs and desires” and that it is selfish and sad. No doubt there will always be a small proportion of waste from a household though it is indicative that the proportionate levels of waste even then was unnecessary or reflective of how humanity should be living. This illustrates a great deal. Today humanity is at a crisis point, this is a good sign and there is hope for right decision. Man and woman currently consumes energy in vast quantities and this largely is achieved by the mining and production of coal, oil, gas and their allied products which are carbon based fossil fuels. There was nothing wrong with the use and burning of carbon based fuels as this brought about the steam age which produced initiation or transmutation of the water elemental. Mining of coal has brought this star of carbon and humanity to the point of identity of mass self-consciousness with the aid of coal as Hilarion and DK inform us.

Today however, we are at a zenith point, which is determining whether we, humanity, shall use energy solely for selfish purposes and feed the desire of the separated self thus polluting the atmosphere to a greater extent than had been foreseen, or whether we shall find a way to use energy more efficiently and cleanly as in some form of nuclear power on a global scale. Very clearly, as may be seen and heard discussed today throughout the news media and documentary programmes and science in general, we are presented with evidence to indicate that we are at such a zenith point. All this consideration by science and politics is part of the process ongoing by mankind in the making sacred of this planet, which we are told it is already so, on the inner planetary planes, though humanity at this time is at a critical point in choosing the left hand path or the right. The way of carbon [evil] occultly understood or the way of non-carbonic power i.e. nuclear and alternative energy [Good] or the product of human thought when "energy is better understood" and "man will eventually come to the realisation" and so "concentrate his attention" as man today certainly has his concentration and attention focused today on the wise and environmentally sustainable use of a new energy.

Science also recognises this esoteric fire cycle as one of 'Global Warming' and soundly warns humanity of the impending danger of excessive use and dependence on "fossil fuels" or Carbon. Thus modern science resonates and proclaims the ageless wisdom, of the planetary shift from "none sacred" "carbonic" "evil" to one of  "Sacred" "Nuclear, or clean energy" "good or holy" this science actually demonstrates in its way and therefore lays the proposition soundly and firmly at humanities feet, as we bow before the feet of Sanat Kumara under his Will. This has to do with the esoteric healing of the planet, for the refuse produced by man now is clearly substantiated by DK and demonstrated as a “carbon footprint” [refuse] or the mark man is making on the planet through his over selfish consumption and fixation on material want, this DK has already clearly dealt with as “saddening to note”.  The amount of individual waste is small compared to all waste produced by society, personal waste production is small compared to overall waste volumes of industry in general for example. Humanity should bear in mind that untold hundreds of thousands have died mining coal and gas, in consideration of all allied petroleum and power generation industries during the industrial revolution, with accidents, deaths and disease being common place in extremely high numbers. The great de forestation taking place and heavy urbanisation should also be taken into account. This should not be forgotten.

Waste management for non-hazardous residential and institutional waste in metropolitan areas is usually the responsibility of local government authorities, while management for non-hazardous commercial and industrial waste is usually the responsibility of the generator. Disposed waste is normally compacted to increase its density and stabilise the new landform, and covered to prevent attracting vermin (such as mice or rats) and reduce the amount of wind-blown litter. Many landfills also have a landfill gas extraction system installed after closure to extract the landfill gas generated by the decomposing waste materials. Gas is pumped out of the landfill using perforated pipes and flared off or burnt in a gas engine to generate electricity. Even flaring the gas is a better environmental outcome than allowing it to escape to the atmosphere, as this consumes the methane, which is a far more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. Many local authorities, especially in urban areas, have found it difficult to establish new landfills due to opposition from owners of adjacent land. Few people want a landfill in their local neighborhood. As a result, solid waste disposal in these areas has become more expensive as material must be transported further away for disposal (or managed by other methods). This fact, as well as growing concern about the impacts of excessive materials consumption, has given rise to efforts to minimise the amount of waste sent to landfill in many areas. Wikipedia.

Such are the wonders of modern physical science; but at what cost of apparatus, and carbonic acid and coal gas. IU2 606.

The emotional causes of disease and the mental attitudes which produce physical discomfort are at this particular time those which are the most prevalent. When they are persisted in over a long period of time, and are carried over from life to life, they cause the more violent aspects of the conditions referred to above, and from them serious and destructive diseases can emerge, necessitating, for instance, the removal of the gall bladder or those operations incident to the appearance of chronic gastric ulcers. Other diseases grow from a constant pandering to the desire nature, though sexual diseases come under another category. It can be seen from the above how desirable it is that the true healer should combine in himself, not only a measure of esoteric knowledge, but - until he is an initiate - something of psychology, something of the work of a magnetic healer, and also be a trained medical man or surgeon.

