Every
nation has to either be with us, or against us. Those who harbor terrorists,
or who finance them, are going to pay a price.
For centuries, New
York has served as the gateway for millions of people from all over
the world in search of the American dream. It only makes sense that
it would now serve as a gateway for the world's greatest athletes.
Heavens, no! It
could get subpoenaed. I can't write anything.
I believe in a zone
of privacy.
I'm not going to
have some reporters pawing through our papers We are the president.
I'm undaunted in
my quest to amuse myself by constantly changing my hair.
If I want to knock
a story off the front page, I just change my hairstyle.
In the aftermath
of September 11, and as the 9/11 Commission report so aptly demonstrates,
it is clear that our intelligence system is not working the way that
it should.
In the Bible it
says they asked Jesus how many times you should forgive, and he said
70 times 7. Well, I want you all to know that I'm keeping a chart.
In too many instances,
the march to globalization has also meant the marginalization of women
and girls. And that must change.
It is one thing
not to know exactly all we should be doing to protect our homeland.
It is something altogether different not to be doing the business we
are expected to do to provide as many resources effectively deployed
as possible to try to ensure that so far as humanly possible we have
done our job.
Let's not leave
an educational vacuum to be filled by religious extremists who go to
families who have no other option and offer meals, housing and some
form of education. If we are going to combat extremism then we must
educate those very same children.
Many of you are
well enough off that the tax cuts may have helped you. We're saying
that for America to get back on track, we're probably going to cut that
short and not give it to you. We're going to take things away from you
on behalf of the common good.
No matter what you
think about the Iraq war, there is one thing we can all agree on for
the next days - we have to salute the courage and bravery of those who
are risking their lives to vote and those brave Iraqi and American soldiers
fighting to protect their right to vote.
One day after laying
a wreath at the tomb of Martin Luther King Jr., President Bush appoints
a federal judge who has built his career around dismantling Dr. King's
legacy.
Over the last decades
we have made some significant progress in fighting AIDS in our country.
But we cannot rest until this progress reaches every corner of the globe
and we are able to ensure that no matter where you live, the scourge
of AIDS ceases to be the terrifying killer that it is today.
Probably my worst
quality is that I get very passionate about what I think is right.
Research shows the
presence of women raises the standards of ethical behavior and lowers
corruption.
The American people
are tired of liars and people who pretend to be something they're not.
The American taxpayer
should not be treated more shabbily than debtors from other nations
and we should be encouraging other nations to help rebuild Iraq's economy.
The challenge is
to practice politics as the art of making what appears to be impossible,
possible.
The challenges of
change are always hard. It is important that we begin to unpack those
challenges that confront this nation and realize that we each have a
role that requires us to change and become more responsible for shaping
our own future.
What we have to
do... is to find a way to celebrate our diversity and debate our differences
without fracturing our communities.
You show people
what you're willing to fight for when you fight your friends.
Throughout the 1980’s,
we did hear too much about individual gain and the ethos of selfishness
and greed. We did not hear enough about how to be a good member of a
community, to define the common good and to repair the social contract.
And we also found that while prosperity does not trickle down from the
most powerful to the rest of us, all too often indifference and even
intolerance do.
I am surprised
at the way people seem to perceive me, and sometimes I read stories
and hear things about me and I go “ugh.” I wouldn’t
like her either. It’s so unlike what I think I am or what my friends
think I am.
You never know in retrospect whether you did or didn’t do exactly
the right thing, stay-at-home mothers, gone-away mothers, all of us
worry whether we should have done something differently than we did.
Children’s
lives are not shaped solely by their families or immediate surroundings
at large. That is why we must avoid the false dichotomy that says only
government or only family is responsible. . . . Personal values and
national policies must both play a role.
Don't confuse having
a career with having a life.
All of us have
to recognize that we owe our children more than we have been giving
them.
“In many
parts of the world, women and girls are especially vulnerable to HIV/AIDS
because they lack control over most aspects of their life. Cultural
expectations and gender roles expose women and girls to violence, sexual
exploitation and far greater risk for infection
“There is
a great deal of political pressure to only talk about abstinence, and
to deny support for condoms and education on using them. This policy
will lead to the unnecessary deaths of many people.
We must stop thinking
of the individual and start thinking about what is best for society
Marriage has got
historic, religious and moral content that goes back to the beginning
of time, and I think a marriage is as a marriage always has been, between
a man and a woman.
I did what people
do when they do the wrong thing.
I am worried that
it seems inconsistent and unsustainable for the president to be asking
for large tax cuts before we know what our continuing obligations are.
I would like to see us take a deep breath, deal with Iraq....I don't
believe that we really fully appreciate the cost that we may be embarking
upon.
For too long, our
close ties with the Arab world have been compromised by negative stereotyping
on both sides. It is my hope that this trip will help strengthen the
bonds of friendship among our nations.
I think we sort
of have lost track of the fact this is a government that has to be accountable
to the people of our country.
This is not a game.
This has to be a serious inquiry that people have confidence in that
will help us understand what did go wrong. The sooner we know that,
the better.
If we want to keep
the rest of the economy growing, we have to make information technology
more accessible.
Unlike them, I have
apologized to the American people for what I did wrong, and most Americans
think I paid a pretty high price, ... They never apologized to the country
for impeachment. They never apologized for all the things they've done.
In my dreams I meet
six New Yorkers I screwed over. Whether I did it legally or not is irrelevant
We're going to have
to look closely at how we better address what happened on 9-11 and to
be better prepared in the event, heaven forbid, something like this
were to occur again.
A year ago everyone
had written Democrats off. The media had taken for granted the re-election
of George Bush. Isn't it fun to prove them wrong?
First things first.
Meet the challenge of the aging of America, save Social Security, save
Medicare ... do the things that we have to do; figure out what it costs
and then give the rest of it back to the American people, ... This is
a remarkable moment in history. We can't take advantage of it if we
don't work (with) the Republicans. They have to work with us.