JC: Unless one is an initiated and automatic healer we can see that the uninitiated healer has a lot to take into consideration. How many achieve the requirements laid out by DK? Indeed much of the healing being done or attempted is “worse than useless”! This is quite a hard and accurate conclusion.

Much of the healing now done is worse than useless, because the three above mentioned conditions are lacking. Most doctors, especially those who are called general practitioners, are good psychologists and they have also a sound knowledge of symptoms and of anatomy and of curative measures which are usually lacking in the average metaphysical healer. But they are entirely ignorant of one great field of knowledge - that concerning the energies which meet and war within the human frame and of the [41] potencies which can be set in motion if certain esoteric truths are admitted in place. Until they work with the etheric body and study the science of the centers, they can make little further progress. The esoteric healer knows much about the inner forces and energies and has some understanding of the basic causes of the exoteric diseases, but his ignorance of man's mechanism is deplorable, and he fails to realize two things:

JC: Here we have the reference that the average GP is a “good psychologist” this is usually the case as they are genuinely and naturally interested in their patients, are intelligent and caring in an outgoing sense with genuine goodwill and compassion for others who they see as people they can help. They suffer with, rather than hold themselves aloof from others. However they are restricted by their lack of knowledge of the true constitution of man and are indicated as able to make little further progress although DK seems quietly pleased about their capabilities. On the other hand he uses the statement regarding the esoteric healer “his ignorance of man's mechanism is deplorable” this seems to be a sharp assessment and probably well warranted.

* First, that disease is sometimes the working out into manifestation of undesirable subjective conditions. These, when externalized and brought to the surface of the human body, can then be known, dealt with and eliminated. It is well to remember also that sometimes this working out and elimination may well bring about the death of that particular body. But the soul goes on. One short life counts for very little in the long cycle of the soul, and it is counted well worthwhile if a period of ill health (even if it eventuates in death) brings about the clearing away of wrong emotional and mental conditions.

JC: It seems to be pointed out that many esoteric healers fail to take into account that the working outwards of disease is desirable as apposed to the turning it back on itself and directing it into the inner man/mechanism. When externalised it can be treated and eliminated. Death is often the result of this externalization and may bring about death of that incarnating unit. It is apparent that this is no great loss and even “well worthwhile” due to elimination of wrong emotional and mental conditions and attitudes that were developed, which obviously cause the disease in the original place. Modern medicine and nursing would be appalled by this only because it has generally no conception of the soul as an incarnating entity manifesting in a long series of lives and being presented with renewed opportunity and conditions as the diseased body is cast off. We can see then, that there needs to be a meeting of minds between the esoteric healer with knowledge of the soul and the etheric body, and modern general practice, surgery, nursing and anatomical understanding.

* Second, disease is sometimes incident upon and part of the process of the withdrawal of the soul from its habitation. This we call death, and it can come quickly and unexpectedly when the soul withdraws with suddenness from its body. Or death can spread itself over a long period of time, and the soul may take several months or years for its slow and gradual emergence from the body, with the body dying by inches all the time.

JC: Modern nursing care generally speaking seems to have no conception of the process of withdrawal of the soul from its lower vehicles and that this may be sudden or protracted over years although it deals with effects in a splendid manner indeed. There is much time and resources given to cure for everything when this is not always possible or desirable, often leaving those around with a sense of frustration and futile hope. The average esoteric healer has no conception of the purpose of the soul of the patient and may well attempt cure when it is not possible or intended, this is a great mistake and indicates the lack of wisdom of the chance healer. The ignorance of the constitution of man and the fact of the soul is great indeed. Fortunately palliative and some ameliorative care is all that may reasonably be provided for the patient in this case. The understanding of why disease has appeared is enormous in its scope and we are reminded of the great lack of knowledge and basic understanding of healers in this matter not enabling them to deal with wisdom in this matter.   Esoteric Healing - Chapter I - The Psychological Causes of Disease

There is not sufficient knowledge yet among healers to enable them to deal with wisdom in these matters. We might therefore conclude that: [42]

1.  Disease is a purificatory process, carried out in order to produce a purer expression, life aroma, influence and soul usefulness. When this is the case, a cure is possible.

2.  Disease can be a gradual and slow process of dying and of thus releasing the soul. A cure then will not be possible, though paliative and ameliorative measures are needed and should most certainly be used. The length of the life can be prolonged, but a permanent and final cure is out of the question. This the average mental healer fails to realize. They make a horror out of death, whereas death is a beneficent friend.

3.  Disease can be the sudden and final call to the body to relinquish the soul and set it free for other service.

JC: Only when disease has manifested to in effect purify and eliminate wrong inner conditions for the express purpose of rendering a purer expression, life aroma and soul usefulness can cure be possible. This is an enormous statement indicating the great wisdom of the soul in question. Who can know of this other than the Soul, or a Master? Cure is out of the question, which in itself calls into question the search for final cures for everything, and for everyone in today’s society where horror of death is great and prolonging of life at almost all costs is apparent. However today as in the 1950’s everything possible should be done from the standpoint of medical science and allied branches as DK points out. Palliative and ameliorative treatment is again, most reasonable though sometimes we see patients today choosing to refuse drastic treatments other than enough to allow for reasonable comfort and so allowing the natural process to take its course. This may be the result of inner reconciliation and soul understanding.   In all these cases everything possible should be done from the standpoint of modern medical and surgical science and the allied sciences of which there are today so many. Much too can be done from the angle of mental and spiritual healing, aided by the science of psychology. Some day there must come cooperation in these various fields and a synthesizing of their efforts.

…In the case of the highly evolved man, of the initiate or the Master, the astral body is steadily oriented towards the soul. In the mystic, the aspirant and the disciple, the process of thus definitely changing the direction of the forces is going on and producing, therefore, a temporary chaos. 4.  The astral body of man, being the latest to develop (the physical and the etheric being the first two in order of time) is still the most alive and potent. It reached its acme of development in late Atlantean days and its potency is still great, constituting the mass potency, the mass emphasis, and the mass polarization. This is also augmented by energies coming from the animal kingdom, which is entirely astral in its point of attainment.

JC:  The astral body reached its zenith of development in Atlantean times although today it is still the prime motivating factor in man’s state of sensory perception. Average man receives and communicates so much information through this vehicle that he is primarily a sensual and emotional being and therefore very conscious on the astral plane which is the plane of illusion and glamour. It is the vibrational frequency of mass emphasis and closely relates to the animal brain, the herd instinct and therefore the animal kingdom en mass via devotion and attachment. The 6th ray is associated with this plane of consciousness and began to pass out of manifestation with increasing rapidity from1625 A.D. however it always governs the idealism and spiritual devotion of the aspirant and the probationary disciple. We should note that this ray is still prevalent today with the waning Piscean age and obviously effects with potency the disciple and the astral forces with which the disciple battles. We have an un-healthy astral body surrounding our planet, a thick fog of evil desire created by humanity and by us all over the aeons which adds to the pollution of the astral atmosphere, manifesting in the outer appearance and atmosphere of the world in which we live and breath today.

I would remind you here that the use of the word "body" is most misleading and unfortunate. It produces in the consciousness the idea of a defined form and a specific shape. The astral body is an aggregate of forces, working through into the consciousness in the form of desires, impulses, longings, wishes, determinations, incentives, and projections, thus laying the basis for much of the truth of the teachings of modern psychology. Psychologists have discovered (or rather uncovered) the nature of some of these forces, and their terminology in this connection is frequently more truly occult and accurate than is that of [44] the orthodox esotericist and theosophist. EH 44.

JC: DK makes the observation that the term “body” relating to the astral consciousness is unfortunate and misleading. Perhaps an accumulation of astral atoms relating to a varying though specific spectrum of vibration is more appropriate. All is energy or force and it is within these astral units of matter that are accumulated much of the astral thought forms, psychosis and so called sub conscious suppressions and distortions that are held ready to erupt or perhaps lay dormant as the psych and karma determines. Modern psychology recognises and works very much with the body of the emotions as a pre determining factor in the motivation and condition of the patient and was pioneered very much by C. Jung who related religion/spirituality, dreams, mythology, psychology and sex as major conditioning factors forming the “collective unconscious”. This will relate well with the emotional condition being of the mass or collective potency and polarisation. In one sense, the collective astral unconscious of humanity is the planetary dweller on the threshold. Jung was a pioneer regarding this.

Carl Gustav Jung (July 26, 1875, Kesswil – June 6, 1961, Küsnacht) was a Swiss psychiatrist, influential thinker, and founder of analytical psychology.

Jung's unique and broadly influential approach to psychology has emphasized understanding the psyche through exploring the worlds of dreams, art, mythology, world religion and philosophy. Although he was a theoretical psychologist and practicing clinician for most of his life, much of his life's work was spent exploring other realms, including Eastern and Western philosophy, alchemy, astrology, sociology, as well as literature and the arts. His most notable contributions include his concept of the psychological archetype, the collective unconscious, and his theory of synchronicity. Jung emphasized the importance of balance and harmony. He cautioned that modern humans rely too heavily on science and logic and would benefit from integrating spirituality and appreciation of the unconscious realm. It is for this reason that Jungian ideas are not typically included in curriculum of most major universities' psychology departments.   Collective unconscious is a term of analytical psychology originally coined by Carl Jung. While Freud did not distinguish between an "individual psychology" and a "collective psychology", Jung distinguished the collective unconscious from the personal unconscious particular to each human being.
